Identities of special needs education in the discourse of Finnish professors of the field

2011

This article examines both the discourses upon which Finnish special needs education professors draw when speaking about their field, and the consequent identities for it. The research material consists of theme interviews with 10 professors of special needs education and is analysed from a socio-constructionist, discourse analytical perspective. The results show that the professors defined special needs education from two separate viewpoints: on the basis of their own personal views, or on the basis of the classical definitions of special needs education. The professors spoke about the field through five different discourses: professional, emancipatory, relativistic, autonomous and critica…

2020

The article deals with the issue of historical research on social activities. This research is a part of the field of scientific activity of Polish social pedagogy, whose creator was Helena Radlińska. This researcher has developed a method of historical research for social pedagogues. It is worthwhile to use this methodological approach in modern scientific research from social pedagogy. O humor como problema de pesquisa em Estudos da Tradução

2019

This article is an overview of translation studies applied to the case of humour, divided into four parts, plus an extensive bibliography. The first part goes over humour translation as a relevant object of research and why it is worthy of more academic attention. Humour translation should not be dealt with or looked upon as a strange body within translation studies. Part two is an overview of key contributions to the field, from Spain and elsewhere, covering a considerable number of authors and theories. Part three focuses on promising areas of interest for researchers and illustrates how audiovisual translation is a good instance of dynamism within the field, connecting all this to the ri…

Misconceptions and Ambiguities in VET: Do We Speak the Same Language?

2021

This chapter reviews some of the most extended notions used in the field of VET. Historical and comparative analysis of education run the risk to use commonplaces without proper understanding of the nuances, difficult to translate but which give different meaning to the same words. In particular, I explain these notions and their meaning and context to show the contrast among countries with different VET traditions. The main challenge is probably to consider current and historical differences between a school-based vocational education system and those where apprenticeships have been the mainstream. Academic work needs to be accurate and avoid quick and careless translation, and even manipu…

The European Union at the Copenhagen climate negotiations: A case of contested EU actorness and effectiveness

2013

This article analyses the extent of European Union (EU) actorness and effectiveness at the 15th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting in Copenhagen in December 2009. Although the EU has been characterised as a leader in international climate policy-making for some time, the COP 15 meeting in Copenhagen has overall brought about disappointing outcomes for the Union. This casts doubts on EU actorness and effectiveness in this field. We take the article by Jupille and Caporaso as a conceptual point of departure and then specify a more parsimonious actorness framework that consists of coherence and autonomy. Effectiveness is conc…

Vielfalt* lehren – sexuelle und geschlechtliche Vielfalt im Studium der Grundschulpädagogik

2021

This article takes instances of discrimination and coming out experiences of young queer people as a starting point in order to focus on the field of sexual and gender diversity at the elementary/primary school level. Thus, the author examines laws and regulations of schools and universities regarding their general implementation of sex-education, and in relation to gender and sexual diversity in particular. The article proposes an outline that recommends implementing an interdisciplinary and heteronormative critical sex-education with which gender is posited as an identity marker within a discourse around inclusion and diversity. Conceptualizing Core Aspects on Circular Economy in Cities

2021

Currently, there are many different interpretations in the literature of what a circular economy is and how it functions. As cities are still facing challenges to become fully sustainable, the need for a comprehensive analysis of how the circular economy can be implemented in urban areas is increasing. This article aims at outlining circular cities by their key characteristics and to further explore and provide a framework for fostering circularity at the city level. In order to achieve this goal, we performed a systematic review and analyzed key papers published in the field of circular economy to determine how circular economy practices form circular cities. We discovered that cities play…
