Phenolic Compounds from Lactuca viminea L.

Abstract The aerial part of Lactuca viminea L. was examined for the presence of phenolic compounds. Six different flavonoids were isolated and identified by UV spectra, TLC, HPLCDAD , 1H NMR and 13C NMR. They were identified as apigenin, luteolin, quercetin, luteolin-7-O-glucoside, quercetin-3-O-glucoside and luteolin-7-O-glucuronide-6″methyl ester. Three phenolic acids were also detected: caffeic, ferulic and chlorogenic acid.

Cardenolide variation within and among natural populations of Digitalis obscura

Summary Cardenolide content in 49 wild-growing Digitalis obscura plants from six natural populations on the Iberian Peninsula was determined by HPLC. Series A and B glycosides were the predominant cardenolides in all samples, but absolute values varied among and within populations. Hierarchic analysis of variance showed that the proportion of variation attributable to individuals was significantly higher than that attributable to population differences. Furthermore, analyses from greenhouse-grown plants, generated from seeds collected from selected parental genotypes, attributed nearly all the variability in cardenolide content to single plants. Seed lipids composition is a tool to discriminate among plant taxa and is related to phylogeny and biogeographic distribution. Aim of the present study was to evaluate the fatty acid (FA) composition of the seed lipids from nine natural Chamaerops humilis L. population and its relation with the climatic traits of the collection sites. The average seed lipids content was 54.8 g kg21 and the most represented FAs were oleic (478 g kg21 oil) and linoleic (230 g kg21 oil), with significant differences among the accessions. Procedures and factors promoting plant regeneration from callus and isolated cells were investigated in Lavandula latifolia Medicus. Callus was obtained from cotyledon explants cultured on MS medium supplemented with 0.34 (xM 2,4-D. Detection of the lunasin peptide in oats (Avena sativa L)

We report the first discovery of lunasin in oats (Avena sativa L). Lunasin is a novel cancer preventive, anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-reducing peptide originally isolated from soy and later found in cereals (barley, rye, wheat, triticale). Lunasin was detected in oats using LC–MS/MS analysis. The chromatograms and mass spectra of lunasin isolated from five oat genotypes were compared with those of the synthetic lunasin peptide. We measured the lunasin content in harvests of two years and found that all tested oat genotypes contained the lunasin peptide. In Vitro Propagation of Sideritis angustifolia Lag.

Summary Hypocotyl, root and cotyledon explants from 30 day old seedlings of Sideritis angustifolia Lag. were cultured on Murashige and Skoog nutrient medium. Organogenesis of roots and shoots was induced with treatments containing BA or KIN in combination with NAA, IAA or 2,4-D, however, those combinations including NAA and BA were optimal. Most regenerated shoots developed roots when transferred to medium without growth regulators. Rooted plantlets were successfully transplanted into soil.

Hormonal regulatory processes controlling in vitro morphogenesis of grapevine inflorescence primordia, excised from latent buds from November to April, were investigated. Cytokinin (benzylaminopurine, BAP), gibberellin (GA3) and auxin (3-indolebutyric acid, IBA) were used at 1 mg/L. BAP induced branch development and flower calyx differentiation. GA3 first promoted the elongation of inflorescence rachis and then promoted flower differentiation up to the formation of normal calyx and calyptra (the fused petals), while anthers and pistils were also present but not functional. Summary The activity of allantoinase (EC 3.5.2.5) is influenced by light and darkness. The extracts of dark-grown moss protonema showed a very higher enzyme activity than the extracts of light-grown plants. The allantoinase activity was increased by light-dark and decreased by dark-light transitions. DMAP mimicked light effects by stabelizing the charakteristic light depending enzyme avctivities in the dark. The inhibitors DCMU, DNP and CCCP increased the enzyme activity of light-grown moss protonema, to some extend they induced a “physiological dark condition”.
