Accumulation of chitin and glucan on S. cerevisiae and C. albicans protoplasts begins shortly after resuspension in the regeneration medium, and mannoprotein molecules also appear retained by the regenerating wall after 30–60 minutes in S. cerevisiae or after a longer lag period in C. albicans. Nevertheless, a considerable fraction of the synthesized mannoproteins, which in SDS-acrylamide gels exhibit a different pattern from that of wall mannoproteins of cells, are still released to the growth medium during at least eight hours. De novo synthesis of chitin synthase, but not of glucan synthase, is observed in S. cerevisiae from about 30 minutes after initiation of the regeneration process. …

The innate immunity is more generalized with robust response whereas the other has a highly specific response to infectious pathogens. Changes in the physical environment or the availability of food resources could lead to stress-related physiological responses affecting larval fitness, growth and survival. Abstract A polysaccharide isolated after mild acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharide of Vibrio vulnificus clinical isolate YJ016 was found to contain l -Fuc, d -GlcpNAc, 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy- d -glucose (di-N-acetylbacillosamine, d -QuiNAc4NAc), and 2-acetimidoylamino-2-deoxy- l -galacturonic acid ( l -GalNAmA). The last sugar derivative was confirmed by correlations for nitrogen-linked protons in 2D TOCSY and ROESY spectra measured in a H2O–D2O mixture. Endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides, LPS) are the main surface antigens and virulence factors of Gram-negative bacteria involved for example in the development of nosocomial infections and sepsis. They consist of three main regions: O-specific polysaccharide, core oligosaccharide, and lipid A. Bacteria modify LPS structure to escape the immune defence, but also to adapt to environmental conditions. The chemistry of death--Adipocere degradation in modern graveyards.

The formation of adipocere slows further decomposition and preserves corpses for decades or even centuries. This resistance to degradation is a serious problem, especially with regard to the reuse of graves after regular resting times. We present results from an exhumation series in modern graveyards where coffins from water-saturated earth graves contained adipocere embedded in black humic material after resting times of about 30 years. Based on the assumption that this humic material resulted from in situ degradation of adipocere, its presence contradicts the commonly held opinion that adipocere decomposition only occurs under aerobic conditions. Synthesis of β-d-mannosides from β-d-glucosides via an intramolecular Sn2 reaction at C-2

Abstract The selective synthesis of β- d -mannosides was achieved by first synthesizing β- d -glucosides that carry a N -phenylcarbamoyl protecting group at O-3. These derivatives were transformed into the corresponding β- d -mannosides by intramolecular nucleophilic substitution with inversion of configuration at C-2, the O -triflyl group being the leaving group. Subsequent intramolecular attack of the neighboring carbamoyl group resulted in the formation of the 2,3-carbonate of the desired β d -mannoside.

Wall mannoproteins of the yeast and mycelial cells of Candida albicans: nature of the glycosidic bonds and polydispersity of their mannan moieties.

SUMMARY: Zymolyase released between 20 and 25% of the total protein from purified walls of yeast (Y) and mycelial (M) cells of Candida albicans. The material released contained 92% carbohydrate (86% mannose and 6% glucose) and 7:< protein. Over 85% of the carbohydrate was N-glycosidically linked to the protein and the rest (less than 15%) was linked O-glycosidically. Highly polydisperse, high molecular mass mannoproteins, resolved by electrophoresis as four defined bands in Y cells and two bands in M cells, had both types of sugar chains.
