Coupling of Azomethine Ylides with Nitrilium Derivatives ofcloso-Decaborate Clusters: A Synthetic and Theoretical Study
2012
The azomethine ylides p-R3C5H4N+CH−COC6H4R2-p (3 a: R3=H, R2=H, X=Br; 3 b: R3=H, R2=Me, X=I; 3 c: R3=H, R2=OMe, X=I; 3 d: R3=H, R2=F, X=I; 3 e: R3=Me, R2=Me, X=Br) react with the nitrile functionality of the closo-decaborate clusters [Bun4N][B10H9(NCR1)] (1 a: R1=Me; 1 b: R1=Et; 1 c: R1=Ph) in a CH3NO2 solution under mild conditions (20–25 °C, 2 min) to afford selectively products of the nucleophilic addition (ca. quantitative yields based on NMR analysis in [D6]DMSO, 71–87 % yield of isolated products). These products are the borylated enamino ketones as the salts bearing exclusively a tetrabutylammonium cation [Bun4N][B10H9{NCR1=C(N+C5H4R3-p)COC6H4R2-p}] (4 a–h,k–n) or the mixed salts [Bu…
Efficient Synthesis of (P-Chirogenic) o-Boronated Phosphines from sec-Phosphine Boranes
2015
An efficient synthesis of boronated phosphines with an o-phenylene-bridge prepared from sec-phosphine boranes and using benzyne chemistry is reported. Successive reactions of sec-phosphine boranes with n-BuLi and 1,2-dibromobenzene, and then with boron reagents, afford the o-boronatophenylphosphine derivatives in 71% yields. The use of P-chirogenic sec-phosphine boranes leads to the free boronated phosphines with retention of configuration at the P-center after decomplexation. The reaction of P-chirogenic o-boronatophenylphosphine with KHF2 affords the corresponding trifluoroborated phosphine with ee >98%.
Intramolecular Communication in Anionic Oxidized Phosphanes through a Chelated Proton
2015
Oxidation of the 1,2-(PR2 )2 -1,2-closo-C2 B10 H10 (R=Ph, iPr) platform with hydrogen peroxide in acetone is a two-step procedure in which partial deboronation of the closo cluster and oxidation of the phosphorus atoms occur. Based on NMR spectroscopic and kinetic data, we demonstrate that the phosphorus atoms are oxidized in the first step, followed by cluster deboronation. DFT calculations and natural-bond orbital (NBO) analysis were used to obtain insight into the electronic structures of diphosphane ortho-carborane derivatives.
Adsorptive Separation of CO2 by a Hydrophobic Carborane-Based Metal-Organic Framework under Humid Conditions
2023
We report that the carborane-based metal-organic framework (MOF) mCB-MOF-1 can achieve high adsorptive selectivity for CO2:N2 mixtures. This hydrophobic MOF presenting open metal sites shows high CO2 adsorption capacity and remarkable selectivity values that are maintained even under extremely humid conditions. The comparison of mCB-MOF-1' with MOF-74(Ni) demonstrates the superior performance of the former under challenging moisture operation conditions.

A Discrete P⋅⋅⋅II⋅⋅⋅P Assembly: The Large Influence of Weak Interactions on the31P NMR Spectra of Phosphane–Diiodine Complexes
2006
Thioethers, except derivatives of [7-R-7,8-C2B9H11] , are more weakly coordinating ligands than phosphanes. This difference is evidenced by the I I distances in the spokeshaped charge-transfer (CT) complexes R2S·I2 and R3P·I2 (Figure 1). The I I distance is sensitive to the strength of the interaction between the s* LUMO orbital on I2 and the HOMO orbital of the donor atom: the stronger the donor, the longer the I I distance. In these spoke CT complexes, the I I distance varies from 3.2 0.2 7 in R3P·I2 adducts [5] to 2.80 0.05 7 in R2S·I2 adducts, [6] indicating the weaker donor character of the thioether group. Whereas extended I2 arrays, spoke adducts of I2, polyiodides, and other structu…
Icosahedral carboranes as scaffolds for congested regioselective polyaryl compounds: the distinct distance tuning of C–C and its antipodal B–B
2019
Four-fold aryl substituted o-carborane derivatives with defined patterns of substitution at the antipodal region of the cluster carbon atoms have been achieved. It is proven that this region is congested but lacks steric hindrance. Also, the two antipodal sites Cc–Cc and B9–B12 are affected very distinctly by electron donor substituents.
Thermochromic Fluorescence from B18H20(NC5H5)2: An Inorganic–Organic Composite Luminescent Compound with an Unusual Molecular Geometry
2017
BH(NCH) is a rare example of two conjoined boron hydride subclusters of nido and arachno geometrical character. At room temperature, solutions of BH(NCH) emit a 690 nm fluorescence. In the solid state, this emission is shifted to 620 nm and intensifies due to restriction of the rotation of the pyridine ligands. In addition, there is a thermochromicity to the fluorescence of BH(NCH). Cooling to 8 K engenders a further shift in the emission wavelength to 585 nm and a twofold increase in intensity. Immobilization in a polystyrene thin-film matrix results in an efficient absorption of pumping excitation energy at 414 nm and a 609 nm photostable fluorescence. Such fluorescence from polystyrene t…
Synthesis, Characterization, and Properties of Weakly Coordinating Anions Based on tris-Perfluoro-tert-Butoxyborane
2017
A convenient method for the preparation of strongly Lewis acidic tris-perfluoro-tert-butoxyborane B(ORF)3 (1), (ORF = OC(CF3)3) was developed, and its X-ray structure was determined. 1 was used as a precursor, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and volume-based thermodynamics, for the synthesis of [NEt4][NCB(ORF)3] (3) and [NMe4][FB(ORF)3] (5) and the novel large and weakly coordinating anion salts [Li 15-Crown-5][B(ORF)4] (2) and [NEt4][CN{B(ORF)3}2] (4). The stability of [B(ORF)4]− was compared with that of some related known weakly coordinating anions by appropriate DFT calculations.
Towards purely inorganic clusters in medicine: Biocompatible divalent cations as counterions of cobaltabis(dicarbollide) and its iodinated derivatives
2021
Monovalent cations, Cs+, and alkylammonium ([NR4]+) salts have traditionally been used to precipitate the anions of boranes, carborane and metallocarborane clusters. In contrast, in the body and in living organisms in general, divalent cations have a special relevance. In this work, we isolate for the first time the cobaltabis(dicarbollide) salts of the biocompatible divalent cations of biological importance that can have application both in biology and in materials science. The preparation of Ca2+, Mg2+ and Fe2+ salts of anionic iodinated nido-[C2B9H12]− and cobaltabis(dicarbollide) as well as its di-, tetra- and octa-iodinated derivatives are reported. Ca2+ and Mg2+ are hard Lewis acids a…
