Motions with Emotions? : A Phenomenological Approach to Understanding the Simulated Aliveness of a Robot Body

This article examines how the interactive capabilities of companion robots, particularly their materiality and animate movements, appeal to human users and generate an image of aliveness. Building on Husserl’s phenomenological notion of a ‘double body’ and theories of emotions as affective responses, we develop a new understanding of the robots’ simulated aliveness. Analyzing empirical findings of a field study on the use of the robot Zora in care homes for older people, we suggest that the aliveness of companion robots is the result of a combination of four aspects: 1) material ingredients, 2) morphology, 3) animate movements guided by software programs and human operators as in Wizard of …
On the Stability of the Soft Pendulum With Affine Curvature: Open-Loop, Collocated Closed-Loop, and Switching Control

This letter investigates the stability properties of the soft inverted pendulum with affine curvature - a template model for nonlinear control of underactuated soft robots. We look at how changes in physical parameters affect stability and equilibrium. We give conditions under which zero dynamics corresponding to a collocated choice of the output is (locally or globally) stable or unstable. We leverage these results to design a switching controller that stabilizes a class of nonlinear equilibria of the pendulum, which can drive the system from one equilibrium to another.

Elementos de resolución de problemas en primeras edades escolares con Bee-bot

En este trabajo se presenta un estudio exploratorio sobre elementos de resolución de problemas puestos en juego por estudiantes de primeras edades escolares mientras resuelven tareas con el robot programable Bee-bot. En dichos problemas, los estudiantes deben secuenciar las instrucciones necesarias para que el robot recorra un camino desde un punto inicial a otro final. Se pretende observar y caracterizar actuaciones de tres parejas de estudiantes con el fin de determinar recursos heurísticos y procesos de gestión desarrollados durante la resolución de los problemas. Depresijas, trauksmes un stresa rādītāju izmaiņas jauniešiem pēc sarunbota lietošanas

Darba mērķis bija pētīt sarunbota lietošanas ietekmi uz depresijas, trauksmes un stresa rādītājiem. Pētījumā piedalījās neklīniska izlase – 49 sievietes (kontroles grupa n=22, eksperimentālā grupa n=27), no 18 līdz 30 gadiem. Eksperimentālā grupa divas nedēļas lietoja sarunbotu, bet kontrolgrupa ieguva informāciju, lasot pašpalīdzības materiālu. Lai noteiktu rādītājus, pirms un pēc eksperimenta dalībnieces pildīja Depresijas, trauksmes un stresa skalu DASS21 (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995, adaptācija latviešu valodā Vanags & Raščevska, 2015). This work introduces a Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol designed to allow a group of underwater robots that share a wireless communication channel to effectively communicate with each other. The goal of the Underwater Multirobot Cooperative Intervention MAC (UMCI-MAC) protocol presented in this work is to minimize the end to end delay and the jitter. The access to the medium in UMCI-MAC follows a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) strategy which is arbitrated by a master, which also has the capability to prioritize the transmission of some nodes over the rest of the network.
