Short-term Follow-up after Implantation of a Foldable Iris-Fixated Intraocular Lens in Phakic Eyes

Objective To evaluate efficiency, predictability, stability, complications, and patient satisfaction after implantation of a foldable iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) for the correction of myopia. Design Prospective, nonrandomized, comparative (self-controlled) trial. Participants Forty-one eyes of 22 myopic patients aged 18 to 56 years (mean, 36 years) with average sphere of −8.2±2.01 diopters (D; range, −12.25 to −3.75 D) and average preoperative cylinder of −0.90±0.62 D (range, −2.50 to 0.00 D) were enrolled in this prospective study. Objective To analyze the changes in corneal biomechanical parameters of keratoconic eyes with and without intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implants after 1 year of corneoscleral contact lens (CScL) wear. Methods Seventy-four eyes of 74 patients were divided into three groups: healthy subjects (29 eyes, control group), and 2 groups of subjects with keratoconic eyes (one group of 20 eyes with ICRS implants and one of 25 eyes without them), which were fitted with CScL. Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a disease related to a complement disorder, namely a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor. Complement-split products are implicated in the regulation of the immune response, and we have compared some immunologic parameters between HAE and normal individuals. T-lymphocytes with receptors for IgG were increased in HAE, but no difference in T-cell suppressor activity for B-cells was detected. Furthermore, increased IgG receptor expression was not accompanied by any significant changes in the ratios of OKT4- and OKT8-defined antigens. We examined safety and efficacy of STI-571 in 24 bcr/abl-positive patients with CML post PBSCT. At start of STI-571 therapy, nine patients presented in blast crisis (BC) or in accelerated phase (AP), and 15 in chronic phase (CP). Patients were evaluated for hematologic, cytogenetic and molecular response, survival and toxicity. In general, STI-571 was well tolerated in this heavily pretreated group of patients with a non-hematologic and hematologic toxicity profile similar to that observed in a previous phase I trial at comparable doses. Efficacy and safety of imatinib in adult patients with c-kit–positive acute myeloid leukemia

Abstract This phase 2 pilot study was conducted to determine the efficacy and safety of imatinib mesylate in patients with c-kit–positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML) refractory to or not eligible for chemotherapy. Twenty-one patients were enrolled and received imatinib 600 mg orally once daily. Five responses were seen primarily in patients, starting with relatively low blast counts in bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB): 2 patients who were considered refractory on chemotherapy on the basis of persistence of blasts in PB and BM met the criteria for complete hematologic remission, 1 patient had no evidence of leukemia, and 2 patients achieved a minor response. Morphometric Study of the Bone Marrow in Polycythemia Vera Following Interferon-Alpha Therapy

Bone marrow cellularity and extent of fibrotic change were determined in nineteen patients with polycythemia vera, treated with interferon-alpha (IFN) for 1 year. The cellularity was evaluated with an interactive semiautomatic method using Leitz TAS plus microscope: in particular, number and size of megakaryocytes were evaluated after immunostaining with Y2/51 (CD 61); reticulin content was studied by light microscope with a semiquantitative method. Before IFN therapy mean cellularity was 80.5% (+/- 13.7). After 6 and 12 months mean cellularity was 75.4% and 68.4% respectively. Six months after cessation of IFN therapy the cellularity was 69.1%. Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is considered one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, comprising dermatomyositis, polymyositis, and inclusion body myositis. The heterogeneous group of necrotizing myopathies shows a varying amount of necrotic muscle fibers, myophagocytosis, and a sparse inflammatory infiltrate. The underlying immune response in necrotizing myopathy has not yet been addressed in detail.
