Treatment of the [2-Cp-9-tBuNH-closo-2,1,7,9-FeC 3 B 8 H 1 0 ] (1) ferratricarbollide (Cp = η 5 -C 5 H 5 -) with Na + C 1 0 H 8 - in 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) at room temperature produced an air-sensitive transient anion with a tentatively identified nido-[tBUNH-CpFeC 3 B 8 H 1 0 ] 2 - constitution. In-situ reaction of this low-stability ion with [CpFe(CO) 2 I] or [CpFe(CO) 2 ] 2 generated three violet diferratricarbaboranes identified as paramagnetic subcloso complexes [4,5-Cp 2 - -4,5,1,6,7-Fe 2 C 3 B 8 H 1 1 ] (2; yield 2%), [4,5-Cp 2 - -4,5,1,7,12-Fe 2 C 3 B 8 H 1 1 ] (3; yield 2%), and [7-tBuNH-4,5-Cp 2 - -4,5,1,7,12-Fe 2 C 3 B 8 H 1 0 ] (4; yield 14%). International audience; The diastereoselective synthesis of a P-chirogenic β-aminophosphine ligand with carbon–carbon bond formation of the ethano bridge in a 3:1 ratio via reaction of an α-metallated P-chirogenic phosphine borane with a benzaldimine is described. The diastereoselectivity is attributed to a transition state where the lithium cation chelates the phosphine borane carbanion and the nitrogen of the imine and the attack of the C@N occurs on the face opposite to the P–B bond, due to its interaction with the antibonding P–B bond. Reactions between high purity FeCl2 and the anion [nido-7-(tBuHN)-7,8,9-C3B8H10)]− (1−) have been used for efficient syntheses of the twelve-vertex double-cluster metallatricarbollide complexes of the para,para (p,p) type [closo-9,9′(RHN)2-commo-2,2′-FeII-1,7,9-(C3B8H10)-1′,7′,9′-(C3B8H10)] (2) (2a, R = tBu and 2b, R = H) (yields 42−45% for 2a). Compound 2b, which contains two reactive amino substituents conveniently attached to the tricarbollide subclusters in p-positions with respect to the metal center, was prepared via facile cleavage of the tBu substituent in 2a either by AlCl3 or by thermal means. Abstract Borylation of lithium indenide with BBrMe 2 gives the allylic 1-indenyl derivative (1-Ind)BMe 2 ( 1c ) together with the bis-allylic connected species (1-Ind) 2 BMe ( 3 ) and with BCl i Pr 2 , the allylic 1-indenyl (1-Ind)B i Pr 2 ( 1d ); the latter, with Et 3 N or Py added, rearranges to the vinylic 3-indenyl isomer (3-Ind)B i Pr 2 ( 2d ). The disubstituted indene C 9 H 6 Ind(SiMe 3 )B(O 2 C 2 Me 4 ) ( 5 ) was prepared from Li[C 9 H 6 B(O 2 C 2 Me 4 )] ( 4b ) and Me 3 SiCl. A neutral, formally 16pi-electron, tricyclic tetrahydrazidotetraborane was obtained in a two-step procedure involving self-assembly of a dilithiodiborate with B(4)N(8) framework and subsequent oxidation of the phenylborate moieties to boranes and biphenyl using Fe(II) as an oxidant.

The anionic chelating ligand [1,1'-(PPh 2 ) 2 -3,3'-Co(1,2-C 2 B 9 H 1 0 ) 2 ] - has been synthesized from [3,3'-Co(1,2-C 2 B 4 H 1 1 ) 2 ] - in very good yield in a one-pot process with an easy work-up procedure. The coordinating ability of this ligand has been studied with Group 11 metal ions (Ag, Au) and with transition-metal ions (Pd, Rh). The two dicarbollide halves of the [1,1'-(PPh 2 ) 2 -3,3'-Co(1,2-C 2 B 9 H 1 0 ) 2 ] - ligand can swing about one axis in a manner analogous to the constituent parts of BINAP and ferrocenyl phosphine derivatives. Reaction of the diborane(4) B(2)(NMe(2))(2)I(2) with two equivalents of K[(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))M(CO)(3)] (M=Cr, Mo, W) yielded the dinuclear boryloxycarbyne complexes [[(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))(OC)(2)M(triple bond)CO](2)B(2)(NMe(2))(2)] (4 a, M=Mo; b, M=W; c, M=Cr), which were fully characterised in solution by multinuclear NMR methods. The Mo and W complexes 4 a, b proved to be kinetically favoured products of this reaction and underwent quantitative rearrangement in solution to afford the complexes [[(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))(OC)(2)M(triple bond)CO]B(NMe(2))B(NMe(2))[M(CO)(3)(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))]] (5 a, M=Mo; b, M=W); 5 a was characterised by X-ray crystallography in the solid state. The trideuteriomethylation of BH vertices in CB11H12− and its derivatives with CD3OTf (OTf=triflate, trifluoromethanesulfonate) yields a mixture of BCD3 and BCHD2 substitution products, thus demonstrating the intermediacy of a species with a long enough lifetime for hydrogen scrambling between the boron vertex and the methyl substituent. No such scrambling is observed if CD3OTf is used to methylate toluene.
