Multiple independent variants at the TERT locus are associated with telomere length and risks of breast and ovarian cancer

2013

Journal article TERT-locus SNPs and leukocyte telomere measures are reportedly associated with risks of multiple cancers. Using the Illumina custom genotyping array iCOGs, we analyzed ~480 SNPs at the TERT locus in breast (n = 103,991), ovarian (n = 39,774) and BRCA1 mutation carrier (n = 11,705) cancer cases and controls. Leukocyte telomere measurements were also available for 53,724 participants. Most associations cluster into three independent peaks. The minor allele at the peak 1 SNP rs2736108 associates with longer telomeres (P = 5.8 × 10!-7), lower risks for estrogen receptor (ER)-negative (P = 1.0 × 10!-8) and BRCA1 mutation carrier (P = 1.1 × 10!-5) breast cancers and altered promot…

Development, validation and implementation of a program to detect malnutrition with NRS-2002 screening tool in patients from the oncology and hematol…

2021

Introduction: Hospital malnutrition (HM) is an increasingly prevalent situation, which involves both an increase in health costs, and also a decrease in the life quality and greater morbimortality. Nutritional screening is essential to detect malnutrition early and avoid these complications. Objectives: To develop, validate and implement the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS-2002) tool at the admission and during the hospitalization of a patient in the oncohematology service in a third level hospital, and know their nutritional status at the admission and the discharge. Methods: NRS-2002 was performed on all patients admitted to the oncohaematology service, followed by the complete nutri…

A Mumford-Shah functional based variational model with contour, shape, and probability prior information for prostate segmentation

2012

Abstract: Inter patient shape, size and intensity variations of the prostate in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images challenge automatic segmentation of the prostate. In this paper we propose a variational model driven by Mumford-Shah (MS) functional for segmenting the prostate. Parametric representation of the implicit curve is derived from principal component analysis (PCA) of the signed distance representation of the labeled training data to impose shape prior. Posterior probability of the prostate region determined from random forest classification facilitates initialization and propagation of our model in a MS energy minimization framework. The proposed method achieves mean Dice simila…

Thyroid papillary carcinoma infarction after fine needle aspiration

1994

Complications following fine needle aspiration (FNA) are very infrequent and generally resolve spontaneously without treatment. The appearance of necrosis or infarction after FNA of the thyroid gland is an exceptional finding. An 83-year-old woman with a thyroid nodule was subjected to diagnostic FNA using a G23 needle. The patient noted a decrease in nodule size after FNA. A total thyroidectomy was performed 36 days after FNA. The cytological diagnosis was papillary carcinoma. Histology revealed massive coagulation necrosis affecting 80% of the tumor mass; the cytological diagnosis was confirmed. Iron pigment deposits were observed in the vicinity of the necrotic areas together with inters…

No Difference in Penetrance between Truncating and Missense/Aberrant Splicing Pathogenic Variants in MLH1 and MSH2: A Prospective Lynch Syndrome Data…

2021

Background. Lynch syndrome is the most common genetic predisposition for hereditary cancer. Carriers of pathogenic changes in mismatch repair (MMR) genes have an increased risk of developing colorectal (CRC), endometrial, ovarian, urinary tract, prostate, and other cancers, depending on which gene is malfunctioning. In Lynch syndrome, differences in cancer incidence (penetrance) according to the gene involved have led to the stratification of cancer surveillance. By contrast, any differences in penetrance determined by the type of pathogenic variant remain unknown. Objective. To determine cumulative incidences of cancer in carriers of truncating and missense or aberrant splicing pathogenic …
