The prognostic value of sentinel lymph node micrometastases in patients with invasive breast carcinoma

2016

The prognostic value of sentinel lymph node micrometastases in invasive breast cancer patients is still widely debated. Even if, in the absence of unequivocal guidelines, the axillary lynphadenectomy is not still performed in the routine clinical care of these patients. We have retrospectively analyzed 746 patients with operable invasive breast cancer and clinically negative axillary lymph nodes. These patients underwent conservative surgery or total mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. Patients with micrometastases in the sentinel lymph node treated with axillary dissection has been checked and the involvement of the remaining lymph nodes analyzed. Patients with micrometastases in th…

p95HER-2 Predicts Worse Outcome in Patients with HER-2-Positive Breast Cancer

2006

AbstractBackground: The HER-2 receptor undergoes a proteolytic cleavage generating an NH2-terminally truncated fragment, p95HER-2, that is membrane-associated and tyrosine-phosphorylated. We have reported that p95HER-2, but not the full-length receptor, p185HER-2, correlated with the extent of lymph node involvement in patients with breast cancer and its expression was significantly enhanced in nodal metastatic tissue. These facts suggested an important role for p95HER-2 either as a marker or cause of metastasis and poor outcome in breast cancer. In this work, we have studied the prognostic value of p95HER-2 in breast cancer. Methods: Primary breast tumor tissues (n = 483) were from surgical…

Autoantibodies in breast cancer: their use as an aid to early diagnosis

2007

There is increasing evidence that the immune system produces a humoral response to cancer-derived antigens. This study assessed the diagnostic potential of autoantibodies to multiple known tumour-associated proteins.Sera from normal controls (n = 94), primary breast cancer patients (n = 97) and patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) (n = 40) were investigated for the presence of autoantibodies to p53, c-myc, HER2, NY-ESO-1, BRCA1, BRCA2 and MUC1 antigens by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Reproducibly elevated levels of autoantibodies were seen in at least one of the six antigens in 64% of primary breast cancer patient sera and 45% of patients with DCIS at a specificity of 85%. No …

Intratumoral Haemorrhage Causing an Unusual Clinical Presentation of a Vestibular Schwannoma

2012

We present a case of an elderly woman with no history of audiological disease with sudden onset of visual and hearing deficits associated with systemic clinical signs. On examination she had impairment of right CNs from V to X. CT and MR imaging demonstrated a cystic vestibular schwannoma with a rare intralesional fluid-fluid level correlated to a recent bleed. We include high quality MR images to show the acute impairment of the cranial nerves next to the tumour after acute bleeding. Our case report includes a voxel-based morphometry (VMB) analysis of the tumour that, as far as we know, has never been done before for such a tumour. VBM analysis was performed to calculate the hypothesized …

Imunohistochemical Demonstration of Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) in 120 Mammary Carcinomas and its Correlation with Tumor Type, Grading, Staging Pl…

1985

Antisera to CEA were used for the immunohistochemical localization and quantification of this antigen in 120 Bouin-fixed, paraffin embedded mammary carcinomas. These results were compared to tumor type, grading, staging, biochemical receptor status, cytosolic CEA-levels of the same tumors, and preoperative plasma CEA-levels. Mammary carcinomas were usually characterized by a low percentage of CEA-positive tumor cells: 50.9% of the cases contained more than 5% CEA-positive tumor cells and were therefore defined as being CEA-histopositive in this study. A relation could be shown between CEA-histopositivity and the histologic tumor type. The majority of invasive lobular carcinomas, tubular, an…

Normative data on the familiarity and difficulty of 196 Spanish word fragments

2005

In this article, normative data on the familiarity and difficulty of 196 single-solution Spanish word fragments are presented. The database includes the following indices: difficulty, familiarity, frequency, number of meanings, number of letters given in the fragment, first and/or last letters given, and ratio of letters to blanks. A factor analysis was performed on difficulty, and two factors were obtained. Frequency, familiarity, and number of meanings loaded highly on the first factor, which we consider to measure lexical processes, whereas number of letters in the fragment, first and/or last letters given, and ratio of letters to blanks loaded highly on the second factor, which we judge…

Understanding metaphors and idioms: A single-case neuropsychological study in a person with Down syndrome

2001

The ability of subject F.F., diagnosed with Down syndrome, to appreciate nonliteral (interpreting metaphors and idioms) and literal (vocabulary knowledge, including highly specific and unusual items) aspects of language was investigated. F.F. was impaired in understanding both metaphors and idioms, while her phonological, syntactic and lexical–semantic skills were largely preserved. By contrast, some aspects of F.F.'s executive functions and many visuospatial abilities were defective. The suggestion is made that the interpretation of metaphors and idioms is largely independent of that of literal language, preserved in F.F., and that some executive aspects of working memory and visuospatial …

Increase in Nocturnal Blood Pressure and Progression to Microalbuminuria in Type 1 Diabetes

2002

Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and microalbuminuria often have elevated blood pressure while they are asleep, but it is not known whether the elevation develops concomitantly with microalbuminuria or precedes it.We monitored 75 adolescents and young adults who had had type 1 diabetes with normal urinary albumin excretion and blood pressure for more than five years. Ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring was used to assess blood pressure at the initial evaluation and about two years later, at which time all subjects had normal urinary albumin excretion. Subsequently, subjects were monitored for the development of microalbuminuria.Microalbuminuria developed in 14 subjects, whereas the o…

The accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the treatment of multicentric invasive breast cancer using a subareolar injection of tracer.

2008

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and the accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in multicentric breast cancer (MBC) performed by means of a subareolar (SA) injection of both 99Tc-labeled human albumin colloid and lymphazurin. METHODS: Between January 2002 and October 2007, 34 patients with MBC with clinically negative axilla underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) followed by total axillary node dissection (AD). Overall successful identification rate of SLN was 100%; there were no false negatives and overall accuracy rate was 100%. RESULTS: The mean number of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) identified was 1.8 +/- 0.88 (range = 1-4); the mean number of axilla…
