Comparison of the Properties of Activated Carbons Produced in One-Stage and Two-Stage Processes
2018
Activated carbons (ACs) can be produced from biomass in a thermal process either in a direct carbonization-activation process or by first carbonizing the biomass and later activating the bio-chars into activated carbons. The properties of the ACs are dependent on the type of process used for production. In this study, the properties of activated carbons produced in one-stage and two-stage processes are considered. Activated carbons were produced by physical activation of two types of starting materials: bio chars produced from spruce and birch chips in a commercial carbonization plant and from the corresponding raw chips. The activated carbons produced were characterized regarding specific …
Influence of the process parameters on the microstructure of a hardfacing coating elaborated by hot isostatic pressing
2019
Hot Isostatic Pressing elaboration of Norem02, an austenitic-ferritic hypereutectoid stainless steel, leads to the formation ofan austenitic matrix with a mixture of acicular M7C 3 and globular M23 C 6 carbides. The sintering tests, carried out by using an AISI304L container, showed that the final microstructure and the carbides’ distribution of the HIPed Norem02 are strongly influencedby the process parameters (heating and cooling rate, sintering time, holding temperature and pressure) and by the particles’ size, microstructure and phase distribution of the initial powder. The morphological, crystallographic and chemical analysis of the sinteredsamples were completed by comprehension of the…
Influence of microbial diversity on soil organic carbon dynamics highlighted by a 13C-labelling technique
2012
Soil organic matter (SOM) represents the main pool of carbon within the biosphere, estimated at roughly twice that in atmospheric CO2. In agrosystems, organic amendments are common to maintain soil C stocks. However, recent studies have revealed that these practices can lead to a priming effect, corresponding to enhanced release of CO2 into the atmosphere, due to over-mineralisation of soil organic carbon. Therefore, appropriate decisions regarding organic input management require better understanding of the biogeochemical cycles related to SOM dynamics. As soil microorganisms are major actors in SOM turnover, their diversity is likely to influence SOM dynamics. In this context, the relatio…
Effect of an insect growth regulator (halofenozide) on the cuticular hydrocarbons of Culex pipiens larvae
2013
The cuticular hydrocarbons of the fourth-instar larvae of Culex pipiens aged one and six days were analysed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The effect of an insect growth regulator (halofenozide = RH-0345) on the cuticular hydrocarbons was evaluated using newly moulted fourth-instar larvae of C. pipiens, at the lethal concentrations (LC50 = 12.58 and LC90 = 28.58 mu g/l). A previous study revealed that RH-0345 is toxic to larvae of C. pipiens by induction of precocious larval moulting. Several cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) were identified and many of the other compounds remained unknown. Our data show that the CHC classes consisted of n-alkanes (C23-C29) and …
Dissemination/Communication Plan. Period concerning the plan: 01.01.2018-31.12.2020.
2018
The plan concerning different dissemination/communication activities during three years of the project implementation is given. Scientific results are proposed to be disseminated in well-recognized bi-annual international conferences, such as European Conference on Composite Materials (ECCM) and International Conference on Composite Materials (ICCM). Self-archiving of the main project results is planned within subject-based open-access repositories, such as ResearchGate and Zenodo. Two scientific publications in Q1-Q2 SCI journals and two popular scientific publications in popular scientific Latvian journals are foreseen. All data files obtained within the project are to be stored in centra…
Total oxidation of propene at low temperature over Co3O4–CeO2 mixed oxides: Role of surface oxygen vacancies and bulk oxygen mobility in the catalyti…
2008
Liotta, L. F. Ousmane, M. Di Carlo, G. Pantaleo, G. Deganello, G. Marci, G. Retailleau, L. Giroir-Fendler, A.; Co3O4, CeO2 and Co3O4-CeO2 mixed oxides with Co/Ce nominal atomic ratio 0.1:5, prepared by co-precipitation method with sodium carbonate, were tested in the oxidation of propene under lean condition and the catalyst stability was checked by performing three consecutive heating-cooling cycles. Characterization of the textural properties were performed by surface area measurement BET, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. Among the Co3O4-CeO2 mixed oxides, Co3O4 (30 Wt%)-CeO2 (70 wt%) gives the best activity attaining full propene conversion at …
Changes in physicochemical properties of soils in the area affected by lime industry
2016
Lime and cement industry belongs to the best developed branches of industry in Opole Voivodeship. The plants are located in eastern and central part of the province, in the vicinity of the city of Opole and the towns of Krapkowice and Strzelce Opolskie due to the location of the resources of calcareous raw materials (limestones and marls). The impact of lime and cement industry on the natural environment, especially soils, was studied by many authors, but these works do not concern the Province of Opole, which is one of the main centers of lime and cement industry in Poland for centuries. The article is an attempt to show changes in physicochemical properties of soils being under long lastin…

Ultrafast Interface Charge Separation in Carbon Nanodot-Nanotube Hybrids
2021
Carbon dots are an emerging family of zero-dimensional nanocarbons behaving as tunable light harvesters and photoactivated charge donors. Coupling them to carbon nanotubes, which are well-known electron acceptors with excellent charge transport capabilities, is very promising for several applications. Here, we first devised a route to achieve the stable electrostatic binding of carbon dots to multi- or single-walled carbon nanotubes, as confirmed by several experimental observations. The photoluminescence of carbon dots is strongly quenched when they contact either semiconductive or conductive nanotubes, indicating a strong electronic coupling to both. Theoretical simulations predict a favo…
Modification of PVDF nanoparticles by controlled free radical graft copolymerization in supercritical carbon dioxide
2014
PVDF (polyvinylidenefluoride) membranes are widely used in microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) due to their excellent processability, chemical resistance, well-controlled porosity, and good thermal properties [1]. Moreover this polymer is also frequently adopted in bio-medical devices owing to its good biocompatibility [2]. On the other hand, the use of PVDF membranes in biomedical applications is limited to some extent by the hydrophobicity of their exposed area, which mainly arises from the nature of the pore surface. Prompted by these considerations in the present work we have studied the modification of PVDF nanoparticles with hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) thus obtaining a m…
