Identification of subdominant sourdough lactic acid bacteria and their evolution during laboratory-scale fermentations

2007

Abstract Presumptive lactic acid bacterial cocci were found in six sourdoughs (out of 20) from the Abruzzo region (central Italy) and subjected to phenotypic and genotypic characterization. A total of 21 isolates, recognized as seven strains by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)–polymerase chain reaction (PCR) typing, were identified by a polyphasic approach, consisting of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, multiplex PCR assays and physiological features, as Enterococcus faecium and Pediococcus pentosaceus. Four strains belonging to those species and previously isolated from wheat kernels were inoculated in sterile flour to verify their capacity to grow in sourdough environment. Doughs with s…

Evaluating fish assemblages associated with gas platforms: Evidence from a visual census technique and experimental fishing surveys

2010

Fish assemblages associated with extractive platforms were surveyed, for the first time, using traditional fishing surveys (bottom gill net) and an underwater visual census (UVC) technique in order to test the effectiveness and to identify strengths and weaknesses of both methods. The study was carried out during three seasons at two offshore gas platforms (Eleonora and Squalo C) located in the central Adriatic Sea. Both methods recorded a similar number of fish species although with only eight species in common, thus supplying complementary information and a good estimate of the total fish species richness (39) associated with these gas platforms. The use of innovative techniques, such as …

Downy-oak woods of Italy: phytogeographical remarks on a controversial taxonomic and ecologic issue

2014

The importance of downy oak as an integral component of the "submediterranean" woods has been underscored by many studies. Nevertheless, terms like "submediterranean" and "downy oak" are some of the most poorly understood concepts in European phytogeographic and taxonomic research. Downy oak is well known to be a problematic taxon. The name "Quercus pubescens" (= Q. humilis) combines populations characterized by increasing phenotypic and genomic polymorphisms along north-south gradients, which is explained as the result of a "founder effect" produced by a relatively fast post-glacial re-colonization of the northern areas through rare long-distance dispersal events. On the other hand, polymo…

Seed germination and reproductive features of Lysimachia minoricensis (Primulaceae), a wild-extinct plant.

2002

Lysimachia minoricensis is one of the few Mediterranean endemic plants (Minorca, Balearic islands) that has gone extinct in the wild but which persists as extant germplasm or cultivated plants in several botanical gardens. Reproductive features (seed set, number of seeds per capsule, seed weight) and germination responses to constant temperatures, sea water and dry-heat pre-treatments were investigated to determine the extent to which they may have influenced the extinction of the species. Seed set in Lysimachia is not dependent on pollinators, suggesting a functional selfer breeding system. Most plants produced a large mean number of fruits (23.2) and seeds (466), and the mean production o…

Association between self-reported care needs and the allocation of care in Norwegian home nursing care recipients

2010

saevareid h.i., thygesen e., lindstrom t.c. & nygaard h.a. (2012) Association between self-reported care needs and the allocation of care in Norwegian home nursing care recipients. International Journal of Older People Nursing7, 20–28 doi: 10.1111/j.1748-3743.2010.00247.x Objectives.  This study investigated the relationship between patients’ self-reported illness, daily afflictions, and the frequency of home nursing care, and whether patients’ coping resources influenced the allocation of care. Design, sample and measurements.  A cross-sectional survey was adopted. Two hundred and forty-two people aged 75 years and above receiving home nursing care participated in the study. Models of long-term care use among older people with disabilities in Taiwan: institutional care, community care, live-in migrant care and family care

2014

The four main models of long-term care (LTC) for older people in Taiwan are institutional care, community & home-based care, live-in migrant care, and family care. This study aims to examine the factors associated with the four above-mentioned LTC models, using the Andersen model as its framework for analysis. Data were from the 2005 National Taiwanese Health Interview Survey (n=30,680) and in this study 592 over-65-year-old persons who require personal care in daily life were included. The findings showed that the majority of older people with care needs lived with family and were cared only by their family. The second largest group were those older people who were cared by migrant care wo…

Galvenās Literatūras pārvaldes darbība Latvijā. 1985.-1990.gads

2013

Anotācija Promocijas darba “Galvenās Literatūras pārvaldes darbība Latvijā. 1985.- 1990. gads” autors ir Juris Millers. Darbā aplūkoti PSRS cenzūras institūcijas darbības aspekti Latvijas PSR tās pastāvēšanas pēdējā piecgadē – laikā no 1985. līdz 1990. gadam, kas sakrita arī par PSRS eksistences pēdējo piecgadi. Šis laika periods līdz šim ir salīdzinoši maz pētīts, tādēļ no zinātniskā viedokļa tas ir īpaši nozīmīgs, jo sakrīt ar virkni būtisku procesu, kas norisinājās mūsu sabiedrībā, piemēram, Atmodas notikumiem, valsts sistēmtransformāciju, Latvijas neatkarības iegūšanu. Promocijas darbā pētītais laiks sakrīt ar Galvenās Literatūras pārvaldes (GLP) likvidēšanu, tādēļ ir svarīgi izpētīt šī…

Potential and limitation of combining terrestrial and marine growth records from Iceland

2017

Abstract Seasonally formed, perennial growth increments of various organisms may possibly contain information about past environmental changes, well before instrumental measurements occurred. Such annually resolved proxy records have been mainly obtained from terrestrial archives, with a paucity of similar data originating from marine habitats. Iceland represents ideal conditions to develop both, tree ring (dendro) and bivalve shell (sclero) chronologies from adjacent sites. Here we introduce the first network of Icelandic birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) and rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) dendrochronologies, as well as ocean quahog (Arctica islandica L.) sclerochronologies. In order to identify th…
