An approach to the electrochemical activity of poly-(phenothiazines) by complementary electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Vis–NIR spectroscopy

2010

Abstract The electroactivity of two poly-(phenothiazine), the poly-(Azure A) and the poly-(Methylene Blue), has been compared in this work. The spectroelectrochemical results prove clearly the existence of two electroactive moieties integrated in the polymeric lattice, the phenothiazine ring (detected by changes of absorbance at 590 and 685 nm) and the newly formed covalent links which fixes the monomers in the backbone of the polymer (detected by changes of absorbance at 460 and 875 nm). Differences in the electrochemical response of both polymers are due to differences in this covalent link. However in both polymers, the charge balance during electrochemical reactions takes place by the e…

Structural control of mixed ionic and electronic transport in conducting polymers

2016

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate), PEDOT:PSS, has been utilized for over two decades as a stable, solution-processable hole conductor. While its hole transport properties have been the subject of intense investigation, recent work has turned to PEDOT:PSS as a mixed ionic/electronic conductor in applications including bioelectronics, energy storage and management, and soft robotics. Conducting polymers can efficiently transport both holes and ions when sufficiently hydrated, however, little is known about the role of morphology on mixed conduction. Here, we show that bulk ionic and electronic mobilities are simultaneously affected by processing-induced change…

Hybrid Materials Based on Polyoxometalates with Solid State Properties

2003

Molecular materials with cooperative physical properties constitute one of the most active focus of interest in contemporary materials science. An attractive chemical feature of these materials derives from the possibility of building them from molecular bricks using the advantages provided by molecular chemistry and the knowledge achieved over the last 20 years in the so-called molecular engineering. From the point of view of the physical properties, it is well known that molecular materials can exhibit the properties typically associated with the inorganic network solids, as for example metallic conductivity and superconductivity [1], ferromagnetism [2] and non-linear optics [3].

Mass/charge balance as a tool to estimate dimensional change in polypyrrole-based actuators

2006

The deconvolution of the voltammograms of polypyrrole electrochemistry has proved to be possible through the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance data using the F(dm/dQ) function. This deconvolution allows the evolution of the thickness of the polypyrrole films during their redox processes to be estimated and therefore, the mechanical contraction/decontraction of this polymer as a function of the ionic exchange processes can be evaluated. Double- and Multi-Calixarentes

2006

Calixarenes are easily (and often selectively) functionalized and therefore they can be combined in various ways to larger molecules containing more than one calixarene substructure. In the following chapter we will try to give an overview on such multicalixarenes held together by "conventional" covalent links. Self-assembled structures are treated separately in Chapter 8. The earliest examples for double calixarenes of importance are the carcerands and hemicarcerands of D. Cram in which two resorcarene derived cavitands are combined. Due to their unique properties to include (more or less permanently) smaller molecules, they are treated separately in Chapter 10. Further combinations of cav…

Fourfold tetraurea calix[4]arenes--potential cores for the formation of self-assembled dendrimers.

2005

Wide rim tetraurea calix[4]arenes monofunctionalized at the narrow rim by COOH or NH2 have been synthesized in five steps from t-butylcalix[4]arene tripropylether. Their covalent linkage via the narrow rim to a central calix[4]arene fixed in the 1,3-alternate conformation led to pentacalix[4]arenes 9 bearing four tetraurea derivatives in the cone conformation in a flexible tetrahedral arrangement. Their self-assembly via the formation of hydrogen bonded dimeric capsules has been studied under different conditions. A fourfold heterodimerisation of tetrakis-tetraurea derivatives of type 9 with tetratosylurea 10 has been confirmed by 1H NMR-spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering.

A conformationally adaptive macrocycle : conformational complexity and host–guest chemistry of zorb[4]arene

2018

Large amplitude conformational change is one of the features of biomolecular recognition and is also the basis for allosteric effects and signal transduction in functional biological systems. However, synthetic receptors with controllable conformational changes are rare. In this article, we present a thorough study on the host–guest chemistry of a conformationally adaptive macrocycle, namely per-O-ethoxyzorb[4]arene (ZB4). Similar to per-O-ethoxyoxatub[4]arene, ZB4 is capable of accommodating a wide range of organic cations. However, ZB4 does not show large amplitude conformational responses to the electronic substituents on the guests. Instead of a linear free-energy relationship, ZB4 foll…

Melamine induced conformational change of ethyl resorcinarene in solid state

2000

When ethyl resorcinarene (1) and melamine (2) are co-crystallised, all intramolecular hydrogen bonds keeping the resorcinarene in crown conformation are broken causing an unexpected conformational change to boat, and a highly ordered hydrogen bonded network is formed.

A Copper(II)-Cytidine Complex as a Building Unit for the Construction of an Unusual Three-Dimensional Coordination Polymer

2010

The chiral [Cu(cyd) 4 ] 6- anion acts as a multiarmed complex-ligand toward auxiliary copper(II) centers leading to the first example of cytidinate-bridged three-dimensional (3D) coordination polymer of formula [Cu 6 (H 2 O) 7 (ClO 4 ) 3 Cu(cyd) 4 ]-(ClO 4 ) 3 (1). Single crystal X-ray analysis of 1 shows a unique 3D covalent network supported by the exclusive hypercoordination of the cytidinate ligand that bridges four crystallographically independent copper(II) ions via the N3, O2, O2', O3', and O5' set of atoms. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 1.9-295 K reveal the coexistence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions within the hexacopper(II) core of 1, t…

2013

A series of six isostructural heterometallic trinuclear oxalate-bridged complexes of the formula (TDbenz)(2)(TsO)(2)[M(II)(H(2)O)(2){(μ-ox)M(III)(ox)(2)}(2)]·6H(2)O·2CH(3)OH (TDbenz = 1,3,5-tris[2-(1,3-diazolinium)]benzene; TsO = 4-methylbenzenesulfonate; ox = oxalate; M(III) = Fe, M(II) = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3); M(III) = Cr, M(II) = Mn (4), Fe (5), Co (6)) have been synthesized from (NH(4))(3)[M(III)(ox)(3)]·3H(2)O, the chloride salts of the divalent metal ions and the tosylate salt of 1,3,5-tris[2-(1,3-diazolinium)]benzene (trisamidinium). Whereas the crystal structures of compounds 2, 3, 4 and 5 have been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, the structures of 1 and 6 have be…
