What makes a (ro)bot smart? : examining the antecedents of perceived intelligence in the context of using physical robots, software robots, and chatb…
2022
In recent years, the acceptance and use of intelligent robots and other kinds of intelligent systems have begun to gain more and more attention also in information systems research. Here, many studies have found the perceived intelligence of robots to act as one critical antecedent for their acceptance and use, but few studies have focused on the antecedents of perceived intelligence itself. In this study, we aimed to address this gap in prior research by examining the effects of individual intelligence dimensions on the overall intelligence perception of robots in the work context. In addition, we also examined the potential differences in these effects as well as in the individual intelli…
UAV-Assisted Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Comprehensive Survey
2021
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are usually deployed to different areas of interest to sense phenomena, process sensed data, and take actions accordingly. The networks are integrated with many advanced technologies to be able to fulfill their tasks that is becoming more and more complicated. These networks tend to connect to multimedia networks and to process huge data over long distances. Due to the limited resources of static sensor nodes, WSNs need to cooperate with mobile robots such as unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in their developments. The mobile devices show their maneuverability, computational and energy-storage abilities to support WSNs in mul…
Robomaths: Robotics to Learn Matematics in a Architecture Degree
2020
The abstract part of mathematics is a difficult matter included in many subjects in university degrees. Specifically, in architecture degrees students lack interest in this topic if they don’t experience its immediate application. In addition, technological skills are required at every educational level and the students of these degrees are usually more interested in art than in technology. With the aim of encouraging architecture students' interest in mathematics and technology, a methodology is presented here that includes the use of robotics in maths lectures. The key idea is to make the abstract part of mathematics understandable by means of robots.
Movement Detection with Event-Based Cameras: Comparison with Frame-Based Cameras in Robot Object Tracking Using Powerlink Communication
2018
Event-based cameras are not common in industrial applications despite the fact that they can add multiple advantages for applications with moving objects. In comparison with frame-based cameras, the amount of generated data is very low while keeping the main information in the scene. For an industrial environment with interconnected systems, data reduction becomes very important to avoid network congestion and provide faster response time. However, the use of new sensors as event-based cameras is not common since they do not usually provide connectivity to industrial buses. This work develops a network node based on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), including data acquisition and trac…
Viral Tweets, Fake News and Social Bots in Post-Factual Politics
2018
•PurposeIn the wake of Brexit and the 2016 US Presidential Elections, “post-factual” society has been heralded as a new era of political communications, where the digital public sphere plays a central role, in spreading “viral” contents and “fake news”, with the help of automated accounts or “social bots”. This paper seeks to define these terms and the methods by which the phenomena they commonly designate might be studied, in order to characterise the dynamics of political deliberation during the 2017 French Presidential Elections on Twitter, the online platform most commonly used for political communication in France. It thus aims to better understand the mechanisms by which information b…
Multi-agent control architecture for RFID cyberphysical robotic systems initial validation of tagged objects detection and identification using Playe…
2016
International audience; The objective of this paper is to describe and validate a multi-agent architecture proposed to control RFID Cyber-Physical Robotic Systems. This environment may contain human operators, robots (mobiles, manipulators, mobile manipulators, etc.), places (workrooms, walls, etc.) and other objects (tables, chairs, etc.). The proposed control architecture is composed of two types of agents dispatched on two levels. We find at the Organization level a Supervisory agent to allow operators to configure, manage and interact with the overall control system. At the Control level, we distinguish the Robots agents, to each robot (mobiles, manipulators or mobile manipulators) is a…

Robots responding to care needs? : A multitasking care robot pursued for 25 years, available products offer simple entertainment and instrumental ass…
2020
Twenty-five years ago, robotics guru Joseph Engelberger had a mission to motivate research teams all over the world to design the ‘Elderly Care Giver’, a multitasking personal robot assistant for everyday care needs in old age. In this article, we discuss how this vision of omnipotent care robots has influenced the design strategies of care robotics, the development of R&D initiatives and ethics research on use of care robots. Despite the expectations of robots revolutionizing care of older people, the role of robots in human care has remained marginal. The value of world trade in service robots, including care robots, is rather small. We argue that the implementation of robots in care is n…
Social Robots and Human Touch in Care : The Perceived Usefulness of Robot Assistance Among Healthcare Professionals
2019
Touching in care work is inevitable, particularly in cases where clients depend on nurses for many activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, lifting and assisting. When new technologies are involved in nurse–client relationships, the significance of human touch needs special attention. Stressing the importance of practitioners’ opinions on the usage of robots in care environments, we analyze care workers’ attitudes toward robot assistance in the care of older people and reflect on their ideas of the embodied relationship that caregivers and care receivers have with technology. To examine nurses’ attitudes toward care robots, we use survey data on professional care workers (n = …
