Informal use of social media in higher education: A case study of Facebook groups

Abstract Recent research in Norway reveals significant differences between how students and educators in higher education report using social media in the context of university activities. Students seem to use such media at their own initiative and largely outside the academic agenda. This study looks further into students’ use of social media by means of a case study of four, student-initiated, Facebook groups created in connection with campus-based courses. Leveraging tangible and intangible assets by using a possible firm competitiveness index

More and more, in order to achieve global competitiveness, firms need to develop and apply unique and dynamic competitiveness models. With this paper, we propose an index that measures firm competitiveness by taking into consideration some tangible and intangible assets. This index demonstrates the fact that a firm is highly competitive as long as its managers are able to mix the tangible and intangible assets in the most effective and efficient manner; therefore, a firm can get the same score of competitiveness by using different combinations of assets and by giving different importance coefficients to the tangible and intangible assets.

Plant hunting: exploring the behaviour of amateur botanists in the field

We asked what are the behavioural and logistic preferences of professional and amateur botanists when exploring flora in the field. We extracted temporal and spatial data on vas- cular plant species occurrences from three datasets of Sicilian flora: a subset of iNaturalist, a dataset collected by a Facebook group focused on the flora of Sicily and a subset of the professional database European Vegetation Archive. We used the time span of individual contributor’s activity as a proxy of their commitment to collecting information about the flora of Sicily. The faculties of the humanities of the newly established University of Latvia had to create their libraries from the ground up, as opposed to the technical libraries who had partly preserved the stocks from the departments of the predecessor, the RPI. Books for the library of the Faculty of Philology and Philosophy were obtained through governmental allocations, purchases, and donations, and so it grew from 350 books in 1919 to more than 40 thousand in 1939. This article explores the first years of the formation of library holdings.

W literaturze glottodydaktycznej Franciszek Kuszel pojawia się sporadycznie jako autor rozmówek polsko-angielskich pt. Rozmowy podręczne dla podróżujących do Londynu Polaków nieumiejących zupełnie Języka Angielskiego (1857). Pozostawił po sobie także inne materiały: „Książkę Podręczną do Uczenia się Języka Angielskiego dla Uczniów Szkoły Główney w Warszawie” [1864] napisaną na potrzeby lektoratu angielskiego w Szkole Głównej Warszawskiej i powieloną metodą litograficzną, a także „Dziennik czynności osobistych od dnia 25 września 1834” – rękopiśmienne źródło informacji biograficznych. Artykuł stawia sobie dwa podstawowe cele: nakreślić biografię autora oraz dokonać analizy jego podręcznika.
