Comparative electronmicroscopic studies on the central cardiac organs of cephalopods (Sepia officinalis)
1969
Beide Systeme stehen uber M…
Branch Points of Algebraic Functions and the Beginnings of Modern Knot Theory
1995
Many of the key ideas which formed modern topology grew out of “normal research” in one of the mainstream fields of 19th-century mathematical thinking, the theory of complex algebraic functions. These ideas were eventually divorced from their original context. The present study discusses an example illustrating this process. During the years 1895-1905, the Austrian mathematician, Wilhelm Wirtinger, tried to generalize Felix Klein's view of algebraic functions to the case of several variables. An investigation of the monodromy behavior of such functions in the neighborhood of singular points led to the first computation of a knot group. Modern knot theory was then formed after a shift in mat…
Approaching the precursor nuclei of the third r-process peak with RIBs
2013
The rapid neutron nucleosynthesis process involves an enormous amount of very exotic neutron-rich nuclei, which represent a theoretical and experimental challenge. Two of the main decay properties that affect the final abundance distribution the most are half-lives and neutron branching ratios. Using fragmentation of a primary $^{238}$U beam at GSI we were able to measure such properties for several neutron-rich nuclei from $^{208}$Hg to $^{218}$Pb. This contribution provides a short update on the status of the data analysis of this experiment, together with a compilation of the latest results published in this mass region, both experimental and theoretical. The impact of the uncertainties …
On coverings with special points and monodromy group a Weyl group of type B_d
2014
In this paper we study Hurwitz spaces parameterizing coverings with special points and with monodromy group a Weyl group of type Bd. We prove that such spaces are irreducible if k > 3d ? 3. Here, k denotes the number of local monodromies that are reflections relative to long roots.
Non-equivalent hyperbolic knots
2002
We construct, for each integer n 3, pairs of non-equivalent hyperbolic knots with the same 2fold and n-fold cyclic branched covers. We also discuss necessary conditions for such pairs of knots to exist. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. MSC: primary 57M25; secondary 57M12, 57M50
Rapid Access to Polyfunctional Lipids with Complex Architecture via Oxyanionic Ring-Opening Polymerization
2011
Polymer-coated liposomes, particularly poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-substituted liposomes, have emerged as long-circulating carrier systems for drug delivery and diagnostic purposes. A rapid synthesis of three different types of multifunctional lipids with structurally diverse hydrophilic, polyether-based architectures via one- or two-pot approaches is described. Architectural variation is achieved by the combination of different oxyanionic polymerization strategies and various glycidyl ether building units. Branched polyglycerol lipids have been prepared via cholesterol- or 1,2-bis-n-alkyl glyceryl ether-initiated, oxyanionic ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of protected glycidyl ethers an…
Novel Multifunctional Polymeric Photoinitiators and Photo-Coinitiators Derived from Hyperbranched Polyglycerol
2007
A new class of hyperbranched PPIs and PPCs have been prepared. The introduction of compatibilizing groups such as MEEA or trimethylacetate enhanced their solubility in radiation-curable formulations and led to an improved photoactivity compared with the corresponding MPI and MPC. Although the molecular weights of the subject PPIs and PPCs exceeded 800 g mol -1 , the viscosities of the radiation-curable formulations were still suitable for inkjet application. The combination of high photoactivity, low viscosity, and low extract-ability after curing rendered the resulting hyperbranched PPIs and PPCs attractive as components in the inkjet ink for inkjet printing, e.g., in food packaging.
Determination of concentrations in ternary and quaternary molecular gas mixtures using femtosecond Raman spectroscopy
2002
European Conference on Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy MAR 18-19, 2002 VILLIGEN, SWITZERLAND; Measurements of concentrations in gas mixtures of three and four molecular components are presented. They rely on a femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe technique based on Raman-induced polarization spectroscopy. The rotational time response of the molecular gas mixture is measured as a function of the pump-probe time delay. No selective frequency tunability is needed as the molecular rotational spectra are excited within the laser bandwidth. The results obtained from experiments performed at room temperature in N2O-CO2-N2 and N2O-CO2-O2-N2 mixtures are presented and the accuracy of the method is di…
The future of cladoceran research
1997
The cladocerans are a group of Crustacea used as model organisms in many fields of biology. In system-atics, ecology, physiology and genetics, the cladocerans appear as frequently used examples in case studies. Their reproductive system, switching between parthenogenesis and sexual reproduction, makes them particularly suited for studies dealing with genetic and environmentally induced variability. It is on the whole a particularly handy group of animals that can be used for studying almost all kinds of evolutionary processes.
Some New Symbolic Algorithms for the Computation of Generalized Asymptotes
2022
We present symbolic algorithms for computing the g-asymptotes, or generalized asymptotes, of a plane algebraic curve, C, implicitly or parametrically defined. The g-asymptotes generalize the classical concept of asymptotes of a plane algebraic curve. Both notions have been previously studied for analyzing the geometry and topology of a curve at infinity points, as well as to detect the symmetries that can occur in coordinates far from the origin. Thus, based on this research, and in order to solve practical problems in the fields of science and engineering, we present the pseudocodes and implementations of algorithms based on the Puiseux series expansion to construct the g-asymptotes of a p…
