Fighting the COVID-19 Crisis: Debt Monétisation and EU Recovery Bonds

AbstractThis paper highlights some peculiar characteristics of the economic crisis induced by the spread of COVID-19. It suggests two intertwined policy measures in order to tackle the emergency phase of the crisis and to support the economy in the subsequent recovery phase. The proposed short-term policy measures offer policy responses in the event of a second wave of coronavirus infections in the coming months. Financial Companies in Latvia: Why are they Coming to the Bond Market?

In the period 2013-2017 Latvian corporate bond market had experienced the abrupt growth of the number of public Latvian corporate bond issues outstanding. The base of the expansion was formed by the financing activity of Latvian financial sector issuers (FSIs) with their weight in the pool of corporate bond issues listed in Nasdaq Riga at 85%. In 2019, FSIs remain the main issuer in Latvian corporate bond market (64% of the number of issues (Nasdaq Baltic, 2019)). The financing needs and preferences of the FSIs not only shape the segment profitability but also build Latvian corporate bond market sustainability.

Flexural behavior of corroded RC beams

Synopsis: A handily model to evaluate the bending resistance and the ductility of corroded beams critical in flexure and shear is proposed and debated. Effects of diffused and pitting corrosion on steel bars, compressive concrete strength reduction and concrete bond strength reduction due to rust creation are modelled. Practical method derived on limit state theory was here used to calculate the flexural and shear strength and the available ductility. The effectiveness of the model was also corroborated against numerous results collected in the literature pertaining to bending and shear resistance.

The development of efficient methods for facilitating N-C(O) bond activation in amides is an important objective in organic synthesis that permits the manipulation of the traditionally unreactive amide bonds. Herein, we report a comparative evaluation of a series of cyclic amides as activating groups in amide N-C(O) bond cross-coupling. A transition-metal-free protocol for the redox-neutral light-induced decarboxylative coupling of carboxylic acids with (hetero)aromatic nitriles at ambient temperature is presented. A broad scope of acids and nitriles is accepted, and alcohols can be coupled in a similar fashion through their oxalate half esters. Various inexpensive sources of UV light and even sunlight can be used to achieve this C–C bond formation proceeding through a free radical mechanism.
