The centromere is a fundamental chromosome structure in which the macro-molecular kinetochore assembles and is bound by spindle microtubules, allowing the segregation of sister chromatids during mitosis. Any alterations in kinetochore assembly or functioning or kinetochore–microtubule attachments jeopardize chromosome stability, leading to aneuploidy, a common feature of cancer cells. En estas páginas comentamos brevemente la labor que se ha venido desarrollando en los últimos diez años (2000-2009) con respecto al léxico italiano y español en contraste / en contacto, tanto desde un punto de vista teórico como práctico. The depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer and the resulting increase in hazardous ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation reaching the Earth are of major concern not only for terrestrial but also for aquatic organisms. UV-B is able to penetrate clear water to ecologically significant depths. This chapter deals with the effects of UV radiation on DNA integrity in marine benthic organisms, in particular sea urchins in comparison to other marine invertebrates (sponges and corals). Alterations in the number and/or morphology of centrosomes are frequently observed in human tumours. However, it is still debated if a direct link between supernumerary centrosomes and tumorigenesis exists and if centrosome amplification could directly cause aneuploidy. Here, we report that hydroxyurea treatment induced centrosome amplification in both human fibroblasts expressing the HPV16 -E6-E7 oncoproteins, which act principally by targeting p53 and pRB, respectively, and in conditional pRB deficient mouse fibroblasts. Characterization of bep1 and bep4 antigens involved in cell interactions during Paracentrotus lividus development

Abstract We have identified and partially characterised two antigens, extracted with 3% butanol, from Paracentrotus lividus embryos dissociated at the blastula stage, and encoded by the cDNA clones previously described as bep1 and bep4 (bep-butanol extracted proteins). The cDNA fragments containing the specific central portions of bep1 and bep4 were expressed as MS2 polymerase fusion proteins in Escherichia coli. Chromatin insulators are eukaryotic genome elements that upon binding of specific proteins display barrier and/or enhancer-blocking activity. Although several insulators have been described throughout various metazoans, much less is known about proteins that mediate their functions. This article deals with the identification and functional characterization in Paracentrotus lividus of COMPASS-like (CMPl), a novel echinoderm insulator binding protein. Aurora-A is a centrosome-associated serine/threonine kinase that is overexpressed in multiple types of human tumors.
