Biocomposite PBAT/lignin blown films with enhanced photo-stability.

2022

Lignin can be obtained as a byproduct during cellulose-rich pulp fibers production and it is habitually treated as waste or intended for low-value destinations. However, due to UV absorption and mechanical properties, lignin can contribute to the fabrication of biodegradable blown films with superior performances. In this study, it was established the suitability of lignin for manufacturing biocomposite PBAT blown films with higher stiffness and photo-oxidation resistance. The effect of the filler concentration on the melt rheological behavior in non-isothermal elongational flow was investigated. The results allowed us to choose the correct filler concentration for producing films through a…

ZnO/polyaniline composite based photoluminescence sensor for the determination of acetic acid vapor

2020

In this study, we report a novel ZnO/polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite optical gas sensor for the determination of acetic acid at room temperatures. ZnO nanorods, synthesized in powder form were coated by PANI (ZnO/ PANI) by chemical polymerization method. The obtained nanocomposites were deposited on glass substrate and dried overnight at room temperature. Structure and optical properties of ZnO/PANI nanocomposite have been studied by using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Tests towards acetic acids were performed in the range of concentrations 1–13 ppm. The adsorption of acetic a…

Xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolases (XTHs) during tomato fruit growth and ripening

2009

Abstract: Depolymerization of cell watt xyloglucan has been proposed to be involved in tomato fruit softening, along with the xyloglucan modifying enzymes. Xyloglucan endo-transgtucosylase/hydrolases (XTHs: EC 2.4.1.207 and/or EC 3.2.1.151) have been proposed to have a dual role integrating newly secreted xyloglucan chains into an existing watt-bound xyloglucan, or restructuring the existing cell watt material by catalyzing transglucosylation between previously wall-bound xyloglucan molecules. Here, 10 tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) SIXTHs were studied and grouped into three phylogenetic groups to determine which members of each family were expressed during fruit growth and fruit ripening, a…

Agronomic treatments to avoid seed presence in ‘Nadorcott’ mandarin I. Effect on in vivo pollen tube growth

2022

Abstract Fresh market demands high quality fruit and, therefore, citrus growers and researchers are constantly looking for solutions to avoid seed presence. Current horticultural techniques have low effectiveness or high cost. The objective of this study is to evaluate the inhibition effect of seven products on the in vivo pollen tube growth in Nadorcott mandarin, which is a high-value seedy variety. To achieve this main objective, three inorganic fertilizers (ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, sulfur), and four saccharides (saccharose, methyl cellulose, callose, chitosan) were applied to Nadorcott stigmas 24 h before and after hand pollination. Pollen tubes were counted 1, 3, and 5 days …

Presence of phosphorylatedO-ribosyl-adenosine In T-ψ-stem of yeast methlonine initiator tRNA

1989

We report in this paper on isolation and characterization of two unknown nucleosides G* and [A*] located in the T-psi-stem of yeast methionine initiator tRNA, using the combined means of HPLC protocols, real time UV-absorption spectrum, and post-run mass spectrometry by electron impact or fast atom bombardment. The G* nucleoside in position 65 was identified as unmodified guanosine. The structure of the unknown [A*] in position 64 was characterized as an isomeric form of O-ribosyl-adenosine by comparison of its chromatographic, UV-spectral and mass spectrometric properties with those of authentic O-alpha-ribofuranosyl-(1"----2')-adenosine isolated from biosynthetic poly(adenosine diphosphat…

Microbial production of biopolymers from the renewable resource wheat straw.

2014

Aims Production of poly-s-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and the chemical basic compound lactate from the agricultural crop ‘wheat straw’ as a renewable carbon resource. Methods and Results A thermal pressure hydrolysis procedure for the breakdown of wheat straw was applied. By this means, the wheat straw was converted into a partially solubilized hemicellulosic fraction, consisting of sugar monomers, and an insoluble cellulosic fraction, containing cellulose, lignin and a small portion of hemicellulose. The insoluble cellulosic fraction was further hydrolysed by commercial enzymes in monomers. The production of PHB from the sugar monomers originating from hemicellulose or cellulose was achieved by …

Highly water repellent aerogels based on cellulose stearoyl esters

2011

Herein we combine in a novel way the physical effect of porous structure of a cellulosic aerogel with the chemical effect of long alkyl tails by a well known homogeneous green esterification method, to achieve purely bio-based and highly water repellent cellulosic materials. As an alternative for a traditional fluoro derivatized hydrophobization, here long fatty acid tails are utilized to lower the surface energy. To minimize the process emission, ionic liquid (IL) 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride is used for the esterification, due to its non-volatility and recyclability. We have shown here that low degree of substitution (DS) of the fatty acid cellulose material enables the spontaneou…

Sumatriptan Succinate Transdermal Delivery Systems for The Treatment of Migraine

2007

We have successfully obtained sumatriptan transdermal systems with different polymer compositions: methyl cellulose (MC), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and a polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) mixture. The systems contained 1,2-propylenglycol (MC) or sorbitol as a plasticizer (PVP and PVP-PVA), methacrylate copolymer as an adhesive agent, and an occlusive liner. Azone (5%, w/w) was incorporated into all the systems as a percutaneous enhancer. Transdermal systems are thin, transparent and non-adhesive when in a dry state. The permeation of sumatriptan succinate across pig ear skin was studied using the systems prepared. The formulation with MC polymer produced a statistically …

Release and permeation profiles of spray-dried chitosan microparticles containing caffeic acid

2018

Made available in DSpace on 2018-12-11T17:17:17Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-03-01 Caffeic acid (CA), a phenolic compound found in plants with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, induces collagen production and prevents premature aging of the skin. The objective of this study was to develop two types of chitosan microparticles (MP) containing CA and to relate the morphology with the release and permeation profiles. One type of MP was prepared from a hydroalcoholic solution (MPI) and the other from an aqueous solution (MPII). Their morphology and size was evaluated by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. The release profile of CA was evaluated using the…

Measuring intrinsic thickness of rough membranes: application to nanofibrillated cellulose films

2015

Adequate measurement of thickness of sheet-like materials or membranes is most important for quantifying their properties such as density, barrier properties and mechanical strength. Depending on the surface roughness of the membrane, the thickness measured by standard micrometre devices (apparent thickness) may considerably overestimate the actual geometrical mean thickness (intrinsic thickness) required for such purposes. In this work, we present a method for correcting the measured apparent thickness value of thin membranes for their surface roughness, thereby obtaining an improved estimate of the intrinsic thickness. The surface roughness data required for the correction can be obtained…
