Glass fibre strength distribution determined by common experimental methods

2002

The tensile strength of brittle fibres is routinely described by the Weibull distribution. The parameters of the distribution can be obtained from tests on single fibres and fibre bundles or from model composite tests. However, there is growing evidence that the distribution parameters obtained by different experimental techniques differ systematically. In order to investigate the possible causes of such discrepancies, single-fibre tension, fibre bundle, and single-fibre fragmentation tests are employed in this study to obtain strength distribution of commercial E-glass fibres. The results reveal parameter dependence on the approach used to extract the distribution parameters from experimen…

Branch-and-Bound

2010

We now turn to the discussion of how to solve the linear ordering problem to (proven) optimality. In this chapter we start with the branch-and-bound method which is a general procedure for solving combinatorial optimization problems. In the subsequent chapters this approach will be realized in a special way leading to the so-called branch-and-cut method. There are further possibilities for solving the LOP exactly, e.g. by formulating it as dynamic program or as quadratic assignment problem, but these approaches did not lead to the implementation of practical algorithms and we will not elaborate on them here.

Symmetric locally free resolutions and rationality problems

2022

We show that the birationality class of a quadric surface bundle over $\mathbb{P}^2$ is determined by its associated cokernel sheaves. As an application, we discuss stable-rationality of very general quadric bundles over $\mathbb{P}^2$ with discriminant curves of fixed degree. In particular, we construct explicit models of these bundles for some discriminant data. Among others, we obtain various birational models of a nodal Gushel-Mukai fourfold, as well as of a cubic fourfold containing a plane. Finally, we prove stable irrationality of several types of quadric surface bundles.

On a question of Mehta and Pauly

2013

In this short note we provide explicit examples in characteristic $p$ on certain smooth projective curves where for a given semistable vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ the length of the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $F^\ast \mathcal{E}$ is longer than $p$. This answers a question of Mehta and Pauly raised in arXiv:math/0607565.

An index formula on manifolds with fibered cusp ends

2002

We consider a compact manifold whose boundary is a locally trivial fiber bundle and an associated pseudodifferential algebra that models fibered cusps at infinity. Using trace-like functionals that generate the 0-dimensional Hochschild cohomology groups, we express the index of a fully elliptic fibered cusp operator as the sum of a local contribution from the interior and a term that comes from the boundary. This answers the index problem formulated by Mazzeo and Melrose. We give a more precise answer in the case where the base of the boundary fiber bundle is the circle. In particular, for Dirac operators associated to a "product fibered cusp metric", the index is given by the integral of t…

Quillen superconnections and connections on supermanifolds

2013

Given a supervector bundle $E = E_0\oplus E_1 \to M$, we exhibit a parametrization of Quillen superconnections on $E$ by graded connections on the Cartan-Koszul supermanifold $(M;\Omega (M))$. The relation between the curvatures of both kind of connections, and their associated Chern classes, is discussed in detail. In particular, we find that Chern classes for graded vector bundles on split supermanifolds can be computed through the associated Quillen superconnections.

The X-Ray Transform for Connections in Negative Curvature

2016

We consider integral geometry inverse problems for unitary connections and skew-Hermitian Higgs fields on manifolds with negative sectional curvature. The results apply to manifolds in any dimension, with or without boundary, and also in the presence of trapped geodesics. In the boundary case, we show injectivity of the attenuated ray transform on tensor fields with values in a Hermitian bundle (i.e. vector valued case). We also show that a connection and Higgs field on a Hermitian bundle are determined up to gauge by the knowledge of the parallel transport between boundary points along all possible geodesics. The main tools are an energy identity, the Pestov identity with a unitary connect…

On the stability of flat complex vector bundles over parallelizable manifolds

2017

We investigate the flat holomorphic vector bundles over compact complex parallelizable manifolds $G / \Gamma$, where $G$ is a complex connected Lie group and $\Gamma$ is a cocompact lattice in it. The main result proved here is a structure theorem for flat holomorphic vector bundles $E_\rho$ associated to any irreducible representation $\rho : \Gamma \rightarrow \text{GL}(r,{\mathbb C})$. More precisely, we prove that $E_{\rho}$ is holomorphically isomorphic to a vector bundle of the form $E^{\oplus n}$, where $E$ is a stable vector bundle. All the rational Chern classes of $E$ vanish, in particular, its degree is zero. We deduce a stability result for flat holomorphic vector bundles $E_{\r…

Manifolds with vectorial torsion

2015

Abstract The present note deals with the properties of metric connections ∇ with vectorial torsion V on semi-Riemannian manifolds ( M n , g ) . We show that the ∇-curvature is symmetric if and only if V ♭ is closed, and that V ⊥ then defines an ( n − 1 ) -dimensional integrable distribution on M n . If the vector field V is exact, we show that the V-curvature coincides up to global rescaling with the Riemannian curvature of a conformally equivalent metric. We prove that it is possible to construct connections with vectorial torsion on warped products of arbitrary dimension matching a given Riemannian or Lorentzian curvature—for example, a V-Ricci-flat connection with vectorial torsion in di…

The metric-valued Lebesgue differentiation theorem in measure spaces and its applications

2021

We prove a version of the Lebesgue Differentiation Theorem for mappings that are defined on a measure space and take values into a metric space, with respect to the differentiation basis induced by a von Neumann lifting. As a consequence, we obtain a lifting theorem for the space of sections of a measurable Banach bundle and a disintegration theorem for vector measures whose target is a Banach space with the Radon-Nikod\'{y}m property.
