Short-term variability of mesozooplankton in a Mediterranean Coastal sound (Stagnone di Marsala, Western Sicily)
2001
Short-term variations in mesozooplankton were studied during four 24-h periods at one station in a Mediterranean coastal sound (Stagnone di Marsala, western Sicily) in May, July and October 1996 and March 1997. Zooplankton samples were collected every three or six hours with a plankton net (mesh size 125 µm) towed horizontally at the surface. Hydrometric data (height of tide, speed and direction of current) were also recorded to assess the influence of the hydrodynamic conditions on fluctuations in zooplankton abundance and changes in population structure. The zooplankton assemblages were markedly dominated by copepods and their naupliar stages, which consistently accounted for more than 95…

"La ocasión": una novela en el eje de la vacilación
2014
This paper aims to analyze Juan Jose Saer’s narrative strategy in the novel "La ocasion". The author takes over some of the characters belonging to Argentinian collective imagination –who are national mythts–, what allows him to show the pampas as a misty and insurmountable mythical place. The especial mapping of plain he draws is not only a geographic framework in which the landowner, the gaucho or immigrant face both the environment and the otherness. This may be understood as a metaphor of man’s general condition. From a Lacanian orientation, the second part of this article examines the configuration of the main character from its central theme: spirit-matter dichotomy.

Impact of the refugee crisis in the EU CSDP. Reference to the Spanish contribution
2015
For the last three years the EU has been facing a refugee crisis which adds on to the flux of immigrants heading to Europe. The absence of safe and legal routes results in both immigrants and refugees having to recur to traffic mafias in order to cross the Mediterranean (through two main routes, the central one from Libya and the eastern one from Turkey), which ends up turning into a pit for thousands of deaths. The EU has launched a dispositive to fight against this situation, specifically in the route that stems from Libya, the operation EUNAVFOR MED. However, its features raise a series of problems which the Security Council’s Resolution 2240 (2015) has yet to resolve.
El uso de la fuerza contra el Estado Islámico en Irak y Siria: problemas de fundamentación jurídica
2017
Current military campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria raises the question of the admissibility of the right to use force in self-defence against attacks by non-State actors in other States. International law in this area remains controversial and State practice ambiguous and inconsistent. This article analyses the legal basis invoked by States to justify their military operations against ISIL. Consent provided by the Iraqi government is lacking in the case of Syria, leaving only self-defence as feasible legal basis. The broad support for the use of force against Islamic State sides with conflicting views regarding the need of territorial State consent to the use of force on …
Revisiting the Mathematical Difficulties in Patinkin Cartel Model and Joint Profit Maximization
2015
We discuss the mathematical difficulties encountered in Patinkin's classical cartel model. It may be impossible to derive Patinkin's cartel by finding the reciprocal marginal cost functions: it could be impossible for cartel members to compute a solution, unless certain assumptions are made to simplify the problem, such as quasi-linear marginal costs or constant marginal costs. The total cost function is incoherent with respect to the sum of members' total cost. The model cannot handle constant marginal costs but we remind that de Mesnard's (2009, 2011) model of cartel with exogenous market shares allow solving the problem. We conclude that the Patinkin model of cartel is not so self-eviden…
Border Maps. (Counter-)cartographies of the Mediterranean
2020
145 Multifunction Role of Osteonectin/SPARC during Human embryonic and Feta Development
1991
The temporal and spatial distribution of osteonectin/SPARC was investigated during different stages of human development by in situ hybridization and histochemistry Specific mRNA was associated with(a) tissues exhibiting high rates of matrix production (skin, vessels, tendons fetal mesenchyme), (b) cells involved in the process of mineralization (osteoblasts, chondrocytes, odontoblasts), (c)production of basement membranes (glomeruli and (d) steroid synthesis (adrenal gland, Leydig cells) In the growth plate, expression was found in the upper hypertrophic and proliferative but not in the mineralized zone. Histochemistry detected osteonectin extra-cellularly in mineralized tissues, whereas o…
