Spontaneous Cortical Spreading Depression and Intracranial Pressure Following Acute Subdural Hematoma in a Rat

2012

Acute subdural hemorrhage (ASDH) is a frequent and devastating consequence of traumatic brain injury. Tissue damage develops rapidly and makes treatment even more difficult. Management of increased intracranial pressure (ICP) due to extravasated blood volume and brain swelling is often insufficient to control all adverse effects of ASDH. In addition to sheer volume, spontaneously triggered cortical spreading depression (CSD) that leads to cell death following ischemia or trauma may contribute to injury development after ASDH. Therefore, we explored the occurrence of CSD by tissue impedance (IMP) measurement in a rat model subjected to ASDH. IMP and intraventricular and mean arterial pressur…

Sevoflurane Impairs Cerebral Blood Flow Autoregulation in Rats: Reversal by Nonselective Nitric Oxide Synthase Inhibition

2005

UNLABELLED In this study, we investigated the effects of 1.0 and 2.0 minimum alveolar anesthetic concentration (MAC) sevoflurane on cerebral blood flow (CBF) autoregulation before and after nonselective inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) synthase in rats. Rats were randomly assigned as follows: Group 1 (n = 8): 1.0 MAC sevoflurane; Groups 2 and 3 (n = 8 per group): 2.0 MAC sevoflurane. Assessment of autoregulation within a mean arterial blood pressure range of 140-60 mm Hg was performed by graded hemorrhage before and after administration of l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME, 30 mg/kg IV, Groups 1 and 2) or during hypocapnia (Group 3). In 10 additional animals, brain tissue NO(2)(-) concentratio…

Assessment of mental stress through the analysis of physiological signals acquired from wearable devices

2019

Mental stress is a physiological state that directly correlates to the quality of life of individuals. Generally speaking, but especially true for disabled or elderly subjects, the assessment of such condition represents a very strong indicator correlated to the difficulties, and, in some case, to the frustration that derives from the execution of a task that results troublesome to be accomplished. This article describes a novel procedure for the assessment of the mental stress level through the use of low invasive wireless wearable devices. The information contained in electrocardiogram, respiratory signal, blood volume pulse, and electroencephalogram was extracted to set up an estimator f…

Blood volume and extracellular space (ECS) of the whole body and some organs of the rat.

1978

Methods are described for estimation of blood volume and extracellular space (ECS) in the whole body and in some organs with 51Cr, 14C-thiocyanate and 3H-inulin. A mean blood volume of 47 ml/kg, a thiocyanate space of 350 ml/kg and a inulin space of 288 ml/kg were determined in the rat. The corresponding values of organs are shown in figures 1--3.

In vivo investigations on microcirculatory disturbances induced by crenated erythrocytes following norepinephrine application

1974

Using a special apparatus for high resolution cinephotomicrography, which allows simultaneous observation and recording of microcirculatory changes, alterations in blood flow patterns and in red cell shape during norepinephrine acting have been studied. Under physiological conditions, and during slowing of capillary blood flow due to gradual removing of 20–25% of the circulating blood volume, the normal red cells are extremely deformable while passing through mesenteric capillaries. After application of norepinephrine a general arteriolar constrictive response in the bowel wall occurs, causing a further slowing of the capillary blood flow in the mesentery. Under these circumstances the eryt…

Three-Dimensional Surface Display in Blood Pool Gated SPECT

1994

In 14 patients (4 in good health and 10 with coronary heart disease) a blood pool gated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was executed. The transaxial slices of the cardiac blood pool were reconstructed. A three-dimensional surface display was employed for the analysis of the tomographic data. A fixed distance, a fixed threshold (50%), and some different planes of view were employed. The test permitted visualiza tion of the ventricular and the atrial movements in all patients. The right ventricle was clearly seen in the right anterior oblique plane of view. The aortic beating was seen. In normal patients the left ventricle, clearly seen in left anterior oblique plane, shra…

A combination of umbilical artery PI and normalized blood flow volume in the umbilical vein: Venous–arterial index for the prediction of fetal outcome

2008

Abstract Objective The objective was to assess the diagnostic power of the umbilical venous–arterial index (VAI) as a combination of the pulsatility index in the umbilical artery and the normalized blood flow volume in the umbilical vein for the prediction of poor fetal outcome. Study design This was a prospective clinical study in which the umbilical artery PI (UAPI), the normalized umbilical vein blood volume flow rate ( n UV; ml/min/kg estimated fetal body weight), the venous–arterial index (VAI; n UV/UAPI), and the pulsatility index (PI) in the umbilical artery (UA), uterine artery (utA), middle cerebral artery (MCA), and aorta were determined in 181 fetuses once (at between 17 and 41 w…

Photoplethysmography imaging algorithm for continuous monitoring of regional anesthesia

2016

An efficient photoplethy smography imaging system and advanced algorithm for continuous monitoring of skin microcirculation was developed. The system comprises compact device and computer with software for visualizing of skin blood volume changes. The software is able to process high-resolution microcirculation amplitude maps in real-time. It was tested in clinical environment during the regional anesthesia procedures. The Eulerian-based method showed improved sensitivity and higher resolution of microcirculation maps.
