We explored environmental variables structuring littoral macroinvertebrate communities in a large lake basin along a gradient of nutrient enrichment. Furthermore, we evaluated sensitivity and cost-effi ciency of different sampling schemes (i.e. combinations of three habitat types and a number of standard sampling methods) to detect changes in macroinvertebrate communities along this anthropogenic disturbance gradient. Partial canonical ordination analysis showed that habitat characteristics accounted for a major part (56 % uniquely) of the explained variation in the species composition of invertebrate communities. Molecular Selectivity of CH 4 –C 2 H 6 Mixed Hydrates: A GCMC Study

International audience; In this paper, we report the first grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation study aiming at characterizing the competitive trapping of CH4 and C2H6 molecules into clathrate hydrates under temperature conditions typical of those encountered at the surface of Titan. Various compositions of the fluid in contact with the clathrate phase have been considered in the simulations, including pure methane, pure ethane, and mixed fluids made of various methane/ethane ratios. Modified Landau levels, damped harmonic oscillator and two-dimensional pseudo-bosons

In a series of recent papers one of us has analyzed in some details a class of elementary excitations called {\em pseudo-bosons}. They arise from a special deformation of the canonical commutation relation $[a,a^\dagger]=\1$, which is replaced by $[a,b]=\1$, with $b$ not necessarily equal to $a^\dagger$. Here, after a two-dimensional extension of the general framework, we apply the theory to a generalized version of the two-dimensional Hamiltonian describing Landau levels. Moreover, for this system, we discuss coherent states and we deduce a resolution of the identity. We also consider a different class of examples arising from a classical system, i.e. a damped harmonic oscillator.

Comparing biological classifications of freshwater phytoplankton: a case study from South China

The use of ecological classification systems is becoming more and more widely used when studying phytoplankton. Grouping phytoplankton species into ecologically coherent groups allow to reduce redundancy and in this way, to handle a minor number of biological variables when investigating the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems. Derived variables calculated from similar joint responses: some characteristics and examples

Abstract A technique (Cox and Wermuth, 1992) is reviewed for finding linear combinations of a set of response variables having special relations of linear conditional independence with a set of explanatory variables. A theorem in linear algebra is used both to examine conditions in which the derived variables take a specially simple form and lead to reduced computations. Examples are discussed of medical and psychological investigations in which the method has aided interpretation.

A Stochastic Approach to Quantum Statistics Distributions: Theoretical Derivation and Monte Carlo Modelling

Abstract. We present a method aimed at a stochastic derivation of the equilibrium distribution of a classical/quantum ideal gas in the framework of the canonical ensemble. The time evolution of these ideal systems is modelled as a series of transitions from one system microstate to another one and thermal equilibrium is reached via a random walk in the single-particle state space. Fitting generalized linear models with unspecified link function: A P-spline approach

Generalized linear models (GLMs) outline a wide class of regression models where the effect of the explanatory variables on the mean of the response variable is modelled throughout the link function. The choice of the link function is typically overlooked in applications and the canonical link is commonly used. Influence functions and efficiencies of the canonical correlation and vector estimates based on scatter and shape matrices

In this paper, the influence functions and limiting distributions of the canonical correlations and coefficients based on affine equivariant scatter matrices are developed for elliptically symmetric distributions. General formulas for limiting variances and covariances of the canonical correlations and canonical vectors based on scatter matrices are obtained. Also the use of the so-called shape matrices in canonical analysis is investigated. Microcanonical foundation of nonextensivity and generalized thermostatistics based on the fractality of the phase space

We develop a generalized theory of (meta)equilibrium statistical mechanics in the thermodynamic limit valid for both smooth and fractal phase spaces. In the former case, our approach leads naturally to Boltzmann-Gibbs standard thermostatistics while, in the latter, Tsallis thermostatistics is straightforwardly obtained as the most appropriate formalism. We first focus on the microcanonical ensemble stressing the importance of the limit $t \to \infty$ on the form of the microcanonical measure. Interestingly, this approach leads to interpret the entropic index $q$ as the box-counting dimension of the (microcanonical) phase space when fractality is considered.

On each leaf of F we put its Poincare metric (this will be defined below in more precise terms). We thus obtain a (singular) hermitian metric on the tangent bundle TF of F , and dually a (singular) hermitian metric on the canonical bundle KF = T ∗ F of F .
