Plug plant fertilization and planting density affect onion productivity in sicily

2009

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different planting density and different levels of plug plant fertilization on onion production in Sicily. Onion landrace ‘Bisacquino’ was sown in the first week of January 2006 in a unheated greenhouse in polystyrene plug trays. Seedlings were fertigated with the following three different solutions containing (in mg l-1) 800 N - 400 P - 400 K, 1200 N - 600 P - 600 K or 1600 N- 800 P - 800 K. Trays were subirrigated with the nutrient solution both at one leaf stage and 10 days prior transplanting. Plug plants were field transplanted in the Sicilian hilly countryside. The plugs consisting of one, two, or three onion plants were set 20 cm a…

Light transmission of the human lens and its relation with aging

2011

Purpose To determine the visible light transmission of the human crystalline lens of persons of different ages, using both solar and incandescent illumination. Methods The spectral transmission of lens was measured by using the Perkin-Elmer 800 UV/VIS spectrophotometer. With these data we calculated the percentage of visible light transmission for solar illumination, simulated by the CIE D65 illuminant, and for incandescent illumination (A illuminant). Results The total amount of visible light transmitted by nine crystalline lenses is represented as a function of age: with solar illumination and with incandescent illumination and the comparison between both illuminants. In general, the amoun…

Age‐induced change in the color of the human crystalline lens

2011

Purpose To determine the chromatic coordinates of different human crystalline lenses to analyze the age-induced change in the color of the crystalline. Methods The spectral transmission of nine human crystalline lenses of different ages were measured by using a Perkin-Elmer 800 UV/VIS spectrophotometer. Using these data we calculated the chromatic coordinates of each crystalline lens for both solar and incandescent illumination. The study adheres to the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki for Research Including Human Subjects and was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Results The results show a greater saturation of color with the increase of age. In principle, the change tends t…

PSA-NCAM is expressed in immature, but not recently generated, neurons in the adult cat cerebral cortex layer II

2011

Neuronal production persists during adulthood in the dentate gyrus and the olfactory bulb, where substantial numbers of immature neurons can be found. These cells can also be found in the paleocortex layer II of adult rodents, but in this case most of them have been generated during embryogenesis. Recent reports have described the presence of similar cells, with a wider distribution, in the cerebral cortex of adult cats and primates and have suggested that they may develop into interneurons. The objective of this study is to verify this hypothesis and to explore the origin of these immature neurons in adult cats. We have analyzed their distribution using immunohistochemical analysis of the …

Quinones and Benzophenones from the Medicinal Plants of Africa

2013

In this chapter, we discuss the chemistry of quinones and benzophenones: classification, nomenclature, biosynthesis, biological activity, and their distribution in nature. Genera such as Newbouldia, Kigelia, Aloe, Euclea, Diospyros, Bulbine, Rumex, and Kniphofia are rich sources of quinines, while the Guttiferae are rich in polyprenylated benzophenones. Most of these African species offer novel derivatives with interesting biological activities, suggesting that these species are potential sources of new drug candidates if properly investigated.

Light transmission and ultraviolet protection of contact lenses under artificial illumination

2016

Purpose: To determine the spectral transmission of contact lenses (CLs), with and without an ultraviolet (UV) filter to evaluate their capacity for protection under UV radiation from artificial illumination (incandescent, fluorescent, xenon (Xe) lamps, or white LEDs (light-emitting diode)). Methods: The transmission curves of nine soft CLs were obtained by using a PerkinElmer Lambda 35 UV-vis spectrophotometer. A CIE standard was used for the emission spectra of incandescent and fluorescent lamps, and Xe lamps and white LEDs were measured by using an International Light Technologies ILT-950 spectroradiometer. Results: Five of the nine soft CLs analysed state that they incorporate UV filters…

Neurovascular EGFL7 regulates adult neurogenesis in the subventricular zone and thereby affects olfactory perception

2016

Adult neural stem cells reside in a specialized niche in the subventricular zone (SVZ). Throughout life they give rise to adult-born neurons in the olfactory bulb (OB), thus contributing to neural plasticity and pattern discrimination. Here, we show that the neurovascular protein EGFL7 is secreted by endothelial cells and neural stem cells (NSCs) of the SVZ to shape the vascular stem-cell niche. Loss of EGFL7 causes an accumulation of activated NSCs, which display enhanced activity and re-entry into the cell cycle. EGFL7 pushes activated NSCs towards quiescence and neuronal progeny towards differentiation. This is achieved by promoting Dll4-induced Notch signalling at the blood vessel-stem …

A moderate diet restriction during pregnancy alters the levels of endocannabinoids and endocannabinoid-related lipids in the hypothalamus, hippocampu…

2017

Existe para su consulta material suplementario aportado por el editor. Undernutrition during pregnancy has been associated to increased vulnerability to develop metabolic and behavior alterations later in life. The endocannabinoid system might play an important role in these processes. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a moderate maternal calorie-restricted diet on the levels of the endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG), arachidonic acid (AA) and the N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) anandamide (AEA), oleoylethanolamide (OEA) and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) in the brain of newborn rat offspring. We focused on brain structures involved in metabolism, feeding behavior, as well as em…

Dynamic Changes in Ultrastructure of the Primary Cilium in Migrating Neuroblasts in the Postnatal Brain

2019

New neurons, referred to as neuroblasts, are continuously generated in the ventricular-subventricular zone of the brain throughout an animal's life. These neuroblasts are characterized by their unique potential for proliferation, formation of chain-like cell aggregates, and long-distance and high-speed migration through the rostral migratory stream (RMS) toward the olfactory bulb (OB), where they decelerate and differentiate into mature interneurons. The dynamic changes of ultrastructural features in postnatal-born neuroblasts during migration are not yet fully understood. Here we report the presence of a primary cilium, and its ultrastructural morphology and spatiotemporal dynamics, in mig…

Detachment of Chain-Forming Neuroblasts by Fyn-Mediated Control of cell–cell Adhesion in the Postnatal Brain

2018

In the rodent olfactory system, neuroblasts produced in the ventricular-subventricular zone of the postnatal brain migrate tangentially in chain-like cell aggregates toward the olfactory bulb (OB) through the rostral migratory stream (RMS). After reaching the OB, the chains are dissociated and the neuroblasts migrate individually and radially toward their final destination. The cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling cell–cell adhesion during this detachment remain unclear. Here we report that Fyn, a nonreceptor tyrosine kinase, regulates the detachment of neuroblasts from chains in the male and female mouse OB. By performing chemical screening andin vivoloss-of-function and gain-of-f…
