Comparison of two histopathologic methods for evaluating subcutaneous reaction to mineral trioxide aggregate

2011

Objectives: One of the most important factors for suitable materials for pulp therapy is biocompatibility. Two histopathologic methods of Cox and Federation Dentaire International (FDI) were used to evaluate inflammation. In Cox method, density of inflammatory cells, tissue reactions like fibrosis, vascular responses like congestion and fibrin extravasation have been used to evaluate inflammatory reactions. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of pathologists’ interpretations using two different methods. Study design: Three pathologists observed the degree of inflammation in 225 histopathologic sections. These sections showed inflammation in subcutaneous connective tissue of ra…

Repair of bone defect by nano-modified white mineral trioxide aggregates in rabbit: a histopathological study

2014

Background: Many researchers have tried to enhance materials functions in different aspects of science using nano-modification method, and in many cases the results have been encouraging. To evaluate the histopathological responses of the micro-/nano-size cement-type biomaterials derived from calcium silicate-based composition with addition of nano tricalcium aluminate (3CaO.Al 2 O 3 ) on bone healing response. Material and Methods: Ninety mature male rabbits were anesthetized and a bone defect was created in the right mandible. The rabbits were divided into three groups, which were in turn subdivided into five subgroups with six animals each based on the defect filled by: white mineral tri…

Calcium-enriched bread for treatment of uremic hyperphosphatemia

2004

Abstract Objective To assess phosphate-binding efficacy of a new food product, bread with unusually high calcium content (Ca-bread). Design and setting A randomized parallel group trial in the university hospital outpatient dialysis unit. Patients Fifty-three randomly selected uremic patients who met the following inclusion criteria: (1) required maintenance hemodialysis treatment, (2) were not to receive vitamin D throughout the study, (3) were nondiabetic, and (4) were diagnosed with hyperphosphatemia. Intervention Fifty-three patients were randomized into 2 groups: control group (n = 26), which received calcium acetate as a phosphate binder throughout the study, and Ca-bread group (n = 2…

Aqueous Solubility Diagrams for Cementitious Waste Stabilization Systems. 4. A Carbonation Model for Zn-Doped Calcium Silicate Hydrate by Gibbs Energ…

2002

A thermodynamic Gibbs energy minimization (GEM) solid solution-aqueous solution (SSAS) equilibrium model was used to determine the solubility of Zn from calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) phases doped with 0, 0.1, 1, 5, and 10% Zn at a unity (Ca+Zn)/Si molar ratio. Both the stoichiometry and standard molar Gibbs energy (G(o)298) of the Zn-bearing end-member in the ideal ternary Zn-bearing calcium silicate hydrate (CZSH) solid solution were determined by a "dual-thermodynamic" (GEM-DT) estimation technique. The SSAS model reproduces a complex sequence of reactions suggested to occur in a long-term weathering scenario of cementitious waste forms at subsurface repository conditions. The GEM model …

Biocompatibility of New Pulp-capping Materials NeoMTA Plus, MTA Repair HP, and Biodentine on Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells

2017

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity of MTA Repair HP, NeoMTA Plus, and Biodentine, new bioactive materials used for dental pulp capping, on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs).Biological testing was carried out in vitro on hDPSCs. Cell viability and cell migration assays were performed using eluates of each capping material. To evaluate cell morphology and cell attachment to the different materials, hDPSCs were directly seeded onto the material surfaces and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the pulp-capping materials was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray and eluates were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-mass …

High Photoluminescence Quantum Yields in Organic Semiconductor-Perovskite Composite Thin Films.

2017

One of the obstacles towards efficient radiative recombination in hybrid perovskites is a low exciton binding energy, typically in the orders of tens of meV. It has been shown that the use of electron-donor additives can lead to a substantial reduction of the non-radiative recombination in perovskite films. Herein, the approach using small molecules with semiconducting properties, which are candidates to be implemented in future optoelectronic devices, is presented. In particular, highly luminescent perovskite-organic semiconductor composite thin films have been developed, which can be processed from solution in a simple coating step. By tuning the relative concentration of methylammonium l…

Traditional endodontic surgery versus modern technique: a 5-year controlled clinical trial.

2014

In this study, we compared outcomes of traditional apicoectomy versus modern apicoectomy, by means of a controlled clinical trial with a 5-year follow-up. The study investigated 938 teeth in 843 patients. On the basis of the procedure performed, the teeth were grouped in 3 groups. Differences between the groups were the method of osteotomy (type of instruments used), type of preparation of retrograde cavity (different apicoectomy angles and instruments used for root-end preparation), and root-end filling material used (gray mineral trioxide aggregate or silver amalgam). Outcome (tooth healing) was estimated after 1 and 5 years, postoperatively. Clinical success rates after 1 year were 67% (…

Osseous reaction to implantation of two endodontic cements : mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium enriched mixture (CEM)

2012

Aim: The aim of the present in vivo study was to determine bone tissue reaction to calcium enriched mixture (CEM) and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) using a rat femur model. Study Design: Sixty-three rats were selected and randomly divided into three groups of 21 each [experimental groups (n=15), control (n=6)]. Implantation cavities were prepared in each femoral bone and randomly filled with the biomaterials only in the experimental groups. The animals in three groups were sacrificed 1, 4, and 8 weeks postoperatively. Histologic evaluations comprising inflammation severity and new bone formation were blindly made on H&E-stained decalcified 6-µm sections. Results: At 1, 4, and 8 weeks aft…

Biocompatibility of three new calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers on human periodontal ligament stem cells.

2016

Aim To evaluate the biocompatibility of three calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers, Bioroot BC Sealer (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, France), Endoseal MTA (EndoSeal, Maruchi, Seoul, Korea) and Nano-ceramic Sealer (B&L Biotech, Fairfax, VA, USA) (NCS), on human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). Methodology Human periodontal ligament stem cells were cultured in the presence of various endodontic sealer eluates for 24 h. Cell viability was determined using the MTT assay. Cell death and changes in phenotype induced by the set endodontic sealer eluates were evaluated through flow cytometry. Also, an in vitro scratch wound-healing model was used to determine their effects in cel…

Response of periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate and Biodentine: a pilot histological study on humans.

2018

Background The aim of this study was to investigate for the first time the histological response of human periodontium to mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Biodentine. Methods Six patients scheduled for implant full-arch rehabilitation were randomly assigned to one of the two test groups: MTA or Biodentine treatment. For each patient, two teeth scheduled for strategic extraction were randomly assigned either to the test or to the control treatment. A lateral perforation was drilled on the root and either repaired with MTA/Biodentine or filled with gutta-percha(control). Three months later, the teeth were extracted along with the coronal third of the alveolar bone and a portion of gingiva…
