Al cuore del fantastico. Ibridi da pensare nel Paleolitico

2022

Our narrative abilities go back before Chauvet. Already the ivory figure of the so-called Hohlenstein-Stadel Lion-Man, dated to about 40,000 years ago, must be regarded as the most advanced product of a hundred if not a thousand years of figurative and narrative experimentation. In order to create this hybrid figure, as well the more or less theriomorphic figures which populate caves all over the world, the human mind must have possessed developed narrative skills. All the imaginary animals found in prehistoric art and all the teratologies found in caves, presuppose a narrative, more precisely the story of a metamorphosis. In this contribution I propose an interpretation that investigates t…

Etude de l'influence de l'hydratation des laitiers sur les propriétés de transfert gazeux dans les matériaux cimentaires

2015

Cements with high slag content are currently studied as possible candidate for nuclear waste containment materials. In this context it is important to know their microstructure and the transport properties (permeability and diffusion) of the gases that are formed by the radiolysis of the water present in this material. According to literature, these properties are strongly impacted by the addition of blast furnace slag. The aim of this work is to correlate the hydration processes of slag blended cements with their transport properties. In the first part of this work, the hydration of the slag blended cements, for which only few results have been reported to date, has been studied. Silicon-2…

Volume strain, strain type and flow path in a narrow shear zone

1998

This study explores the state of finite strain and changes in the mean kinematic vorticity number, grain size, whole-rock chemistry and mineralogy across an upper amphibolite-facies shear zone in a metadiorite, northern Malawi, east-central Africa. P–T conditions during shear-zone formation and deformation were approximately 700–750 °C and 5–7 kbar and are slightly less than P–T conditions for the regional peak of metamorphism. The major rock-forming minerals, plagioclase, hornblende, biotite, and quartz, were deformed by crystal-plastic processes accompanied by, except for hornblende, dynamic recrystallization. The modal abundance of all four major rock-forming minerals shows no systematic…

Extending the semiotics of embodied interaction to blended spaces.

2015

In this paper, we develop a new way of understanding interactions in blended spaces. We do this by developing ideas about embodied semiotics and then apply these ideas to the analysis of interaction in mixed-reality blended spaces (where the physical world and digital world are blended deliberately to provide new forms of interaction). We discuss how blended spaces provide a new medium within which people have experiences. The semiotic analysis reveals how blended spaces are constructed across the physical and the digital, highlighting the ontology, topology, volatility, and agency present within them. It shows how people move between the physical and digital spaces through the objects and …

Monte Carlo studies of polymer interdiffusion and spinodal decomposition: A review

1991

Abstract Putting a layer of polymer A on top of a layer of polymer B, the broadening of the interfacial profile is observed in the framework of a lattice model (‘bond fluctuation method’). The interdiffusion constant is studied as a function of chain length, vacancy concentration, and interaction energy between unlike monomers, and a comparison with pertinent theoretical predictions is made. A lattice model where polymers are represented as self-avoiding walks on a simple cubic lattice is used to model ‘spinodal decomposition’, i.e. phase separation by ‘uphill diffusion’ in the unstable part of the phase diagram of a polymer mixture. For chain lengths N ≤ 32, the linearized Cahn-like theory…

Combined SANS and SAXS experiments in polyolefins-hydrogenated oligocyclopentadiene (HOCP) blends

1998

Abstract Lamellar morphology in semicrystyalline polymer blends (iPP/HOCP and HDPE/HOCP) is investigated by means of Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). The investigated blends present a complex phase diagram, as they show a miscibility gap. SAXS scattering curves of blends lying outside the miscibility gap can be analysed in the frame of the psuedo two phase model. In order to describe the complex morphology of blends lying inside the miscibility gap, the SANS technique revealed necessary. In this paper a novel method to describe the morphology of these complex systems by means of SANS is presented.

Monte Carlo simulation of polymers at interfaces

1993

Abstract Polymers at interfaces pose challenging problems to statistical physics because their configurations often differ greatly from the bulk. Computer simulation of coarse-grained models then gives valuable insight and allows stringent tests of various theoretical predictions. Three examples are briefly treated: chain configurations of B-chains in the surface-enriched B-rich layer of an (AB) binary polymer mixture; “frustrated” lamellar ordering in ultra-thin block-copolymer films; and the collapse of polymer brushes in bad solvents.

Integrating Experiences: Palermo Mediterranean Gateway City. Identity and Innovation

2019

Metropolitan transformations of the Palermo as a Mediterranean city, guided by envisioning it as a ‘fluid’ gateway city, have been seen as an example for the planning of other such cities in Italy and Europe. The 2025 strategic vision for Palermo was inspired by three key components: (i) the relevance of Palermo as ‘hub territory’ in European level concerns in territorial and infrastructure development policies; (ii) the urban and regional experience with the concept ‘fluid city’ (envisioning the city as a portal and place of interaction and exchanges, not just in terms of goods and people); and (iii) new metropolitan vision produced by new regional and national legislation on metropolitan …

Effect of block copolymer architecture on the interfacial tension between immiscible polymers

2007

The effect of block copolymer additives on the interfacial tension (σ) is studied for the systems polydimethylsiloxane/polyethyleneoxide (A/B) and polyethylmethylsiloxane/polypropyleneoxide by means of a sessile-drop and a pendant-drop-apparatus. Diblockcopolymers (A-block-B), triblockcopolymers (A-block-B-block-A) and “tooth-brush” like copolymers (A backbone, B brushes) served as additives.
