Objectives: Three recent studies revealed a haplotypic association of alcohol dependence with the gene encoding the {alpha}2 subunit of the {gamma}-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor (GABRA2). The present study examined whether variation of the GABRA2 gene confers susceptibility to different subtypes of alcohol dependence in the German population. Abstract Background This study examined the hypothesis that allelic variants of the ionotropic glutamatergic N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) are associated with vulnerability to alcoholism and some related traits. Methods We investigated the silent G2108A and C2664T polymorphisms of the NMDAR1 and the NMDAR2B genes, respectively. The suitability of a three-color fluorescence in situ suppression hybridization technique was examined for monitoring five different groups of individuals: 30 occupied in radiology, 26 occupied in nuclear medicine or radiation physics, 32 patients with breast cancer, 26 occupied with military waste disposal, all presumably exposed to low doses of radiation or chemical mutagens and a non-exposed control group (N=29). To evaluate the characteristics of hearing loss (HL) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).A comparative case-control study was performed with 194 patients and 107 healthy subjects. All of them were submitted to pure-tone audiometry and detection of inflammatory parameters and Western blot for anticochlear antibodies.HL was detected in 42.7 % of patients with RA (15.9 % in controls; P.001). This was sensorineural in 38.6 %. Three or more altered blood parameters appeared in 28.9 % of patients with RA (17.6 % in controls; P.01).
