Identification of passive layers on Co in Alkaline solutions by photocurrent spectroscopy

2005

The photoelectrochemical behavior of passive films on Co has been studied as a function of the polarizing voltage and electrolyte composition. Passive layers formed at 0 V (standard hydrogen electrode, SHE) in 0.1 M NaOH consisted of Co(OH) 2 , whose bandgap value has been found to be 1.85 eV. Higher bandgap values (2.75 eV) have been measured for passive films formed in borate buffer at 0 V (SHE), which are mainly consist of CoO. The Eg values have been related to the film composition on the basis of a correlation between the bandgap of passive films and the electronegativity of their constituents.

Job Insecurity and Depressive Symptoms in Mothers and Adolescents: A Dyadic Study

2021

AbstractIn this study, we examined whether maternal perceived job insecurity (JI) affected depressive symptoms in their adolescent children. Specifically, we tested a mediator-moderator model in which we hypothesized that maternal JI was related to adolescent depressive symptoms indirectly via maternal depressive symptoms. Most importantly, we also explored whether this indirect path was moderated by two buffering resources, i.e., maternal off-job recovery and adolescent self-esteem. There is little research on the effects of parental JI on adolescent children from the viewpoint of buffering moderators. Due to growing insecurity in the labor markets we need more information about resources …

GekkoFS - A Temporary Distributed File System for HPC Applications

2018

We present GekkoFS, a temporary, highly-scalable burst buffer file system which has been specifically optimized for new access patterns of data-intensive High-Performance Computing (HPC) applications. The file system provides relaxed POSIX semantics, only offering features which are actually required by most (not all) applications. It is able to provide scalable I/O performance and reaches millions of metadata operations already for a small number of nodes, significantly outperforming the capabilities of general-purpose parallel file systems. The work has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) through the ADA-FS project as part of the Priority Programme 1648. It is also support…

The effect of buffer strip width and selective logging on streamside polypore communities

2020

Preserving streamside forest habitats or buffer strips is considered to reduce forestry-related biodiversity loss in commercial forest landscapes. However, it is still unclear what type of management in and near streamside forests can be undertaken without compromising their biodiversity and natural change through succession. Using a before–after, control–impact study design, we tested the impacts of forested buffer strips (15 or 30 m wide, with or without selective logging), preserved after clear-cutting, on the changes of polypore communities in streamside boreal forests in Finland. Manipulations in 28 sites produced four treatment classes, the community compositions of which were compar…

Study of optical and magneto processes in Rb atomic vapor layer of nanometric thickness

2012

Using a narrow-band resonant fluorescence spectra from a nano-cell with a thickness of L= [lambda]/2, and VSOP resonances formed at a thickness L =[lambda] ([lambda] is the wavelength of the resonant radiation), for the first time it was experimentally investigated the behaviour of the frequency and intensity (transition probabilities) of the atomic hyperfine structure transitions between the 85Rb, 87Rb, D1 and D2 lines Zeeman sublevels in external magnetic fields in range 5 - 7000G. The behaviour of tens of previously unstudied atomic transitions was analyzed and it is demonstrated that the intensities of these lines can both greatly increase, and decrease (tenfold). For the first time it …

Barrier effects on the spatial distribution of Xylella fastidiosa in Alicante, Spain

2021

AbstractSpatial models often assume isotropy and stationarity, implying that spatial dependence is direction invariant and uniform throughout the study area. However, these assumptions are violated when dispersal barriers are present in the form of geographical features or disease control interventions. Despite this, the issue of non-stationarity has been little explored in the context of plant health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different barriers in the distribution of the quarantine plant pathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa in the demarcated area in Alicante, Spain. Occurrence data from the official surveys in 2018 were analyzed with four spatial Baye…

Amphiphilic poly(hydroxyethylaspartamide) derivative-based micelles as drug delivery systems for ferulic acid

2008

Self-assembling micelles, potentially useful as drug delivery systems for ferulic acid (FA), were obtained in aqueous media from amphiphilic alpha,beta-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) copolymers bearing at the polyamino acidic backbone both poly(ethyleneglycol) (2000 or 5000 Da) and hexadecylamine (C(16)) moieties, at a concentration of 7 x 10(- 3) and 4 x 10(- 3) g/l, respectively, with nanometre size and negative zeta potential. These micelles were able to entrap FA and to release it in a prolonged way in phosphate buffer solution at pH 7.4 and human plasma. These systems were also stable in storage conditions and have no cytotoxic effects on Caco-2, 16 HBE, HuDe and K562 cel…

New centrality in UNESCO buffer-zones: two Mediterranean case studies. Per una nuova centralità delle buffer-zones UNESCO: due casi studio nel Medite…

2022

The paper presents an interdisciplinary reflection on the potential for sustainable development of communities and their cultural landscapes expressed by UNESCO Buffer Zones in the Mediterranean, with the intention of transforming their widespread perception as mere tools of protection and urban planning into concrete integrated proposals for protection and enhancement, and also taking into account the role of museums in promoting the understanding of cultural heritage and the maturation of an awareness of the value of such actions. With reference to the 2004 guidelines UNESCO and starting from the evaluation of some management plans, such as that of the Arab-Norman itinerary in Palermo and…

Dependence of plasma pH on oxygen saturation

1969

Abstract The influence of haemoglobin oxygenation on the pH value of the blood plasma of healthy adolescents was investigated at 38°C by varying the parameters CO2 pressure, Hb concentration and buffer bases. A total of 5000 measurements gave the following results: 1. 1. The pHs difference between oxygenated and deoxygenated blood increases with diminishing CO2 pressure and with increasing Hb concentration. There is a linear relation between the pHs changes and the O2 saturation of the haemoglobin. 2. 2. Quantitatively these relationships can be expressed by the following equation: δpHs = (8 − pH ox − log 0.03 Pco 2 ) · [Hb] 225 · (100 − So 2 100 where ΔpHs is the pHs difference between par…

Imaging magnetic scalar potentials by laser-induced fluorescence from bright and dark atoms

2014

We present a spectroscopic method for mapping two-dimensional distributions of magnetic field strengths (magnetic scalar potential lines) using charge-coupled device (CCD) recordings of the fluorescence patterns emitted by spin-polarized Cs vapour in a buffer gas exposed to inhomogeneous magnetic fields. The method relies on the position-selective destruction of spin polarization by magnetic resonances induced by multi-component oscillating magnetic fields, such that magnetic potential lines can be directly detected by the CCD camera. We also present a generic algebraic model allowing for the calculation of the fluorescence patterns and find excellent agreement with the experimental observa…
