Exploring the construction of professional expertise in HRD: analysis of four HR developers’ work histories and career stories
2002
Explores the construction of professional expertise in HRD work through the examination of the careers of four individual HR developers who are employed as full‐time HRD personnel in various work organisations and already possess considerable experience of HRD work. A narrative approach to the development of professional expertise was applied and the building materials for professional expertise in HRD work retrospectively extracted from the developers’ formal work histories and career stories. The empirical data used consist of interviews with 20 full‐time HR developers working in large enterprises and governmental organisations in Finland. The present analysis is based on four career stor…
Ten essential features of European dual career development environments: A multiple case study
2021
Aim: Dual career development environments (DCDEs) support athletes’ effort in combining their competitive sporting careers with education or work. The characteristics of the environments may differ across cultures. The aim was to identify essential features of DCDEs based on a cross-case analysis of seven European DCDEs in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom within the Erasmus+ Sport project “Ecology of Dual Career”. Design: The study was designed as a multiple case study and based on two holistic ecological working models (Henriksen et al., 2020). The cross-case analysis included series of focus group discussions, in which two-three researchers from e…

The role of collegiality in the professional development of the teaching career: a proposal for an evaluation instrumentBakieva
2019
Employability Appraisal Scale (EAS): Development and Validation in a Spanish Sample
2018
Employability is an important issue in the labor context. Currently, the European Union presents employability as the path to full employment and active citizenship, and a strategy to reduce unemployment and poverty. This study develops and validates an Employability Appraisal Scale. Specifically, we propose a multidimensional employability scale that analyzes both individual indicators and personal circumstances from the Bioecological Model of Employability. The Employability Appraisal Scale (EAS) assesses personal and social dimensions of employability. It was developed and tested using data from 489 people from a very heterogeneous sample (precarious workers, professionals, prisoners, lo…

Development and first application of the athlete adaptation inventory: An exploratory study
2020
Geographic mobility has become an essential part of athletes’ career development and athletic migration is rapidly increasing. However, research on psychological aspects of athletes’ transnational mobility is lacking in the literature. In this study we describe the development of the Athlete Adaptation Inventory (AAI) and examine its first application in a sample of 143 professional and amateur elite migrant athletes. In summary, results indicate that cultural adaptation challenges were perceived as slightly difficult. However, female athletes reported more difficulties than male athletes in the sport domain, whereas male and team sport athletes reported more challenges in the non-sport dom…
ICT – the new frontier? Pushing the boundaries of careers practice
2014
Much progress has been made in integrating information and communications technology ICT into careers practice, but there is still room for improvement. An international lens is adopted to examine some key elements that contribute to the successful integration of information communications technology (ICT) into careers practice. We start by exploring the role of policy, using the UK as a case study. Linked(In)g sport management education with the sport industry: A preliminary study
2021
Social media are one of the most valuable management tools used by sport managers in the fulfilment of their daily tasks. However, the studies that share and analyse the impact of educational experiences that incorporate social media into sport management education for professional purposes are scarce to date. Thus, this study presents an educational innovation piloted in a sport management course where LinkedIn—the social media most associated with the professional sphere—is introduced through an experiential learning methodology, as a driver of students’ career development and as a tool to keep up to date and interact with the sport industry. To assess the learning outcomes, a new scale w…
