The authors describe a case of spinal arteriovenous fistula (AVF) treated by a microvauscular Doppler–assisted surgical interruption of the arterialized vein. Microvascular Doppler monitoring represents a valid, widely available, non-invasive tool that enables identification, through flow spectrum analysis, of components of this type of vascular malformation. In this case because the location of the fistula was identified prior to opening the dura only minimally invasive surgery was required. Abstract Purpose To evaluate surface cleanliness of root canal walls along post space after endodontic treatment using 2 different irrigant regimens, obturation techniques, and post space preparation for adhesive bonding. Study design Forty teeth, divided into 4 groups, were instrumented, using Ni-Ti rotary files, irrigated with NaOCl or NaOCl + EDTA and obturated with cold lateral condensation (CLC) or warm vertical condensation (WVC) of gutta-percha. A Novel Technique for Deembeding the Unloaded Resonance Frequency from Measurements of Microwave Cavities

[EN] A novel technique to extract the influence of coupling networks on the resonant frequency of cavities in one-port measurements is presented. The determination of the unloaded resonant frequency is performed directly from measurements without either the need to obtain the electromagnetic fields in the resonator or to deembed the delay of transmission lines from the measuring equipment to the resonator. The importance of the Foster's form on the modeling of the frequency detuning of the resonators is also discussed and a criterion for the choice of the appropriate Foster's form is suggested. Equivalent circuits traditionally used to model resonators and coupling networks in the vicinity of a resonance provide values of unloaded resonant frequencies which usually do not agree with experimental results. Spontaneous emission of an atom near an oscillating mirror

We investigate the spontaneous emission of one atom placed near an oscillating reflecting plate. We consider the atom modeled as a two-level system, interacting with the quantum electromagnetic field in the vacuum state, in the presence of the oscillating mirror. We suppose that the plate oscillates adiabatically, so that the time-dependence of the interaction Hamiltonian is entirely enclosed in the time-dependent mode functions, satisfying the boundary conditions at the plate surface, at any given time. Quasi-Normal Frequencies in Open Cavities: An Application to Photonic Crystals

The electromagnetic field in an optical open cavity is analyzed in the framework of the Quasi-Normal Modes theory. The role of the complex quasi-normal frequencies in the transmission coefficient and their link with the density of quasi-modes function is clarified. An application to a quarter-wave symmetric one-dimensional photonic crystals is discussed to illustrate the usefulness and the meaning of our results.
Field fluctuations near a conducting plate and Casimir-Polder forces in the presence of boundary conditions

We consider vacuum fluctuations of the quantum electromagnetic field in the presence of an infinite and perfectly conducting plate. We evaluate how the change of vacuum fluctuations due to the plate modifies the Casimir-Polder potential between two atoms placed near the plate. We use two different methods to evaluate the Casimir-Polder potential in the presence of the plate. They also give new insights on the role of boundary conditions in the Casimir-Polder interatomic potential, as well as indications for possible generalizations to more complicated boundary conditions.
Acoustic manipulation of electron-hole pairs in GaAs at room temperature

We demonstrate the optically detected long-range (>100 μm) ambipolar transport of photogenerated electrons and holes at room temperature by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in (In,Ga)As-based quantum well structures coupled to an optical microcavity. We also show the control of the propagation direction of the carriers by a switch composed of orthogonal SAW beams, which can be used as a basic control gate for information processing based on ambipolar transport.
