Data flow of spectral UV measurements at Sodankylä and Jokioinen
2016
Abstract. The data flow involved in a long-term continuous solar spectral UV irradiance monitoring program is investigated and structured to provide an overall view on the multiphase process from data acquisition to the final products. The program employing Brewer spectrophotometers as measuring instruments is maintained by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) ever since the 1990s at two sites in Finland: Sodankylä (67° N) and Jokioinen (61° N). It is built upon rigorous operation routines, processing procedures, and tools for quality control (QC) and quality analysis (QA) under continuous development and evaluation. Three distinct levels of data emerge, each after certain phase in th…
Stratosphere-troposphere exchange: A review, and what we have learned from STACCATO
2003
[1] This paper provides a review of stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE), with a focus on processes in the extratropics. It also addresses the relevance of STE for tropospheric chemistry, particularly its influence on the oxidative capacity of the troposphere. After summarizing the current state of knowledge, the objectives of the project Influence of Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange in a Changing Climate on Atmospheric Transport and Oxidation Capacity (STACCATO), recently funded by the European Union, are outlined. Several papers in this Journal of Geophysical Research– Atmospheres special section present the results of this project, of which this paper gives an overview. STACCATO deve…
On the structural changes in the Brewer-Dobson circulation after 2000
2010
In this paper we present evidence that the observed increase in tropical upwelling after the year 2000 may be attributed to a change in the Brewer-Dobson circulation pattern. For this purpose, we use the concept of transit times derived from residual circulation trajectories and different in-situ measurements of ozone and nitrous dioxide. Observations from the Canadian midlatitude ozone profile record, probability density functions of in-situ N2O observations and a shift of the N2O-O3 correlation slopes, taken together, indicate that the increased upwelling in the tropics after the year 2000 appears to have triggered an in…

Liquid crystalline side chain polymers containing photoreactive azobenzene chromophores in the dark-adapted trans form and phenylbenzoate groups as co-mesogens have been prepared and investigated as monomolecular layers at the water/air interface and as multilayer assemblies deposited onto solid supports by the Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn (LBK) technique. Pressure area isotherms at variable temperatures together with reflection absorption spectra and Brewster angle microscopic pictures have been taken and analyzed (i) to derive information about the structural order and the packing properties of the mesogenic side groups within the monolayers of different homo- and co-polymeric systems and ii) t…

Within the quick nano-fabrication techniques evolution and the increasing needs in low space and energy opto-electronic functions on-chip integration, studies and control of electromagnetic resonances of sub-micrometric objects are crucial issues. One aim of this work was then to improve our knowledge of the light-matter interaction. To this end, optical near-field experiments and complementary numerical development of models have been performed to study electromagnetic resonances due to light-matter interaction in sub-micrometric resonators. As an introduction, the first part of the manuscript presents the main phenomena involved in near-field optical microscopy and the used SNOM operation…
Segregation of lipid in Ir-dye/DMPA mixed monolayers as strategy to fabricate 2D supramolecular nanostructures at the air–water interface
2008
A novel pseudospherical fluorinated iridium(III) derivative, Ir-dye/PF6, [Ir(F2-ppy)2(bpy)]PF6 (F2-ppy = 2-(2,4-difluoro)phenylpyridine, bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine), has been organized by using a lipid matrix, DMPA (dimyristoyl-phosphatidic acid), in several molar ratios at the air–water interface. The molecular organization of both components and the degree of miscibility in the different mixed films have been inferred by surface techniques such as π–A isotherms, ellipsometry, reflection spectroscopy, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and IR spectroscopy for the LB films, additionally the results have been discussed according to the additivity rule. The equimolecular Ir-dye/DMPA mixture leads to…
PLZT Electro-optic Q-switch for Er:Cr:YSGG laser
1999
Q-switching of the Er:Cr:YSGG laser at 2.79 micrometers is realized using electrooptic modulators of PLZT X/65/35 ceramics. The high (but slow as compared with single crystals) electrooptical effect in PLZT allowed to construct Q-switches with an aperture larger than 4 X 4 mm 2 , small lengths of 3 - 6 mm, with a control voltage of 1000 - 1500 V. Q-switching is realized using modulators in two modes--as a (lambda) /2 switch placed into the laser cavity at the Brewster angle avoiding reflection losses and as a (lambda) /4 switch with higher single pass losses due to Fresnel reflections. A higher laser output was obtained using (lambda) /2 switching. The obtained pulses had a halfwidth of 150…
A Simple Apparatus for the Determination of the Optical Constants and the Thickness of Absorbing Thin Films
2001
We report on a simple and inexpensive apparatus useful for measuring the optical constants n, k and the thickness of weakly absorbing thin films. The measurement is based on an accurate determination of the reflectance and transmittance of a specimen illuminated by a laser beam. The laser beam is incident on a transparent substrate coated with the film to be evaluated, with an angle of incidence equal to the Brewster angle for the substrate, and its polarization can be switched between the p and s states. If the thickness is known to be within a presumptive range, measurements of the p and s reflectance and transmittance allow a calculation of the optical constants n, k and the thickness of…
Improvement of solid state Er:YAG pulse laser performance for use in medicine
1999
The large quadratic electro-optic effect of PLZT ceramics allows to design small size modulators for the solid state infrared Er:YAG laser (lasing at (lambda) equals 2.94 micrometers - the most pronounced absorption band of water), which has found application in medicine for efficient ablation of hard and soft tissues. In the free-running mode, the Er:YAG laser emits spikes that form the pulse envelope with duration of 150 - 800 microsecond(s) . An extracavity PLZT 8.5/65/35 ceramics modulator (aperture of 4 X 6 mm2 and length of 18 mm) was used to obtain (Pi) -shaped segments with the rise and decay times less than 5 microsecond(s) . That allows to reduce considerably the fraction of the p…
Preliminary evaluation of durum wheat (Triticum Turgidum Subsp Durum) during malting process:
2018
Durum (T. turgidum subsp. durum) wheat production worldwide is substantially less than that of common wheat (Triticum aestivum) mainly due to the relatively limited end-users. In order to evaluate malting and brewing suitability, sixteen old durum wheat landraces were malted at micro scale. Results show malt quality parameters in the range 78.2–85.9% for the extract, 72.9–80.9% for the fermentability, 3–5 EBC units for the colour, 0.49–0.79% dm for water-extractable arabinoxylans and 0.043–0.059% dm for the β-glucans. Regarding wort viscosity (1.53–1.92 mPa s), we found negative correlation with endo-1,4-β-D-xylanase, positive correlation with endo-β-glucanases and soluble proteins, while n…
