Sensitivity analysis for discretized unilateral plane elasticity problem

1992

Abstract Numerical realization of optimal shape design problems requires gradient information which is used in minimization procedures. There are several possibilities for obtaining this information. Here we present a method, based on the use of the material derivative approach, applied to the finite element discretization of the problem. The advantage of this approach is that is gives the exact values of gradient and it can be very easily implemented on computers. We apply this method in the case of contact problems, where the situation is more involved compared with the case of elasticity problems with classical boundary conditions. We concentrate on a special choice of the cost functiona…

Two-Sided Guaranteed Estimates of the Cost Functional for Optimal Control Problems with Elliptic State Equations

2014

In the paper, we discuss error estimation methods for optimal control problems with distributed control functions entering the right-hand side of the corresponding elliptic state equations. Our analysis is based on a posteriori error estimates of the functional type, which were derived in the last decade for many boundary value problems. They provide guaranteed two-sided bounds of approximation errors for any conforming approximation. If they are applied to approximate solutions of state equations, then we obtain new variational formulations of optimal control problems and guaranteed bounds of the cost functional. Moreover, for problems with linear state equations this procedure leads to gu…

A fast 3D dual boundary element method based on hierarchical matrices

2008

AbstractIn this paper a fast solver for three-dimensional BEM and DBEM is developed. The technique is based on the use of hierarchical matrices for the representation of the collocation matrix and uses a preconditioned GMRES for the solution of the algebraic system of equations. The preconditioner is built exploiting the hierarchical arithmetic and taking full advantage of the hierarchical format. Special algorithms are developed to deal with crack problems within the context of DBEM. The structure of DBEM matrices has been efficiently exploited and it has been demonstrated that, since the cracks form only small parts of the whole structure, the use of hierarchical matrices can be particula…

A choice of bilevel linear programming solving parameters: factoraggregation approach

2013

Our paper deals with the problem of choosing correct parameters for the bilevel linear program- ming solving algorithm proposed by M. Sakawa and I. Nishizaki. We suggest an approach based on fac- toraggregation, which is a specially designed general aggregation operator. The idea of factoraggregation arises from factorization by the equivalence relation generated by the upper level objective function. We prove several important properties of the factorag- gregation result regarding the analysis of param- eters in order to find an optimal solution for the problem. We illustrate the proposed method with some numerical and graphical examples, in particu- lar we consider a modification of the m…

A new method for creating sparse design velocity fields

2006

We present a novel method for the computation of mesh node sensitivities with respect to the boundary node movement. The sensitivity field is sparse in a sense that movement of each boundary node affects only given amount of inner mesh nodes, which can result in considerable savings in the storage space. The method needs minimal control from the user, and it does not place any restrictions (such as block structure) on the mesh. Use of the method is demonstrated with a shape optimization problem using CAD-free parametrization. A solution to the classical die-swell free boundary problem by coupling the boundary node locations with the state variables is also presented. In that case, sparsity …

Boundary Element Crystal Plasticity Method

2017

A three-dimensional (3D) boundary element method for small strains crystal plasticity is described. The method, developed for polycrystalline aggregates, makes use of a set of boundary integral equations for modeling the individual grains, which are represented as anisotropic elasto-plastic domains. Crystal plasticity is modeled using an initial strains boundary integral approach. The integration of strongly singular volume integrals in the anisotropic elasto-plastic grain-boundary equations are discussed. Voronoi-tessellation micro-morphologies are discretized using nonstructured boundary and volume meshes. A grain-boundary incremental/iterative algorithm, with rate-dependent flow and har…

A Boundary Control Approach to an Optimal Shape Design Problem

1989

Abstract We consider the problem of controlling the coincidence set in connection with an obstacle problem. We shall transform the obtained optimal shape design problem into a boundary control problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Nash Equilibrium in a Road Network with Many Groups of Users

2019

In this chapter concentrates on the relationships between individual and group behaviour of drivers in a road network. Such relationships are established by comparing the optimal routing of drivers (system optimum of Wardrop), the competitive drivers’ groups routing (Nash equilibrium), and the selfish drivers routing (user equilibrium of Wardrop). Thus, the boundary conditions for traffic assignment in a road network were recently obtained for the first time. Wide analytical discussion on the topic as well as a survey of relevant references are presented. Moreover, a new behavioural model of traffic assignment in case of simultaneous selfish and group behaviour of drivers in a road network …

Tools and Mathematics in the Real World

2016

This chapter considers, with special regard to tool use, mathematics in out-of-school practices and attempts to replicate these practices in school mathematics. Both foci are important and problematic issues in mathematics education. This chapter has four sections. The two central sections address the two main foci. The opening section sets the scene with an historical account of ways that mathematics has been subdivided with regard to its application(s). The last section considers problem issues.
