We analyse Popular Science Archaeological Books as a way of spreading the popularization of archaeological heritage. In that sense, we identifi…

Dr Monk's medical digest.

2003

The Liber passionalis is an early and hitherto mostly unexplored example of a composite medical work on diagnosis and therapy, similar to the better-known compilations circulating under the titles Petroncellus and Gariopontus (Passionarius Galieni). It shows the efforts made to provide comprehensive coverage of morbid conditions drawn from a choice of the best sources available to the compiler, sources which in some instances complement or enhance our knowledge of ancient medicine in a way overlooked by specialists in the field for a long time and which provide the best clue when trying to assess medical expertise at the turn of the first millennium. The paper explores the transmission, str…

“From Savage to Sublime (And Partway Back): Indians and Antiquity in Early Nineteenth-Century American Literature”

2016

This article examines the comparisons made between Indians and Antiquity in early nineteenth-century American literature (notably in the works of Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper); to do so, it begins by reaching back to references in European and American writings of the eighteenth century. One of the main motivations behind the associations between Native Americans and the Ancient World made in the early decades of the nineteenth century was to “elevate” Indians in order to transform them into worthy symbols of the recently established United States. Such associations also rendered them suitable subjects for treatment by authors inspired to a large extent by the Romantic Moveme…

INTERPRETARE ORAZIO CON ORAZIO? A PROPOSITO DI CARMINA, LIBRO IV

2011

In the work “Mutat terra vices. Identità, cambiamento e memoria culturale nell’ultimo Orazio” (Palermo 2010), I focused my attention on interpretative and methodological questions concerning the last Horatian book of carmina. In this paper the aim is to demonstrate how the topic of change and discontinuity points out, on the surface of these poems, the presence of conspicuous interferences between the execution of a role by authorial "persona", and the expression, at the same time, of role distance. I mean here especially to describe how gift, reciprocity and exchange in patronage frames contributed to the definition of Horace’s self and of his official duties as interpreter of common memor…

Searching the Web for conflicting topics: Page and user factors

2013

Web users tend to search only the pages displayed at the top of the search engine results page (the 'top link' heuristic). Although it might be reasonable to use this heuristic to navigate simple and unambiguous facts, it might be risky when searching for conflicting socio-scientific topics, such as potential measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In the present study, we explored the extent to which students consider other Web page characteristics, such as topic relevance and trustworthiness, when searching and bookmarking pages concerning a conflicting topic. We also examined the extent to which prior background knowledge moderates students' behavior. The results revealed that while…

Multi-agent-based Order Book Model of financial markets

2006

We introduce a simple model for simulating financial markets, based on an order book, in which several agents trade one asset at a virtual exchange continuously. For a stationary market the structure of the model, the order flow rates of the different kinds of order types and the used price time priority matching algorithm produce only a diffusive price behavior. We show that a market trend, i.e. an asymmetric order flow of any type, leads to a non-trivial Hurst exponent for the price development, but not to "fat-tailed" return distributions. When one additionally couples the order entry depth to the prevailing trend, also the stylized empirical fact of "fat tails" can be reproduced by our …

Statistical analysis of financial returns for a multiagent order book model of asset trading

2007

We recently introduced a realistic order book model [T. Preis, Europhys. Lett. 75, 510 (2006)] which is able to generate the stylized facts of financial markets. We analyze this model in detail, explain the consequences of the use of different groups of traders, and focus on the foundation of a nontrivial Hurst exponent based on the introduction of a market trend. Our order book model supports the theoretical argument that a nontrivial Hurst exponent implies not necessarily long-term correlations. A coupling of the order placement depth to the market trend can produce fat tails, which can be described by a truncated Lévy distribution.

Parallelized short read assembly of large genomes using de Bruijn graphs

2011

Abstract Background Next-generation sequencing technologies have given rise to the explosive increase in DNA sequencing throughput, and have promoted the recent development of de novo short read assemblers. However, existing assemblers require high execution times and a large amount of compute resources to assemble large genomes from quantities of short reads. Results We present PASHA, a parallelized short read assembler using de Bruijn graphs, which takes advantage of hybrid computing architectures consisting of both shared-memory multi-core CPUs and distributed-memory compute clusters to gain efficiency and scalability. Evaluation using three small-scale real paired-end datasets shows tha…
