Family networks and refugees’ health conditions. A picture from Italian informal settlements

2021

While the relationships between social networks and health are widely acknowledged in the literature, few of these studies have covered the population of refugees living in makeshift camps. In our analysis of a nationally representative Italian survey of individuals living in informal settlements, we find that many had weak family relations: only 10 per cent had one or more family members in their settlement. The paper analyses the effects of individual social network on two measures of health, and finds that the refugees’ health conditions were associated with both their personal characteristics and the characteristics of the settlement. The results show that more than 50 per cent of these…

Welcome aboard: are birds migrating across the Mediterranean Sea using ships as stopovers during adverse weather conditions?

2022

Birds use stopovers during migration to interrupt endurance flight in order to minimize immediate and/or future fitness costs. Stopovers on ships is considered an exceptional and anecdotal event in the ornithological literature. This does not match the experience we had in the summer of 2021, during an oceanographic campaign in the Central Mediterranean, when we regularly observed on average 2.8 birds, of at least 13 species, stopping on board during the 25 days of the campaign. The median stopping time was 42 min, ranging from a few minutes to overnight stays on board. The probability of finding a bird stopping aboard increased with wind force and cloud cover. Birds also stopped more often…

Comparison between simulated and observed LHC beam backgrounds in the ATLAS experiment at E beam =4 TeV

2018

Results of dedicated Monte Carlo simulations of beam-induced background (BIB) in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented and compared with data recorded in 2012. During normal physics operation this background arises mainly from scattering of the 4 TeV protons on residual gas in the beam pipe. Methods of reconstructing the BIB signals in the ATLAS detector, developed and implemented in the simulation chain based on the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation package, are described. The interaction rates are determined from the residual gas pressure distribution in the LHC ring in order to set an absolute scale on the predicted rates of BIB so that they can be compared qua…

Toward evidence-based severity assessment in rat models with repeated seizures: II. Chemical post-status epilepticus model.

2019

Objective: Considering the complexity of neuronal circuits and their epilepsy-associated alterations, epilepsy models cannot be completely replaced by in vitro experimental approaches. Decisions about ethical approval of in vivo studies require a thorough weighing of the animal's burden and the benefit regarding the expected gain in knowledge. Methods: Based on combined behavioral, biochemical, and physiological analyses, we assessed the impact on animal well-being and condition in different phases of the pilocarpine post–status epilepticus (SE) model in rats. Results: As a consequence of SE, increased levels of impairment were evident in the early postinsult phase and late chronic phase, w…

Chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the essential oil ofCurcuma leucorhizaRoxb

2012

The essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation from the rhizomes and leaves of Curcuma leucorhiza Roxb. were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) for the first time. A total of forty-nine compounds were identified in both oils. The main compounds in the rhizome and leaf oils were germacrone (9.6–19.7%), curdione (19.1–19.5%), camphor (7.2–8.1%), 1,8-cineole (4.0–7.4%), curzerene (3.0–5.7%), linalool (5.2–5.4%), neo-curdione (2.8–4.6%) and isoborneol (2.0–3.8%). Screening of the essential oils showed promising antibacterial activity (7–16 mm inhibition zone) against Streptococcus mutans, Pseudomonas putida, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and antifu…

Studies on bucephalid digeneans parasitising molluscs and fishes in Finland. II. The description of Rhipidocotyle fennica n. sp. and its discriminati…

1992

Rhipidocotyle fennica n. sp. (= Rhipidocotyle Type A of Taskinen et al., 1991) from the intestine of Esox lucius in central Finland is described and compared by means of a principal components analysis (PCA) with R. campanula (= Rhipidocotyle Type B of Taskinen et al., 1991). Its cercaria develops in the bivalve Anodonta anatina and the metacercaria occurs in the skin and fins of Rutilus rutilus. The metacercaria is discriminated from that of R. campanula by PCA and is described along with aspects of the chaetotaxy of the cercaria. The new species is distinguished from R. campanula, R. kovalae, R. papillosa and R. septpapillata.

Interhemispheric connections through the pallial commissures in the brain ofPodarcis hispanicaandGallotia stehlinii(Reptilia, Lacertidae)

1990

The cells-of-origin and the mode and site of termination of the interhemispheric connections passing through the anterior and posterior pallial commissures in the telencephalon of two lizards (Podarcis hispanica and Gallotia stehlinii) were investigated by studying the anterograde and retrograde transport of unilaterally injected horseradish peroxidase. The commissural projections arise mainly from pyramidal cells in the medial, dorsomedial, and dorsal cortices (medial subfield). Additionally some non-pyramidal neurons in the medial and dorsal cortices contribute to the commissural system. Medial cortex neurons project to the contralateral anterior septum through the anterior pallial commis…

Neuronal circuitry in the medial cerebral cortex of lizards

1997

The medial cortex of lizards is a simple three-layered brain region displaying many characteristics which parallel the hippocampal fascia dentata of mammals. Its principal neurons form a morphologically diverse population, partly as a result of the prominent continuous growth of this nervous centre. By using the classical Golgi impregnation method we describe here the morphology of the principal neurons (8 types) and the short-axon interneurons (18 types) populating the medial cortex of Podarcis hispanica as well as the connections between them.
