Visibility in mediated borderscapes : The hunger strike of asylum seekers as an embodiment of border violence
2018
In 2012, two Afghan asylum seekers camped outside the Parliament building in Helsinki during a hunger strike that lasted for 72 days. Although the protest was very visible in the city space, the mainstream media and most politicians ignored it. This paper analyzes the protest and its mediation through the concepts of borderscape and visibility. Using methods of visual and discourse analysis, we examine the ways in which the hunger strike protest – and its mediation – negotiate the (in)visibility of borders. We show how the city can be a site for both policing and for politicizing asylum issues. In particular, we focus on the ways in which protesting asylum seekers embody borders and border …
A geographical note about the journey
2022
This paper summarizes the contents of the in print monographic volume entitled About the journey. Stasis, chiasmus and interruptions. A geography essay. It aims at being part of the epistemological debate on the role of the journey intended as a complex action through which relationships between man and space are strengthened and the fundamental cognitive processes are activated. In the first chapter, we want to foster a consideration on the tripartite scan that has the journey as the terminal outcome: stasis, trigger, experience. The paper has its roots in the international and national debates of New Cultural Geography, an essential theoretical prerequisite for setting up a theoretically …
About the journey. Stasis, chiasmus and interruptions A geography essay
2022
The journey is a very stimulating function to read the congeries of relationships that intersect and signify the bonds of men with places. A device that activates, in Geography, different heuristic perspectives. The first chapter then aims at being part of the epistemological debate on the function of journey intended as a complex action through which relationships between man and space are strengthened and the fundamental cognitive processes are activated. In particular, in the first chapter, we want to foster a consideration on the tripartite scan that has the terminal outcome in the journey: stasis, trigger, experience. The second chapter then follows some literary suggestions to try to …
Solitary keratoacanthoma involving upper lip: a diagnostic dilemma - case report and a brief review
2010
Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a benign epithelial proliferative lesion which frequently occurs on the sun exposed areas of the skin. KA originates within the pilosebaceous apparatus of the skin and may be solitary or multiple. Solitary KA can be difficult to differentiate from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) both clinically and microscopically. However, the clinical course of the lesion and its ability to self involute makes it a distinct clinical entity. Solitary KA appears on the vermilion border of the lower lips with some frequency. A case of keratoacanthoma involving the upper lip is reported presenting as an exophytic growth that resolved after excisional biopsy. Photo- graphic documentation …

Study of the bacillus thuringiensis Cry1Ia protein oligomerization promoted by midgut brush border membrane vesicles of lepidopteran and coleopteran …
2020
Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) produces insecticidal proteins that are either secreted during the vegetative growth phase or accumulated in the crystal inclusions (Cry proteins) in the stationary phase. Cry1I proteins share the three domain (3D) structure typical of crystal proteins but are secreted to the media early in the stationary growth phase. In the generally accepted mode of action of 3D Cry proteins (sequential binding model), the formation of an oligomer (tetramer) has been described as a major step, necessary for pore formation and subsequent toxicity. To know if this could be extended to Cry1I proteins, the formation of Cry1Ia oligomers was studied by Western blot, after the incuba…
Identità russe in transito nella New York di Ljudmila Ulickaja
2021
The essay analyses the atypical concept of border in the povest' by Ljudmila Ulickaja 'Veselye pochorony' (1997). This short novel offers several images related to the symbolic setting represented mainly by the city of New York, which embodies an idealized 'border city', where some Russians immigrants arrive and meet in 1991. First of all my research aims to to examine the role played by a few peculiar places represented in 'Veselye pochorony', in order to highlight the emotional dynamics of some Ulickaja's characters, who have to face the difficulties of integration in a cultural and social environment, totally different from the one they come from. Moreover this essay investigates the dev…
