Acoustic properties and perception of minimal contrasts in Valencian Catalan sibilants
2017
The Worlds of Fiction of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. George’s Marvellous Medicine, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games in Catalan
2014
The question I aim to study is what happens when relevant books for children and young adults in English reach the literary trail in Catalan: how they adapt, what they represent and what changes they create in the target culture. As we will see, I have selected four key stories that, in different ways, are already part of the history of children’s literature and when they come into contact with the Catalan literary trail, they represent very different communication models. The literary works selected are Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, and although there are many reasons to support this choice, the most relevant here are tha…

2018
The sirventes of the troubadour era has been broadly studied, but there are not overall explanations concerning the evolution of the sirventes genre in the Catalan-speaking lands of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This paper propounds a catalogue of sirventesos concerning its historical development, the troubadour models, rhetorical and grammatical treatises, and genre assignment in rubrics. Our catalogue contains thirty-one Catalan sirventesos , including twenty-eight extant items and three items lost. In some cases the literary motifs of the sirventes cross boundaries in a process of poetic hybridization with other moral genres which borrow out themes, images and rhetorical strate…
The Triumphs? Golden Age : a comparison between three European translations of Ilicino?s Commentary.
2020
During the last part of the fifteenth and the first decades of the sixteenth centuries, the dissemination of Petrarch’s Trionfi – the so-called ‘second wave’ of Petrarchism – was characterized by the extraordinary editorial success, in Italy as well as in the rest of Western Europe, of Bernardo Ilicino’s Commento on the Trionfi. By promoting an erudite, encyclopedic, and moralizing reading of Petrarch’s poem, Ilicino’s commentary effectively became a lens through which generations of European readers approached the text. Nonetheless, the dissemination of the commentary proved not to be immune from the influence of sixteenth-century lyrical Petrarchism, which started developing almost at the…
El lèxic cortès i cavalleresc en Curial e Güelfa: mots patrimonials i interferències culturals
2015
Curial and Guelfa, by an unknown author, is a chivalric romance written in a realistic style. Planned within the medieval tradition, although infl uenced by Italian Humanism, it was composed in fluent Catalan, but subject to several linguistic and cultural interferences. It was probably conceived and written in Italy in the decade of 1440. The author not only knows deeply the courteous volgare language, but also the literary one (especially Boccaccio), with which he enriches a Catalan language probably learnt in Valencia. He also innovates in the courtly and chivalric vocabulary of his mother tongue with the introduction of expressions, proverbs and words –both colloquial and learned– not o…
2018
This contribution is a further partial anticipation of the critical edition of the mythological faules of Joan Roís de Corella (15th century) for Barcino (ENC), after that appeared in Magnificat, vol.3, 2016. It focuses on one of the author's most mature and significant faules, as well as one of the most prestigious testimonies both of the presence of the myth of Ero and Leandro in the Iberian 15th century, and of the peninsular reception of the Heroides. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part, Introduction, the current situation of the studies related to the Istòria is first summarized. Next, the analysis of the literary memory that supports the discursive construction of the f…
La interculturalitat a la literatura infantil i juvenil catalana
2016
Jacint Verdaguer, Andrejs Pumpurs and Petar Petrović Njegos: Three Moments in the Romantic National Epic of 19th-Century Europe
2015
In the course of the 19th century, from one extreme to another, literary manifestations of nationalism have shown up in several different genres, and meaningfully in the epic genre, which is perceived, according to the Western literary canon, with its beginning in the Greek epics of the Iliad and the Odyssey , as a primary expression of the cosmogonic myths of an ethnic group in search of the national identity. This paper, through the analysis of the works of three major European poets, the Catalan Jacint Verdaguer, the Latvian Andrejs Pumpurs, and the Montenegrian Petar Petrovic Njegos, each one of them writing without knowing the other two, tries to state that despite the obvious social, …
In this paper we analyze, through several textbooks recently published in Valencia, what kind of literature is explained in post-comp…
