Building collective capabilities through ICT in a mountain region of Nepal: where social capital leads to collective action

2012

In this paper, we explore how ICT can lead to development specifically human development in Sen's capability approach. In answering to the critique that Sen views capabilities as the individual, we incorporate the societal level by adding collective capabilities. We propose that ICT helps to create or enhance SC of communities which in turn can lead to development by building collective capabilities through collective action. To illustrate, we conducted a qualitative case study of an ICT initiative in a remote mountain region of Nepal. We found support for our proposition and further that developing collective capabilities also simultaneously enhanced individual capabilities. We contribute …

POSS-tetraalkylammonium salts: A new class of ionic liquids

2012

A series of new polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane ionic liquids (POSS-ILs) based on the trimethylpropylammonium dielectric constants, which, conversely, display slight differences originating from the nature of the anions. The long alkyl-chain substituents on the POSS core infer on this series of ILs an overall hydrophobic character and solution properties comparable to those of classic cationic surfactants, resulting in an effective extractant capability of polyanions from aqueous solutions. Their solution diffusion properties, as investigated by room-temperature dynamic light scattering, solution conductivity, density, and osmometric measurements, do not provide evidence for the occurr…

Global retention models and their application to the prediction of chromatographic fingerprints

2020

Abstract The resolution of samples containing unknown compounds of different nature, or without standards available, as is the case of chromatographic fingerprints, is still a challenge. Possibly, the most problematic aspect that prevents systematic method development is finding models that describe without bias the retention behaviour of the compounds in the samples. In this work, the use of global models (able to describe the whole sample) is proposed as an alternative to the use of individual models for each solute. Global models contain parameters that are specific for each solute, while other parameters ‒related to the column and solvent‒ are common for all solutes. A special regressio…

Design of a transverse flux machine for power generation from seawaves

2014

In this paper, we present a transverse flux linear generator. We investigate the possibility to use this generator to extract energy from seawaves. We propose an optimization procedure that allows us to obtain an optimized design of the generator. The optimized design of the converter shows a power generation capability index much higher than other renewable systems.

The Effects of New Emerging Technologies on Human Resources : Emergence of Industry 4.0, a Necessary Evil?

2017

Master's thesis Business Administration BE501 - University of Agder 2017 Based on dynamic capability theory and existing literature, the study empirically investigates the effects of new emerging technologies on human resources; to know if the emergence of Industry 4.0 is a necessary evil or not. Descriptive research design with deductive qualitative analysis (DQA) method was used to analyse data obtained from 6 companies in Norway. Consistent with the two hypotheses deduced in our study, results confirmed in the first place that new emerging technologies have positive effect on human resources productivity. Secondly, new emerging technologies have potential negative challenges on human res…

A holistic perspective on the theoretical foundations for ICT4D research

2018

While many theories have guided research Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D), we are yet to construct a clear and coherent narrative that would help us answer the question of how ICT fosters development in underdeveloped communities. In this paper, we argue that one of the main reasons for this is that our holistic understanding of ICT4D is seldom grounded in theories to understand the core areas that define the field, namely, ICT, Development, and, ‘4’ which are the transformative processes that link the two. Through a brief literature review, we list theories that have informed ICT4D research in each of these areas. We present examples of theories, namely, C…

Motivation and Consequences of Internet and Mobile Phone Usage among the Urban Poor in Kampala, Uganda

2015

The Internet and mobile phones are rapidly diffusing throughout communities, and it is important to understand what people are actually doing with their access to these technologies. This study seeks to improve our understanding of the motivational factors and social and economic consequences of such use among the urban poor, which is examined through the Diffusion of Innovations Theory (DoI) and the Capability Approach (CA). The combined theoretical perspective was introduced to explore findings of an explorative case study conducted among the urban poor in Kampala, Uganda, where Internet access was found to be low due to high illiteracy and associated costs. On the other hand, mobile phon…
