Effects of UV radiation on the vertical distribution of vendace [Coregonus albula (L.)] larvae in Finnish lakes

2005

– Positively phototactic vendace larvae may be vulnerable to enhanced springtime UV levels unless they are able to avoid them. Experimental results, however, suggested that UV avoidance can exist. In this study field data from eight Finnish lakes with different characteristics were analysed. The aim of the study was to determine whether vendace larvae stayed deeper in the water column during sunny than during cloudy periods because thick cloud cover considerably reduces UV irradiance. In addition, avoidance behaviour of larvae was studied in acrylic tubes placed in a lake and under laboratory conditions. The avoidance of high UV-B exposure existed both in the littoral and pelagic zone of th…

Features of intercohort cannibalism of Vendace (Coregonus albula(L.)) under laboratory conditions

2012

Cannibalism in Vendace (Coregonus albula (L.)) was studied under laboratory conditions by exposing Vendace eggs (100) or newly hatched larvae (20) to an older individual in aquaria. Predation on the eggs was not detected whereas both biting and ingesting of newly hatched larvae were observed in 23% of older Vendace individuals. Small individuals (<100 mm in total length) were significantly more likely to attack larvae than larger individuals. Differences were also found in attack rates between individuals. The rate ranged from no attacks to attacks towards every larva exposed to the cannibalistic individual. These results confirm that intercohort cannibalism is neither an exceptional nor a …

Unpredictability of fish recruitment: interannual variation in young-of-the-year abundance

2000

In 1989-1998, vendace larvae Coregonus albula were sampled in Finnish lakes following a stratified random sampling design. The abundance of young-of-the-year vendace after the first growing season was estimated using catch-per-unit-effort statistics. The number or total area of nursery places hardly limited the recruitment of vendace in the study lakes. The major proportion of prerecruit mortality of vendace occurred in the larval phase and larval sampling produced significant information on young-of-the-year survival. Although larval abundances and recruitment were clearly associated only in Lake Onkamo, generally high larval abundance was needed to produce high number of recruits.

Recurrent angioedema and the threat of asphyxiation.

2009

Angioedema (also known as Quincke disease) is the name given to edema lasting 1–7 days that recurs at irregular intervals. Target organs are the skin, tongue, glottis and larynx, gastrointestinal tract, and sometimes other soft organs. The clinical symptom referred to as angioedema forms part of a variety of disease entities (Box 1, Figure 1). In Germany, according to the present author’s estimate, several thousand patients suffer from one of the forms of recurrent angioedema. Cases of sudden asphyxiation are rare, but do occur every now and again (1). This review aims to draw attention to the various clinical features of recurrent angioedema and the practical steps for dealing with it, and…

A chapter of the European fortune of Poggio Bracciolini’s «Liber facetiarum» concerns the re-elaborations…

Immunohistochemical expression and distribution of orexin, orphanin and leptin in the major salivary glands of some mammals

2012

Abstract: The aim of the study was to assess the involvement of apoptotic factors, cytokeratins and metalloproteinase- 9 in the histogenesis of both Epithelialized Gingival Lesions (EGL) and Periapical Lesions (PAL). 55 consecutive patients, 30 with PAL and 25 with EGL, were selected for the study after clinical and radiological examinations. The PAL patients had severe periapical lesions and tooth decay with exposure of the pulp chamber. All PAL and EGL biopsies were surgically extracted, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and processed for routine light microscopy. Ten biopsies of each category were processed for immunohistochemistry (IHC). Serial paraffin sections were stained by IHC with a…

Riflessioni su D. 50.16.130 (Ulp. 2 ad leg. Iul. et Pap.)

2013

The research focuses on analysis of a well-known fragment of Justinian’s Digesta: 50.16.130 (Ulp. 2 ad leg. Iul. et Pap.). Formerly, several scholars have raised many doubts regard to its authenticity. The author’s basic idea is that there are not solid issues in favor of the hypothesis that the fragment is not genuine. On the contrary, both the examination of the terminology, used in the fragment, and the comparison between D. 50.16.130 and other sources (in particular: D. 38.16.1 pr.; 5.3.1 e 3; Tit. Ulp. 11.2-3; 11.14) might provide interesting evidences in support of its classical content.

The role of the frequency of constituents in compound words: evidence from Basque and Spanish.

2008

Recent data from compound word processing suggests that compounds are recognized via their constituent lexemes (Juhasz, Starr, Inhoff, & Placke, 2003). The present lexical decision experiment manipulated orthogonally the frequency of the constituents of compound words in two languages: Basque and Spanish. Basque and Spanish diverge widely in their morphological properties and in the number of existing compound words. Furthermore, the head lexeme (i.e., the most meaningful lexeme related to the whole-word meaning) in Spanish tends to be the second lexeme, whereas in Basque the percentage is more distributed. Results showed a facilitative effect of the frequency of the second lexeme, in both …

Design, development and validation of a system for automatic help to medical text understanding

2020

Abstract Objective The paper presents a web-based application, SIMPLE, that facilitates medical text comprehension by identifying the health-related terms of a medical text and providing the corresponding consumer terms and explanations. Background The comprehension of a medical text is often a difficult task for laypeople because it requires semantic abilities that can differ from a person to another, depending on his/her health-literacy level. Some systems have been developed for facilitating the comprehension of medical texts through text simplification, either syntactical or lexical. The ones dealing with lexical simplification usually replace the original text and do not provide additi…
