Plasma Acylcarnitines and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in a Mediterranean Population at High Cardiovascular Risk
2019
[Context] The potential associations between acylcarnitine profiles and incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and whether acylcarnitines can be used to improve diabetes prediction remain unclear.
Assessing the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw due to bisphosphonate therapy in the secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures
2012
There is evidence that the use oral bisphosphonates can lead to osteronecrosis of the jaws (ONJ). Although the occurrence of ONJ appears rare among oral bisphosphonates (BPs) users, it is important to know that it exists and can be opportunely minimized. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between BPs prescribed for the secondary prevention of osteoporotic fractures and the occurrence of ONJ. METHODS: An Italian record linkage claims database with a target population of around 18 million individuals (6 million over 55 years of age) constituted the data source. We conducted a nested case-control study within a cohort of individuals aged 55+ years old, who w…
Vitamin D substrate-product relationship in idiopathic hypercalciuria.
2007
Absorptive hypercalciuria (AH) is associated with elevated levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)(2)D). While no increase of 1,25(OH)(2)D after oral administration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) at high doses has been claimed in normal subjects, a substrate-product relationship has been reported in normal children, young people after UV irradiation, older persons, postmenopausal women, primary hyperparathyroidism, renal failure, osteomalacia, and sarcoidosis. No data of this relationship in AH is available. To investigate 25OHD-1,25(OH)(2)D substrate-product relationship in AH, 161 AH patients (mean age 60.9+/-11.7 years) and 110 age- and sex-matched controls (mean age 61.5+/-12.4 year…
Bioimpedance phase angle indicates catabolism in Type 2 diabetes
2015
Aims Body cell mass is directly proportional to the bioimpedance phase-angle which is an indicator of the amount of electrical charge that cell membranes can hold and is an index of cellular health and function. To evaluate whether the bioimpedance phase angle is relevant for indicating catabolism in people with diabetes and whether it discriminates between people with diabetes receiving different types of therapy. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed in 182 people with Type 2 diabetes and 107 age- and BMI-matched control subjects. The phase angle was measured at 5, 50 and 100 kHz using multifrequency bioimpedance analysis. The phase angles were compared among different diabetes th…
Polyamines are increased in obese children and are related to markers of oxidative/nitrosative stress and angiogenesis.
2011
Polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, and spermine) are polycationic amines derived from arginine, which is the precursor of nitric oxide (NO). Due to the close relationship between the metabolism of polyamines and NO metabolism, the alteration in polyamine homeostasis can affect the NO bioavailability at the endothelium. The objective of the study was to test the hypothesis that childhood obesity is associated with a significant modification of blood polyamines and to investigate the presence of correlation between these molecules, circulating markers of oxidative and nitrosative stress, and endothelial dysfunction. This was an observational analytical case-control study conducted at one terti…
Toenail cerium levels and risk of a first acute myocardial infarction: the EURAMIC and heavy metals study.
2006
The association between cerium status and risk of first acute myocardial infarction (AMI) was examined in a case-control study in 10 centres from Europe and Israel. Cerium in toenails was assessed by neutron activation analysis in 684 cases and 724 controls aged 70 years or younger. Mean concentrations of cerium were 186 and 173 microg/kg in cases and controls, respectively. Cerium was positively associated with low socio-economic status, smoking, mercury, zinc and scandium (p0.001). Cases had significantly higher levels of cerium than controls after adjustment for age and centre (case-control ratio 1.074; 95% CI 1.002-1.151) and increased in further adjustment for other cardiovascular risk…
Impact of inflammatory markers on cardiovascular mortality in patients with metabolic syndrome.
2008
Recent investigations suggest the inclusion of inflammatory markers in the definition of the metabolic syndrome (MS). The aim of this study was to address the role of C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-18 (IL-18) on cardiovascular prognosis in accordance to MS.A total of 1263 patients with documented coronary artery disease were prospectively included. We defined MS (MS yes: N=533, 42.2%) as the presence of at least three of the following criteria: triglyceridesor=150 mg/dl; low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (men:40 mg/dl women:50 mg/dl); body mass index greater than 30 kg/m; blood pressureor=130/85 mmHg; fasting glucoseor=100 mg/dl. In addition, we determine…
A case-control study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
1991
A retrospective case-control study was conducted using 46 patients affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and 92 closely matched healthy controls. Cases were ascertained through typical clinical and instrumental findings. Putative risk factors (bone fractures or major trauma, exposure to domestic animals, surgical operations, disease among first degree relatives and others) were investigated anamnestically using a standard questionnaire. Using Mantel-Haenzsel estimates of the odds ratio, no association was found between amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and the investigated variables.
Assisted reproductive techniques and risk of exstrophy-epispadias complex: a German case-control study.
2012
We assessed the risk of exstrophy-epispadias complex in children conceived by in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection.Data from the German Network for Congenital Uro-REctal malformations were compared to nationwide data from the German In Vitro Fertilization Register and the German Federal Statistical Office. Odds ratios (95% CI) were determined to quantify associations using logistic regression.A total of 123 patients with exstrophy-epispadias complex born in Germany between 1997 and 2011 were recruited through participating departments of pediatric urology and pediatric surgery throughout the country as well as the German self-help organizations Blasenekstrophie/Epispad…
Post laryngectomy speech rehabilitation outcome in elderly patients
2013
The aim of our work has been to evaluate the different options of tracheoesophageal voice rehabilitation in over 70-year-old patients, who had undergone laryngectomy, assessing advantages and drawbacks of this method of vocal recovery. A retrospective study has been carried out. This has included 40 subjects, all aged more than 70 years old, who have been referred to tracheoesophageal voice rehabilitation. It has been realized a phonatory fistula between trachea and esophagus with prosthesis positioning by means of a primary puncture in 18 cases and it has been realized a secondary puncture in 22 cases. The results gathered in these patients were compared with data obtained from a group mad…
