Background: West syndrome is an age-dependent epilepsy with onset peak in the first year of life whose aetiology may be symptomatic or cryptogenic. Long-term cognitive and neurological prognosis is usually poor and seizure outcome is also variable. Over the past two decades a few patients with favourable cognitive outcome and with total recovery from seizures were identified among the cryptogenic group suggesting an idiopathic aetiology. The obsession with bodily decomposition, the destruction of matter, life manifested in the images of rotting, dead bodies, vermin, brutal murders and crimes, resulting from the existence in the world of evil, are within the imagination and stylistic expression of many of Slowacki’s works. After the transfiguration of the poet these horrors of the destruction of matter do not disappear from his works, on the contrary, they are multiplied, compounded. High-temperature superconducting objects of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and Y Ba2Cu3O7 highly curved in the ab-plane, such as curved/kinked whiskers, bows and ring-like structures, were obtained within a solid?liquid?solid (SLS) grass-like growth mechanism. As-grown objects are crystals with three-dimensional epitaxy similar to conventional single crystals: they can be viewed as crystal parts ?cut? from a conventional rectangular crystal. Effects of corrosion on a steel bowstring bridge in marine environment: A case-study of assessment and retrofit

The case-study of a steel bowstring bridge set in a marine environment and highly damaged by corrosion is presented. The bridge was built in 2004 and was repainted for corrosion protection in 2010. Despite the recent construction and the maintenance interventions, many structural elements like hangers are highly damaged by corrosion with decreasing performance in terms of serviceability and ultimate limit states. A deep investigation was carried out in order to assess the bridge and to establish the necessary retrofit actions to be carried out in the near future. The construction of bridges with suspenders, such as cable-stayed or tied-arch bridges, needs deep study of the prestressing forces to be applied to stays or hangers in all stages, depending on the construction technique adopted. In these cases, the main issue is the determination of the initial forces and optimization of the prestressing system in terms of stressing values and sequence.
