Controlling diffusion of 3He by buffer gases: a structural contrast agent in lung MRI.

2006

Purpose: To study the influence of admixing inert buffer gases to laser-polarized 3 He in terms of resulting diffusion coefficients and the consequences for image contrast and resolution. Materials and Methods: The diffusion coefficient of 3 He was altered by admixing buffer gases of various molecular weights ( 4 He, N2, and SF6). The influence of the pulse sequence and the diffusion coefficient on the appearance of MRI of (laserpolarized) gases was analyzed by comparison of basic theoretical concepts with demonstrative experiments. Results: Excellent agreement between theoretical description and observed signal in simple gradient echoes was observed. A maximum signal gain can be predicted …

GekkoFS — A Temporary Burst Buffer File System for HPC Applications

2020

Many scientific fields increasingly use high-performance computing (HPC) to process and analyze massive amounts of experimental data while storage systems in today’s HPC environments have to cope with new access patterns. These patterns include many metadata operations, small I/O requests, or randomized file I/O, while general-purpose parallel file systems have been optimized for sequential shared access to large files. Burst buffer file systems create a separate file system that applications can use to store temporary data. They aggregate node-local storage available within the compute nodes or use dedicated SSD clusters and offer a peak bandwidth higher than that of the backend parallel f…

Time Characteristics of the Ion Beam Cooler-Buncher at JYFL

2001

A beam cooler for low-energy ion beams was constructed to improve the ion optical properties of radioactive ion beams produced at the IGISOL facility in Jyvaskyla. The beam cooler is a buffer gas filled RF-quadrupole. The delay properties and the possibility to accumulate a continuous IGISOL beam and release it in short bunches is discussed.

The oxidation state of iron in silicic melt at 500 MPa water pressure

2002

Abstract The dependence of the ferric–ferrous ratio in silicate melts on oxygen fugacity was studied in the system SiO2(Qz)–NaAlSi3O8(Ab)–CaAl2Si2O8(An)–H2O using Mossbauer spectroscopy. Experiments were performed under water-saturated conditions at 500 MPa, and at temperatures of 850 and 950 °C, covering a range typical for magmatic processes. The oxygen fugacity was varied in the fO2 range from Cu–Cu2O buffer to slightly more reducing conditions than the wustite–magnetite buffer. The iron redox ratio was determined by analyzing the Mossbauer parameter distribution that was modeled based on experimental spectra collected at room temperature on the quenched samples. The obtained iron redox …

Probing the self-assembly and stability of oligohistidine based rod-like micelles by aggregation induced luminescence.

2016

OA hybrid The synthesis and self-assembly of a new C2-symmetric oligohistidine amphiphile equipped with an aggregation induced emission luminophore is reported. We observe the formation of highly stable and ordered rod-like micelles in phosphate buffered saline, with a critical aggregation concentration below 200 nM. Aggregation induced emission of the luminophore confirms the high stability of the anisotropic assemblies in serum.

Bioanalytical system for detection of cancer cells with photoluminescent ZnO nanorods

2016

Using photoluminescent ZnO nanorods and carbohydrate marker SSEA-4, a novel cancer cell recognition system was developed. Immobilization of SSEA-4 antibodies (αSSEA-4) on ZnO nanorods was performed in buffer solution (pH = 7.1) over 2 h. The cancer cell line probes were fixed on the glass slide. One hundred microliters of ZnO-αSSEA-4 conjugates were deposited on the cell probe and exposed for 30 min. After washing photoluminescence spectra were recorded. Based on the developed methodology, ZnO-αSSEA-4 probes were tested on patient-derived breast and colorectal carcinoma cells. Our data clearly show that the carbohydrate SSEA-4 molecule is expressed on cancer cell lines and patient-derived c…

Synthesis and in vitro studies on a potential dopamine prodrug.

2008

Dopamine delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) undergoes the permeability limitations of blood-brain barrier (BBB) which is a selective interface that excludes most water-soluble molecules from entering the brain. Neutral amino acids permeate the BBB by specific transport systems. Conden- sation of dopamine with neutral amino acids could afford potential prodrugs able to interact with the BBB endogenous transporters and easily enter the brain. The synthesis and characterization of the dopamine derivative 2-amino-N-[2-(3,4-dihydroxy-phenyl)-ethyl]-3-phenyl-propionamide (7) is de- scribed. The chemical and enzymatic stability of 7 was evaluated. The molecular weight (300 Da) and Log P …

The LepR-mediated leptin transport across brain barriers controls food reward

2018

Objective Leptin is a key hormone in the control of appetite and body weight. Predominantly produced by white adipose tissue, it acts on the brain to inhibit homeostatic feeding and food reward. Leptin has free access to circumventricular organs, such as the median eminence, but entry into other brain centers is restricted by the blood–brain and blood–CSF barriers. So far, it is unknown for which of its central effects leptin has to penetrate brain barriers. In addition, the mechanisms mediating the transport across barriers are unclear although high expression in brain barriers suggests an important role of the leptin receptor (LepR). Methods We selectively deleted LepR in brain endothelia…

Emotional labour and work engagement among nurses: examining perceived compassion, leadership and work ethic as stress buffers

2015

Aim The study examined whether three resources, that is, compassion, transformational leadership and work ethic feasibility, buffer against the negative effects of emotional labour on work engagement. Background Emotional labour is a common job stressor among nurses, but little is known about whether certain personal and work resources buffer against it in relation to work engagement. Revealing buffers of emotional labour would help organizations to design tailored interventions. Design Cross-sectional online survey conducted in 2014. Methods Participants were 3466 Finnish nurses. Hypotheses were tested via hierarchical moderated regression analyses. Results Higher emotional labour related …
