In-process tool-failure detection by means of AR models
1997
The present paper proposes a cutting tool breaking and chipping detection system for continuous and interrupted cutting, based on the analysis of the cutting force componentsFx andFy. A multifactorial experimental design has been carried out, to take account of the variability of the force signal. An adaptive signal processing algorithm is proposed, which detects catastrophic failure when at least one component deviates outside an estimated oscillation band for a time duration longer than a prefixed interval. The algorithm has been implemented on a four-microprocessor transputer board. Several tests confirmed the validity of the approach for detecting breaking and chipping phenomena in a fe…
Fire risk sub-module assessment under solvency II. Calculating the highest risk exposure
2021
The European Directive 2009/138 of Solvency II requires adopting a new approach based on risk, applying a standard formula as a market proxy in which the risk profile of insurers is fundamental. This study focuses on the fire risk sub-module, framed within the man-made catastrophe risk module, for which the regulations require the calculation of the highest concentration of risks that make up the portfolio of an insurance company within a radius of 200 m. However, the regulations do not indicate a specific methodology. This study proposes a procedure consisting of calculating the cluster with the highest risk and identifying this on a map. The results can be applied immediately by any insur…
Decoherence in a fermion environment: Non-Markovianity and Orthogonality Catastrophe
2013
We analyze the non-Markovian character of the dynamics of an open two-level atom interacting with a gas of ultra-cold fermions. In particular, we discuss the connection between the phenomena of orthogonality catastrophe and Fermi edge singularity occurring in such a kind of environment and the memory-keeping effects which are displayed in the time evolution of the open system.
Catastrofi e dinamiche di inurbamento contemporaneo. Città nuove e contesto
2012
Sensory and sympathetic correlates of heat pain sensitization and habituation in men and women
2012
Background Habituation and sensitization are important behavioural responses to repeated exposure to painful stimuli, but little is known about the factors determining sensory, affective and sympathetic habituation to repeated pain stimulation in men and women. Methods Thirty volunteers (15 women) underwent a standardized heat pain paradigm spread over 8 consecutive days. At the beginning of the experiment, personality dimensions, coping strategies and pain catastrophizing thoughts were determined. Receiving a series of 10 blocks of six painful heat stimuli a day, participants rated pain intensity and unpleasantness. Skin conductance was recorded throughout the sessions. Results and Conclus…

Pathogenic lipid‐binding antiphospholipid antibodies are associated with severity of COVID‐19
2021
Abstract Background Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID‐19)–associated coagulopathy is a hallmark of disease severity and poor prognosis. The key manifestations of this prothrombotic syndrome—microvascular thrombosis, stroke, and venous and pulmonary clots—are also observed in severe and catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome. Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are detectable in COVID‐19 patients, but their association with the clinical course of COVID‐19 remains unproven. Objectives To analyze the presence and relevance of lipid‐binding aPL in hospitalized COVID‐19 patients. Methods Two cohorts of 53 and 121 patients from a single center hospitalized for PCR‐proven severe acute respiratory syndro…
