Hereditary combined deficiency of the vitamin K-dependent clotting factors
2010
Abstract Hereditary combined vitamin K-dependent clotting factors deficiency (VKCFD) is a rare congenital bleeding disorder resulting from variably decreased levels of coagulation factors II, VII, IX and X as well as natural anticoagulants protein C, protein S and protein Z. The spectrum of bleeding symptoms ranges from mild to severe with onset in the neonatal period in severe cases. The bleeding symptoms are often life-threatening, occur both spontaneously and in a surgical setting, and usually involve the skin and mucosae. A range of non-haemostatic symptoms are often present, including developmental and skeletal anomalies. VKCFD is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in …
Non-surgical periodontal treatment with a new ultrasonic device (Vectortm-ultrasonic system) or hand instruments. A prospective, controlled clinical …
2004
Objectives: The aim of this prospective, randomized, controlled clinical study was to compare the effectiveness of a newly developed ultrasonic device to that of scaling and root planing for non-surgical periodontal treatment. Material and Methods: Thirty-eight patients with moderate to advanced chronic periodontal disease were treated according to an “one-stage procedure” with either a newly developed ultrasonic device (VUS) (Vector™-ultrasonic system) or scaling and root planing (SRP) using hand instruments. Clinical assessments by plaque index (PlI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were made …
Impact of monopolar and bipolar endometrial resection on abnormal uterine bleeding
2013
Study Objective. To compare two procedures for endometrial resection: resectoscopy with monopolar knife versus resectoscopy with bipolar knife. Patients and methods. 76 perimenopausal patients affected by DUB (Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding), no longer wishing to remain pregnant and having failed to respond to pharmacological treatment, underwent endometrial ablation with monopolar loop (group A: 38 women) or bipolar loop (group B: 38 women). Operative parameters, complication rate, menstrual outcome were considered. Results. Operative time was no different between groups. The amount of distention fluid adsorbed was significantly higher in group A than in group B, and late cumulative compli…
Management of anemia: blood loss in orthopaedic surgery
2010
Major ortopaedic surgery and high energy trauma are often responsible of acute bleeding. Long bones and pelvis fractures are correlated with increased blood loss. The final consequence of a major bleeding is hypovolemic shock. The reduced oxygen tension of tissue could be responsible of heart attack, arrythmia, ictus, multi organ deficiency. For these reasons, it is important to immediately recognize and correct all potential bleeding in order to avoid complications. In orthopaedics the elective treatments in the managenment of hypovolemia are different. Blood banks and allogenic blood components have had an important impact on operative treatment and health care worldwide. erythropoietin h…
Left Atrial Remodeling and Brain Natriuretic Peptide Levels Variation after Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion
2021
Background: Few data are available about brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) variation and left atrial remodeling after the left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) technique. Methods: Prospective study included all consecutive patients successfully implanted with an LAAO device. Contrast-enhanced cardiac computed tomography (CT) was performed before and 6 weeks after the procedure with reverse left atrial remodeling defined by an increase in LA volume >
ChemInform Abstract: Cyclooxygenase Inhibitors - Current Status and Future Prospects
2010
Prostaglandins are formed from arachidonic acid by the action of cyclooxygenase and subsequent downstream synthetases. Two closely related forms of the cyclooxygenase have been identified which are now known as COX-1 and COX-2. Both isoenzymes transform arachidonic acid to prostaglandins, but differ in their distribution and their physiological roles. Meanwhile, the responsible genes and their regulation have been clarified. COX-1, the pre-dominantly constitutive form of the enzyme, is expressed throughout the body and performs a number of homeostatic functions such as maintaining normal gastric mucosa and influencing renal blood flow and platelet aggregation. In contrast, the inducible for…
Validation of the ISTH/SSC bleeding assessment tool for inherited platelet disorders: A communication from the Platelet Physiology SSC
2020
Background: Careful assessment of bleeding history is the first step in the evaluation of patients with mild/moderate bleeding disorders, and the use of a bleeding assessment tool (BAT) is strongly encouraged. Although a few studies have assessed the utility of the ISTH-BAT in patients with inherited platelet function disorders (IPFD) none of them was sufficiently large to draw conclusions and/or included appropriate control groups. Objectives: The aim of the present study was to test the utility of the ISTH-BAT in a large cohort of patients with a well-defined diagnosis of inherited platelets disorder in comparison with two parallel cohorts, one of patients with type-1 von Willebrand disea…
A perioperative uncontrollable bleeding in an elderly patient with acquired hemophilia A: a case report
2013
Key Clinical Message Acquired hemophilia A should be taken into account in the differential diagnosis of perioperative bleeding in patients without any apparent reason for activated partial thromboplastin time prolongation.
Floor of the mouth hemorrhage subsequent to dental implant placement in the anterior mandible
2019
Abstract Complications in dental implant surgery are possible. Bleeding complications have been described that may be serious, particularly in the floor of the mouth. We present two cases of sublingual hematomas during dental implant osteotomies that impeded but did not close the airway. The clinical courses of these patient’s complications are reviewed. One patient had immediate hematoma formation while the other developed a hematoma overnight, presenting the next day. The treatment rendered was a precautionary in-hospital tracheotomy for the first patient and only compression control for the second. Bleeding complications during dental implant placement in the anterior mandible can be ser…
Influence of Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique on Peri-Implant Tissues; Prospective Randomized Clinical Trial with Three-Year Follow-Up. Pa…
2019
Purpose: The objective of this prospective randomized clinical trial (RCT) was to analyze and compare the clinical behavior of three types of prosthesis supported by single implants in the posterior region after three years of functional loading. Materials and methods: Seventy-five implants were divided into three groups according to the type of prosthetic restoration: screw-retained crown (group GS); cemented crown without finishing line (biologically oriented preparation technique) (group GBOPT); and conventional cemented crown with finishing line (group GCC). After three years in function, clinical parameters (presence of keratinized mucosa, probing depths, bleeding on probing, and radio…
