Impact of positron emission tomography on strategy in liver resection for primary and secondary liver tumors.

Outcome of patients with metastatic disease mainly depends on accurate preoperative tumor staging. 18[F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-PET) has been proven to be a valuable diagnostic tool in a number of different tumors but its direct influence on liver surgery has not been thoroughly investigated. Between July 1999 and March 2000, 50 consecutive patients with 174 suspected liver lesions were admitted to the University Hospital Jena. l-glutamine: a major substrate for tumor cells in vivo?

From 65 human breast cancer xenografts investigated, a net glutamine uptake was found in 13 tumors (mean +/- SE: 15.7 +/- 4.5 nmol/g per min) whereas a net release (22.5 +/- 3.3 nmol/g per min) was observed in 40 tumors. In 12 tumors neither a significant net uptake nor a net release was obvious. There is experimental evidence that glutamine is taken up by cancer cells only at arterial concentrations greater than 0.5 mM. Another parameter determining glutamine utilization by tumor cells may be the tissue oxygenation. Serum interleukin-6 in patients with metastatic bone disease: correlation with cystatin C.

The clinical significance of serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and its correlation with cystatin C (Cyst C), an endogenous inhibitor of cysteine proteinase cathepsin K, was investigated by immunoassays in patients with bone metastasis from breast cancer (BCa) or prostate cancer (PCa). IL-4 protects tumor cells from anti-CD95 and chemotherapeutic agents via up-regulation of antiapoptotic proteins

Abstract We recently proposed that Th1 and Th2 cytokines exert opposite effects on the pathogenesis and clinical outcome of organ-specific autoimmunity by altering the expression of genes involved in target cell survival. Because a Th2 response against tumors is associated with poor prognosis, we investigated the ability of IL-4 to protect tumor cells from death receptor- and chemotherapy-induced apoptosis. Synthesis and antiproliferative activity of [1,2,3,5]tetrazino[5,4-a]indoles, a new class of azolo-tetrazinones.

Eight derivatives of the new ring system [1,2,3,5]tetrazino[5,4-a]indole-4-one 7, were synthesised in good yields by reaction of 2-diazoindoles with alkyl or aryl isocyanates. Compounds 7 were screened at National Cancer Institute (NCI) for their activity against a panel of approximately 60 human tumour cell lines. Some of them showed antiproliferative activity having generally GI50 in the micromolar range. The most sensitive cell lines were SF-295, SNB-75 and SF-539 of the CNS cancer sub-panel, SR of the leukaemia sub-panel, UACC-62 of the melanoma sub-panel and OVCAR-4 of the ovarian cancer sub-panel. 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
