2009
An international meeting on Bordetella pertussis assay standardization and harmonization was held at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA, 19-20 July 2007. The goal of the meeting was to harmonize the immunoassays used for pertussis diagnostics and vaccine evaluation, as agreed upon by academic and government researchers, regulatory authorities, vaccine manufacturers, and the World Health Organization (WHO). The primary objectives were (1) to provide epidemiologic, laboratory, and statistical background for support of global harmonization; (2) to overview the current status of global epidemiology, pathogenesis and immunology of pertussis; (3) to develop a consen…
Writing without shame: the issue of female sexuality in the Anglo-American translations of Passion simple, L’Événement and L’Occupation by Annie Erna…
2011
This article focuses on the rendering of the discourse on sexuality in Passion simple and L’Occupation and that on procreation in Happening in the Anglo-American translations of these three texts. Annie Ernaux conceives writing as a political activity, one of whose aim is to denounce male domination by means of the textual inscription of feminine sexuality and of female corporality. Indeed the author-narrator wishes to write “without shame” in order to break a code of silence imposed by society. The effort to objectify the discourse on the body which characterizes Ernaux’s writing is based on a style devoid of metaphors and marked by numerous repetitions. These textual stakes are simplified…
2019
The Patres ecclesiae?s works were a frequent topic of discussion at the time in which many humanists stood against the decadent medieval scholastics. That Juan Luis Vives was part of this tradition is demonstrated in his commentaries on Saint Augustine works. Despite its pedagogical function, the scholia of the Valencian author became quite subjective. In this sense, his ecdotic work or, specially, his «criticisms and censures» can be mentioned. Here, Vives strongly disapproves of the intense political and intellectual turmoil of his epoch. Thus, this article is aimed at describing those annotations in which Vives adopts such an Erasmist point of view to comment Augustine?s De Civitate Dei.…

2015
The study begins with an analysis of the reasons why the images of the American version of Murena are censored, with modest veils being thrown upon any instance of nudity while this version rather emphasizes the violence of the graphic novel in its translation and adaptation choices. That paradoxical attitude is discussed in the context of the ambiguities developed in the US culture as regards the representation of nudity being a reminder of the human species’ animal dimension in a society still fraught with puritanical assumptions. Although those ambiguous choices may be ascribed to the publisher’s wish to adapt Murena to the young readers regarded as their main target, they may also repre…

The Translation of Sex-Related Language: The Danger(s) of Self-Censorship(s)1
2009
While censorship is an external constraint on what we can publish or (re)write, self-censorship is an individual ethical struggle between self and context. In all historical circumstances, translators tend to produce rewritings which are ‘acceptable’ from both social and personal perspectives. The translation of swearwords and sex-related language is a case in point, which very often depends on historical and political circumstances, and is also an area of personal struggle, of ethical/moral dissent, of religious/ideological controversies. In this paper we analyse the translation of the lexeme fuck into Spanish and Catalan. We have chosen two novels by Helen Fielding—Bridget Jones’s Diary (…
