Otoneurological management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma

Objective: The aim of the study is to review the management of petrous apex cholesterol granuloma. The surgical approaches for drainage or total removal and the wait and see policy were analyzed, and outcomes were evaluated. Methods: Retrospective charts of 27 patients managed for petrous apex cholesterol granuloma with a minimum follow-up of 12 months were analyzed in a quartenary skull base center. Presenting symptoms and signs were recorded, and radiologic imaging was evaluated. Management options included wait and see policy and surgery by several approaches. The challenges of monoaxial bone transport in orthopedics and traumatology

Background. Bone defects represent the main challenging problem for the orthopedic surgeon and, consequently, they increase the duration of hospitalization, risk of complications and health expenditures. The aim of our observational, descriptive and retrospective study is to evaluate the outcomes of patients treated with a mo­nolateral external fixator for bone defects greater than 3 cm. Material and methods. Between January 2003 and January 2013, 21 patients were treated at our center by bone transfer with a monolateral external fixator. Mucopolysaccharidosis I Hurler (MPS IH) is a progressive multisystemic disorder caused by alpha-L-iduronidase deficiency. First choice of treatment in MPS IH children is haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The effect of HSCT has been shown to have limited influence on skeletal manifestations by poor penetration of musculoskeletal tissues by the enzyme derived from donor leucocytes. Envelope approach for onlay bone grafting : preliminary surgical and prosthetic results

Minimally invasive surgery principles have been applied to preprosthetic-implant surgery, and an adequate presurgical planning reduces morbidity in both harvesting and stabilization of the bone grafts. High-energy extracorporeal shock wave treatment of nonunions.

Forty-three consecutive patients who did not have healing of tibial or femoral diaphyseal and metaphyseal fractures and osteotomies for at least 9 months after injury or surgery were examined prospectively for use of high-energy extracorporeal shock waves. Former treatment modalities (cast, external fixator, plate osteosynthesis, limitation of weightbearing) remained unchanged. The optimal approach to obtain an adequate graft for transplantation in patients with poor peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) mobilization remains unclear. We retrospectively assessed the impact of different strategies of second-line stem cell harvest on the transplantation outcome of patients who failed PBSC mobilization in our institution. Correlation between Density and Resorption of Fresh-Frozen and Autogenous Bone Grafts

Trial Design. This analysis compared the outcome of fresh-frozen versus autologous bone block grafts for horizontal ridge augmentation in patients with Cawood and Howell class IV atrophies.Methods. Seventeen patients received autologous grafts and 21 patients received fresh-frozen bone grafts. Patients underwent CT scans 1 week and 6 months after surgery for graft volume and density analysis.Results. Two autologous and 3 fresh-frozen grafts failed. Autologous and fresh-frozen grafts lost, respectively, 28% and 46% of their initial volume(P=0.028).
