Anisotropic chemical etching of semipolar \{10\bar {1}\bar {1}\}\mbox {/} \{10\bar {1}{+}1\} ZnO crystallographic planes: polarity versus dangling bo…
2009
ZnO thin films grown by metal?organic vapor phase epitaxy along the nonpolar direction and exhibiting semipolar facets have been chemically etched with HCl. In order to get an insight into the influence of the ZnO wurtzite structure in the chemical reactivity of the material, Kelvin probe microscopy and convergent beam electron diffraction have been employed to unambiguously determine the absolute polarity of the facets, showing that facets are unstable upon etching in an HCl solution and transform into planes. In contrast, facets undergo homogeneous chemical etching perpendicular to the initial crystallographic plane. The observed etching behavior has been explained in terms of surface oxy…
Theory of spontaneous polarization and birefringence in the tetragonal phase of KNbO3
1995
Abstract The microscopic mechanism of optical anisotropy in the tetragonal phase of KNbO3 is discussed taking account of the dipole-dipole effect due to the ionic and electronic polarizations of the crystal and the spontaneous Kerr effect. The last effect is a cause of the strong local field acting on the constituent ions. For the spontaneous polarization we use only the first effect. It is found that the birefringence and the spontaneous polarization are in good agreement with the experimental data.
Inhibition Mechanism of SARS‐CoV‐2 Main Protease with Ketone‐Based Inhibitors Unveiled by Multiscale Simulations: Insights for Improved Designs**
2021
Abstract We present the results of classical and QM/MM simulations for the inhibition of SARS‐CoV‐2 3CL protease by a hydroxymethylketone inhibitor, PF‐00835231. In the noncovalent complex the carbonyl oxygen atom of the warhead is placed in the oxyanion hole formed by residues 143 to 145, while P1–P3 groups are accommodated in the active site with interactions similar to those observed for the peptide substrate. According to alchemical free energy calculations, the P1′ hydroxymethyl group also contributes to the binding free energy. Covalent inhibition of the enzyme is triggered by the proton transfer from Cys145 to His41. This step is followed by the nucleophilic attack of the Sγ atom on …
Synthesis, characterization and study of covalently modified triazole LAPONITE® edges
2020
Abstract LAPONITE® (Lap) clay mineral was successful functionalized by triazole groups in a two steps procedure. First, the Lap edges were modified with 3-azidopropyltrimethoxysilane by traditional heating and microwave irradiation. Microwave irradiation allowed us to obtain high loading onto the Lap edges in lower times compared to those obtained through conventional method. Afterwards, the triazole moieties were obtained by reaction between azido functionalized Lap and propargyl alcohol. The successful functionalization of Lap was proved by thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and ζ-potential measurements. Finally, the effects of the surface modificatio…
ChemInform Abstract: Photochemical Transformations of Some Neoclerodane and Labdane Diterpene Ketones.
2010
Some neoclerodane (2–4) and labdane (5 and 6) diterpene ketones having a β- or γ-hydroxy function, an α-epoxy group, or an α-olefinic double bond have been irradiated at λ = 313 nm in dry solvents (benzene or methanol). Fruticolone (2) yielded the naturally occurring 5,6-seco-neoclerodan-6,1α-olide derivative fruticolide (1), while hispanolone (5) gave the δ-lactone 8, both transformations involving a Norrish type I photoreaction. The α,β-unsaturated ketone derivative 4 was transformed into 7 by a stereoselective intramolecular [2+2] cycloaddition reaction involving its furanic 13(16)-double bond. Finally, the α-epoxy ketone 6 was rearranged to the 10(98)abeo-labda-7,9-dione derivative 10. …
Trehalose interacts with phospholipid polar heads in Langmuir monolayers
2000
Surface pressure−area isotherms, surface potential-area isotherms and fluorescence microscopy were employed to study the behavior of phospholipid monolayers at the air/water interface when trehalose was added to the aqueous subphase. In the presence of this sugar, the critical area corresponding to the onset of surface potential increases, indicating that trehalose is participating in the network of hydrogen bonds between the phospholipid polar heads. In addition, it causes an expansion of the isotherm, hindering the formation of the liquid-condensed phase. The collapse area is significantly increased, indicating that trehalose takes part in the monolayer structure without being expelled ev…
Langmuir films and Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers incorporating mechanically-threaded molecules-pseudorotaxanes
1996
This paper describes the synthesis of a π-electron rich aromatic lipid containing a polyether thread intercepted by a 1,5-dioxynaphthalene moiety. The terminus of one end of the polyether is a methoxyl group and the other a glycerol unit linked via the 2-oxo position, while the 1,3-oxo functions are covalently attached to octadecyl chains. This compound, when cospread at the air-water interface with the tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene), and the phospholipid, dimyristoylphosphatidic acid, as its monoanion, forms self-assembled pseudorotaxanes which are self-organized into a two-dimensional supramolecular array at the interface. The electrostatic interactions between t…
Synthesis of a Fullerene[60] Cryptate and Systematic Langmuir-Blodgett and Thin-Film Investigations of Amphiphilic Fullerene Derivatives
1995
The synthesis of the first fullerene cryptate 7 with a sodium ion bound to a benzo[2.2.2]cryptand covalently attached to a methanofullerene[60] is described. The amphiphilic properties of 7 as well as of a variety of other covalent fullerene derivatives with polar functional groups and the ability of these compounds to form Langmuir monolayers at the air-water interface were investigated in a systematic study. Among these derivatives are Diels-Alder adducts of C60 and methanofullerenes, four of which are fullerene C-glycosides. The films at the water surface were characterized by their surface pressure versus molecular area isotherms, compression and expansion cycles, and optical light micr…
Tripyridinophane Platform Containing Three Acetate Pendant Arms: An Attractive Structural Entry for the Development of Neutral Eu(III) and Tb(III) Co…
2020
We report a detailed characterization of Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes derived from a tripyridinophane macro cycle bearing three acetate side arms (H3tpptac). Tpptac3- displays an overall basicity (Σ log KiH) of 24.5, provides the formation of mononuclear ML species, and shows a good binding affinity for Ln3+ (log KLnL = 17.5-18.7). These complexes are also thermodynamically stable at physiological pH (pEu = 18.6, pTb = 18.0). It should be noted that the pGd value of Gd-tpptac (18.4) is only slightly lower than that of commercially available MRI contrast agents such as Gd-dota (pGd = 19.2). Moreover, a very good selectivity for these ions over the endogenous cations (log KCuL = 14.4, log KZnL = 1…
