Stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare neurologic disorder characterized by progressively worsening rigidity and spasms of the axial and limb muscles. Dyspnea has been recently recognized as a common symptom in SPS,1 and life-threatening respiratory crises have been occasionally reported and suspected to be responsible for sudden death in these patients.2,3 The pathophysiologic mechanisms of these respiratory manifestations remain unclear. Some authors have hypothesized that rigidity and/or spasm of the muscles of the trunk could prevent normal rib cage movements and excursion of the diaphragm.1

Many biological attachment devices of insects, spiders and geckos consist of arrays of hairs (setae), which are terminated by contact elements of different shapes. However, the most frequently observed shape is a thin plate-like spatula. In spite of a rather wide range of sizes, most spatulae of different animals are not uniform, but rather possess a gradient in thickness and width. Here we show that the spatulae of insects and geckos become gradually thinner and wider approaching the end. A 24- year-old woman presented with acute onset of critical ischemia of her left thumb and index finger. Intraarterial angiography revealed an embolus in the distal radial artery and a thrombotic occlusion of the digital artery of the thumb and index finger. Post-traumatic lipoma of the parotid gland: case report

The incidence of lipoma among parotid tumours ranges from 0.6% to 4.4%, with most series reporting an incidence of 1%. The most common origin of these tumours, in the parotid gland, is from the superficial lobe and, only rarely, from the deep lobe. Lipomas, upon clinical history, are found to be most frequently related to an episode of trauma. Computed Tomography scan and Magnetic Resonance Imaging can lead to a pre-operative diagnosis of lipoma. The case is described of lipoma of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland.
Ski jumping boots limit effective take-off in ski jumping

In this study, we measured the vertical and horizontal take-off forces, plantar pressures and activation patterns of four muscles (vastus lateralis, gluteus maximus, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius) in 10 ski jumpers in simulated laboratory conditions when wearing either training shoes or ski jumping boots. We found significant differences in vertical (P < 0.001), horizontal (P < 0.05) and resultant (P < 0.001) take-off velocities and vertical force impulse (P < 0.01). Introduction: Some studies report that atopic patients have a greater frequency of delayed-type sensitization than non-atopic patients. Objective: To determine the influence of the atopic condition on delayed sensitization to dental materials. Design: cross-sectional study. Methods: Forty (40) atopic subjects and forty (40) non-atopic subjects, of both sexes, between 20 and 65 years of age were included. Methodical aspects of the relationship between pedalling rate and rotating mass and perceived exertion rating (PER; Borg, 1962) were studied in trained, untrained, and ill subjects in bicycle ergometry. Pedalling rate varied between 40 and 100 rpm, work load steps were 5, 10, 15 and 20 mkp/sec in the healthy subjects, and 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 mkp/sec in the patients. PER decreased with increasing pedalling rate in all healthy subjects. In the patients, PER increased moderately at work load of 2.5 mkp/sec, but decreased at higher work loads up to 80 rpm, followed by a slight increase at 100 rpm. Background The retrotransverse foramen is a nonmetric variant of C1 that consists of an abnormal accessory foramen on the posterior root of the transverse process. Case Description During a study on the prevalence of the retrotransverse foramen in 150 dry C1 vertebrae, we observed an exceptional C1 (0.67%) with a right double retrotransverse foramen of the 14 C1 vertebrae (9.3%). This has not been reported previously in the literature. No osteogenic reaction and no degenerative signs were observed in this C1 with the double retrotransverse foramen.
