Response-guided ABVD chemotherapy plus involved-field radiation therapy for intermediate-stage Hodgkin lymphoma in the pre-positron emission tomograp…

2009

Abstract Purpose In the pre—positron emission tomography era, the Gruppo Italiano Studio Linfomi (GISL) investigated the feasibility and efficacy of a treatment based on a response-tailored number of doxorubicin/bleomycin/vinblastine/dacarbazine (ABVD) courses in 218 intermediate-stage Hodgkin lymphoma patients. Patients and Methods Patients with stage I/II showing at least one adverse prognostic factor and stage IIIA without adverse prognostic factors were recruited. Treatment included a first step of 3 ABVD courses, followed by an early-restaging. Patients in CR/CRu received 1 additional ABVD cycle, patients in PR received 3 more ABVD, and nonresponder patients went off study. Involved-fi…

Heterogeneity of Morquio disease.

1986

Further clinical heterogeneity of Morquio disease, mucopolysaccharidosis IV (MPS IV), is delineated by the observation of a 30-year-old man with unusually mild clinical manifestations. He is 156 cm tall, has comparatively mild skeletal abnormalities and fine corneal deposits. Keratosulfaturia is absent. N-Acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate (GalNAc-6-S) sulfatase (E.C. 3.1.6.-) was markedly reduced in his fibroblasts. The residual enzyme activity exhibited a pH profile comparable to that of patients with the "classical" form of the disorder. From our observation and a review of the literature it is concluded that Morquio disease can be divided in several subgroups: besides the severe ("classical"…

Risk factors for neuroblastoma at different stages of disease. Results from a population-based case-control study in Germany

2001

Neuroblastoma is one of the childhood cancers included in two recent population-based case-control studies in West Germany. Altogether, 183 children under the age of 8 with neuroblastoma diagnosed in 1988-1994 and 1785 control children sampled from population registration files participated. Information on potential risk factors was obtained from the children's parents by a self-administered questionnaire and subsequent telephone interview. We observed positive associations with the use of oral contraceptives or other sex hormones during pregnancy (particularly with male offspring), a shorter gestational duration, lower birth weight, and maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy. While …

Effect of sperm glutathione peroxidases 1 and 4 on embryo asymmetry and blastocyst quality in oocyte donation cycles

2005

Objective To prospectively determine the impact of concrete components of the sperm oxidative glutathione stress system in terms of enzymatic activity and mitochondrial RNA (mRNA) expression on embryo quality and reproductive outcome. Human spermatozoa use the glutathione system to inactivate reactive oxygen metabolites, and there is a close correlation between some components of the glutathione system and male fertility. However, very few data are published regarding this system in sperm cells and its effect on fertilization ability and embryo development in human beings. Design An oocyte-donation model, used to homogenize the female factor. Setting University-affiliated private IVF settin…

Prospective randomized trial to evaluate two delayed granulocyte colony stimulating factor administration schedules after high-dose cytarabine therap…

2002

In acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), treatment with granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) during remission induction shortens granulocytopenia and may decrease morbidity due to infections. However, the optimal timing of G-CSF administration after chemotherapy is not known. In a prospective randomized multi-center study, adult ALL patients were treated with high-dose ARA-C [HDAC, 3 g/m(2) bid (1 g/m(2) bid for T-ALL) days 1-4] and mitoxantrone (MI 10 mg/m(2) days 3-5). They were randomized to receive recombinant human G-CSF (Lenograstim) 263 micro g/day SC starting either from day 12 (Group 1) or day 17 (Group 2). Fifty-five patients (41 male, 14 female) with a median age of 34 yea…

Odontogenic tumors: A study of 120 cases in an Indian teaching hospital

2010

Objective: Studies on odontogenic tumors published from many parts of the world show a distinct geographic variation; however, there is little information available in the English-language literature on the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in India. This retrospective study was designed to determine the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in an Indian population and compare them with various reports from other parts of the world. Study design: The histopathology records of the Department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology of Government Dental College and Hospital, Mumbai were retrieved retrospectively within the period of January 2001 to July 2010. A total of 120 lesions classi…

Retrospective study of 289 odontogenic tumors in a Brazilian population

2016

Background: Odontogenic tumors (OTs) are considered important among oral lesions because of their clinicopathological heterogeneity, and variable biological behavior. This paper aims to determine the frequency and distribution of OTs, over a period of 10 years, at a public university in Northeastern Brazil and compare this data with previous reports. Material and Methods: We reviewed all cases of OTs from oral pathology laboratory of University of Pernambuco (UPE), from 2004 to 2014. Diagnoses were re-evaluated and the tumors were classified according to the latest (2005) World Health Organization Classification of Tumors. In addition, we searched in the English-language literature retrospe…

Ameloblastomas: clinicopathological features from 70 cases diagnosed in a single Oral Pathology service in an 8-year period

2014

Ameloblastomas are odontogenic tumors that can present some distinct clinicopathological profiles when comparing different populations and studies. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to analyze the clinicopathological features from a series of ameloblastomas diagnosed in a single Oral Pathology service in Brazil in an 8-year period. Study Design: The files were revised and all cases diagnosed as ameloblastomas in the period were retrieved. All hematoxylin and eosin stained histological slides were reviewed and all clinical and radiological information were obtained through a review of the laboratory forms. Data were descriptively analyzed and a comparison was performed with the di…

Low-density lipoproteins generated during an oral fat load in mild hypertriglyceridemic and healthy subjects are smaller, denser, and have an increas…

2005

Triglyceride-rich lipoproteins generated during the postprandial phase are atherogenic. Large very low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) or chylomicrons (CMs) are not as atherogenic as their remnants (Rem). Small and dense LDLs are associated with cardiovascular disease. Low-density lipoprotein size is partly under genetic control and is considered as a relatively stable LDL feature. In this article, we present data on retinyl palmitate kinetics correlated with the modification of LDL features in terms of size, density, and in vitro receptor binding affinity after an oral fat load. Six nondiabetic, hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) patients and 6 healthy controls were examined. Low-density lipoprotein s…

Evaluation of surgical decision making and resulting outcome in patients with highly eloquent glioblastoma: Results of a multicenter assessment.

2017

Treatment of glioblastoma(GB) patients amenable only for a subtotal resection(STR) is controversial. Since outcome of patients is affected by surgical management, our aim was to assess surgical decision making and resulting outcome in patients with highly eloquent GBs.We retrospectively assessed GB patients with intended sub-total resection (STR) or stereotactic biopsy (STX) of 3 neurooncological centers operated between 2008 and 2013. A volumetric assessment of overall extent of resection(oEoR), presence of complications, new permanent neurological deficits(nPNDs) was performed. A central reviewer reassessed all cases blinded and gave recommendation on surgical management and on a potentia…
