A review of the biological and pharmacological activities of saponins.

1996

Summary This paper reviews the important biological and pharmacological activities of saponins reported over the last few years. These include cancer-related activity, as well as antiphlogistic and antiallergic, immunomodulating, antihepatotoxic, antiviral, hypoglycemic, antifungal and molluscicidal activities. The action of saponins on the cardiovascular, central nervous, and endocrine systems and other miscellaneous effects are also discussed.

Synthetic Inhibitors of Cell Adhesion: A Glycopeptide from E-Selectin Ligand 1 (ESL-1) with the Arabino Sialyl Lewisx Structure

2001

Particularly selective methods are required for the synthesis of arabino sialyl Lewisx glycopeptides owing to the acid-labile β-arabinopyranoside bond. It is important for the inhibition of cell adhesion that the arabino sialyl Lewisx glycopeptide 1, which contains the Gly 672 -Asp 681 sequence of the E-selectin Ligand 1 (ESL-1), binds ten times more strongly than sialyl Lewisx to E-selectin, although it is monovalent and does not contain L-fucose, which is considered essential.

Growth stage and conditions affect sorbitol:sucrose ratio in peach source and sink organs

2008

Along with sucrose, sorbitol represents the major photosynthetic product and the main form of translocated carbon in peach. In leaves, the ability to synthesize and accumulate sorbitol and sucrose increases with leaf age or distance from the apex until full maturity. Also, in the internodes of a growing shoot sorbitol:sucrose ratio (SOR:SUC) increases with distance from the apex. In mature leaves, SOR:SUC increases in response to fruit sink removal and water deficit, due mainly to sorbitol rather than sucrose accumulation. Data from ‘Encore’ peach show that SOR:SUC remains fairly constant around 2:1 from the leaf blade all the way to the fruit peduncle and drops sharply in the fruit flesh a…

Carbohydrates as Chemical Constituents of Biowaste Composts and their Humic and Fulvic Acids

1995

The decomposition of organic matter of source-separated biowaste during composting was followed during 18 months. Compost samples were fractionated into three parts: (i) hot water soluble extract (HWE) (ii) bitumen fraction and (iii) humic substances (humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA)). Original compost samples and the HA and FA fractions were hydrolyzed with sulfuric acid for hexoses and pentoses. Quantitative spectrophotometric and qualitative GC/MS analyses of monosaccharides as trimethylsilyl ethers of the corresponding alditols were carried out.During composting, the amount of HA in the organic matter of the compost increased, the amounts of HWE and bitumen decreased and the amoun…
