INFORMACIÓN Y EXPOSICIÓN INDIRECTA PARA REDUCIR ESTEREOTIPOS HACIA EL ENVEJECIMIENTO

2016

Abstract.Purpose: The Image that society has about older people has been built on a base of stereotypes, far away from reality. This social image will have a determinant influence on attitudes and behaviors from all those people related with them, including health care professionals. It should be mandatory to eradicate negative stereotypes against aging during university formation, and in this practice get sensitive professionals who will attend people in their final state of life. Method: the treatment “Information plus indirect experience” was set throw the viewing of the short film “Como un Rolling” (Castilla, 2013). This film exposes the concept of active aging, and had the purpose to b…

Moral assessment of frozen human embryo adoption in the light of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church

2017

As the number of frozen human embryos continues to rise daily, with numbers not expected to fall, an answer must be found to this dilemma. Four possible solutions have been suggested: a) thaw the embryos and allow them to perish; b) thaw them and donate them for biomedical research; c) thaw them and donate them in adoption; and d) leave them frozen indefinitely. This paper will evaluate the morality of these four possible solutions, particularly frozen human embryo adoption in the light of the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, which in its Instruction Dignitas Personae, appears to have opted to consider this practice as illicit. We also review the various stances of expert moralists in fa…

Personality of Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis

2017

The personality of pelvic fractures in the elderly differs in many ways from pelvic ring lesions in adults. Only high-energy trauma leads to pelvic ring disruptions. Concomitant lesions of the soft tissues occur frequently. In the elderly, low-energy falls are the rule. The most important symptom is pain, which restricts mobility. Hemodynamic instability in fragility fractures of the pelvis is rare. Emergency stabilization with pelvic binders or sheets, C-clamping or emergency external fixation are not needed. Arteriography and selective embolization is only recommended in the rare patients, who develop an active arterial bleeding due to the pelvic fracture. Especially patients, who are tre…

Electromagnetic distal targeting system does not reduce the overall operative time of the intramedullary nailing for humeral shaft fractures

2018

Abstract Introduction We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the use of the electromagnetic distal targeting system in treating humeral shaft fracture. Methods Patients were divided in: Group 1) patients that received a distal locking screw placement following the free-hand technique; Group 2) patients in which the distal locking screw was performed using the SURESHOT device. Results No differences were noted comparing Group 1 (freehand) [71,9 range 40–135 min] to Group 2 (SURESHOT)[70, range 25–125 min]. Conclusion The use of the EM distal targeting system doesn't reduce the overall operative time of the humeral shaft fracture fixation using IMN.

Primary Mucosal Epithelial Cell Cultivation: A Reliable and Accelerated Isolation

2019

We illustrate a reliable and accelerated isolation routine for mucosal epithelial cells, which thereupon can be used for soft tissue engineering. This is highly important in the field of soft tissue engineering because mucosal equivalents are frequently usable in several surgical fields like gynecology, urology, otorhinolaryngology, ophthalmology, maxillofacial surgery, and many others. In this context the isolation of mucosal epithelial cells suitable for tissue engineering is mandatory. The reliable cultivation of mucosal or skin epithelial cells is challenging and there is currently no reproducible method. We demonstrate a solution for this problem by developing an accelerated and nevert…

Effects of Food Label Health and Nutrition Claims on Consumer Perceptions

2009

Two experiments are reported that examined consumers' perceptions of food package labels where health and nutrition claims were present and where they had been removed. Unlike previous studies examining the influence of information on perception, realistic materials were used. This was accomplished by presenting information on a computer as photo-realistic images of packages where claims had been removed by editing to give a without-claims condition. Automatic presentation of materials and data collection meant participants proceeded through the computer questionnaire without the presence of an experimenter. The experiment was conducted with both British and French consumers. No significant…

Prophylaxis of invasive fungal infections in patients with hematological malignancies and solid tumors

2003

Morbidity and mortality in patients with malignancies, especially leukemia and lymphoma, are increased by invasive fungal infections. Since diagnosis of invasive fungal infection is often delayed, antifungal prophylaxis is an attractive approach for patients expecting prolonged neutropenia. Antifungal prophylaxis has obviously attracted much interest resulting in dozens of clinical trials since the late 1970s. The non-absorbable polyenes are probably ineffective in preventing invasive fungal infections, but may reduce superficial mycoses. Intravenous amphotericin B and the newer azoles were used in clinical trials, but their role in antifungal prophylaxis is still not well defined. Allogene…

The pre-Medical Emergency Team response: Nurses' decision-making escalating deterioration to treating teams using urgent review criteria.

2020

Aim To describe nurses' decision-making, experiences and perceptions of escalating deteriorating patients to the treating medical team using urgent clinical review criteria. Design A qualitative design comprising individual in-depth interviews with nurses from a major Australian metropolitan tertiary teaching hospital. Method A purposive sample of 30 Registered Nurses from nine surgical and medical wards were interviewed in April 2018 using semi-structured interviews. An inductive thematic analysis was conducted. Results Identified themes included: detecting the deterioration; countering the problem; getting a response; and challenges faced in the process of escalation. Nurses reported an i…
